Cambridge has some nice history to it, linking William back to his great-great grandmother, Queen Mary.

Really love this new title. And I think it makes sense (to me at least) for a man who is one day likely to become Prince of Wales to not have a Welsh title given today, but for the lesser titles to represent Scotland and Northern Ireland.

He is of course the great-great-great-great grandson of Adolphus - the 7th son of George III who was also created Duke of Cambridge.
Duke of Cambridge - Mary Adelaide - Queen Mary - George VI - Elizabeth II - Charles - William

According to 1917 Letters Patent, the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales is HRH Prince X of Y. So if their eldest son is named George, he'd be HRH Prince George of Cambridge.

Immediately upon Charles' accession, Prince William will become the Duke of Cornwall. Precedent indicates that he'll be known as HRH the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

He will always be HRH Prince William. You don't lose titles, you gain them. However like his father and uncles, he'll be known by his new title -- the Duke of Cambridge.

When Edward VII became King, his son became HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York. So when Charles becomes king, before he is invested as the Prince of Wales, William will be HRH The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

William wouldn't become Prince of Wales until Charles chooses to create him Prince of Wales. (He'll continue to be the Duke of Cambridge, however, until his own accession when the title will merge with the crown.)
