Thanks

I thought that since it's not the heir he/she could have a different title...

All of their children will be Prince/Princess name of Cambridge. In the normal order of things only the first boy would have been a prince, but the Queen declared that all of their children will be HRH.

It will be Prince ----- or Princess ------ of Cambridge, until Charles becomes King. William will then probably be briefly Duke of Cornwall and Kate Duchess (very briefly probably as William's stepmother is associated with the title and they'll want to avoid confusion) and then Charles will almost certainly make William Prince of Wales. William and Kate's children will then become Prince George of Wales and his siblings will be 'of Wales' too.

When Kate was pregnant with George, the Queen issued Letters Patent declaring that all of William's children would be styled as HRH Prince/Princess. Without it only the eldest son (George) would be styled this way during the Queen's reign. The other children would have been Lord/Lady Name Mountbatten-Windsor. When Charles became King, all of the kids would then be upgraded to HRH Prince/Princess.

The territorial designation of the children's titles will change as William's title change. Harry's title will change to when Charles becomes King. He will lose the of Wales and just become HRH The Prince Henry because he is the son of King now, not the Prince of Wales who will be his brother once named.

A note about William's future titles:

When Charles becomes King, William will become Duke of Cornwall AND Cambridge - a double barrelled dukedom, just as George V was Duke of Cornwall and York for most of 1901 (including holding those titles in that form official when he opened the first Australian parliament in 1901).

Whether he is ever created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester (those titles go together) will be up to Charles and the Welsh Assembly which might come out and ask that there not be another Prince of Wales.

As a result the children's titles will go something like:

Prince George of Cambridge
Prince George of Cornwall and Cambridge
Prince George of Wales
The Prince George
HM The King

All siblings would follow the same title change with the exception of the last one.

Possible names for the 2nd child of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge

William will still be Duke of Cambridge and all the other titles that come will being heir apparent and then named Prince of Wales until he becomes King. The titles associated with the heir apparent become George's. The dukedom of Cambridge is merge into the Crown and can be then reissued. So if this baby is a boy, he could end up as Duke of Cambridge if his father gives him the title when King.

George won't ever be just HRH The Prince George. He will have Dukedoms that go with being the eldest son of the King if William becomes King. He would still be the Duke of Cambridge if William died before becoming King.

He may not ever be 'just' The Prince George but he will still be 'The Prince George' just as Charles is 'HRH The Prince Charles' along with all his other titles and in Scotland he is referred to specifically as 'HRH The Prince Charles, The Duke of Rothesay' whereas in the UK he is HRH The Prince of Wales or HRH The Duke of Cornwall or in Chester HRH The Earl of Chester.

I'd hate to be in charge of monogramming his hankies.

No. If William is created the PoW, he still retains his dukedoms and titles.

Won't be John. Bad luck

No

George would only become Duke of Cambridge if his father dies before becoming King. In that case he would be Duke of Cambridge and could be created Prince of Wales but could never be Duke of Cornwall (which is what happened to George III - he inherited the Edinburgh title on the death of his father but not Cornwall. His grandfather then created him Prince of Wales but he was still Duke of Edinburgh in his own right).

As a Prince George won't use any of his father's subsidiary titles - just as William didn't use any of Charles' other titles before being created Duke of Cambridge or Charles use Merioneth in the years he was 2nd in line to the throne behind his mother.

George will automatically become Duke of Cornwall when his father becomes King. The only other way he gains any titles is for his great-grandmother or grandfather to give him another title - presumably on his wedding day.

Agree. Name John considered with malediction on BRF. Unless W&K are so modern, that they do not pay attention to family's history.

Oh, please, it's 2014 - the idea that a name comes with a a curse is ridiculous. The British public certainly does not associate the name with anything troubling. If they want to name a child "John," they should go right ahead.

All families have their superstitions and it is not our business or right to ridicule them. The Royal family long ago formed the opinion that the name John had been ill fated in the family. Probably due to the early deaths of two young princes - Prince John of Wales (the third son of Edward and Alexandra) and Prince John (the lost Prince) youngest son of George V and Queen Mary.

I recall reading that Diana had wanted to name one of the boys John after her own father but was disuaded from the idea.
