Very nice that they lit up the Empire State Building in honour of the visit!

And it looks a bit like the Duchess has put on a little more weight. It could just be the coat through.

I can't believe how excited I am that they are finally here. I'm going to gorge myself on news and pictures for the next couple of days. CNN should have major coverage. They love stuff like this. The morning shows should show a lot also.

It's especially brilliant in December, despite the bitter cold. I think she'll regret only being there for two days, and with all those events packed in.
She really hasn't "seen" New York yet. They landed in the dark and were whisked away VERY quickly into Manhattan, stepped out in front of the hotel, hurried inside and that was that. Tonight they will travel a couple of blocks to a beautiful apartment to meet some very rich people. I think she was just happy seeing all the people who were waiting outside the hotel. New Yorkers can be overwhelming in their excitement. They are loud and boisterous and just so special. I love New York and New Yorkers. Kate probably felt the love.

It does not take long to get the vibe of a city.

I'm sure Kate will enjoy NY. Although I must admit, and I mean no disrespect to the city or its inhabitants (who were very pleasant in my experience), NY didn't really blow me away. Maybe just because you see it on TV or in films so much it was just kind of what I expected it to be. It was a great experience, don't get me wrong, but nothing about it really surprised me.

We visited Boston for the first time on the same trip and it made much more of an impression, probably because we didn't really expect it to.

William attacks China over ivory trade: Prince risks diplomatic row on US trip* | Daily Mail Online
Quote:
Prince William will risk a diplomatic row with China today by denouncing the illegal wildlife trade.

The prince will tell a US conference on the sale of ivory, rhino horn and other endangered animal parts that ‘those who look the other way, or spend the illicit proceeds of these crimes, must be held to account’.

He will add: ‘Together they loot our planet, to feed mankind’s ignorant craving for pets, trinkets, cures and ornaments derived from the world’s vanishing and irreplaceable species.’

Every big city has its own atmosphere. In NYC there's always that surge of energy...Boston oozes history. Philadelphia is a mix of both!

There wasn't THAT much love shown by New Yorkers to William and Kate. There were a reported 15 to 20 people (besides the Press) standing behind the barricades in front of the Carlyle Hotel.

Interesting point, PetticoatLane,
`
My first visit to NYC, was very strange, because it felt familiar, and alien both at the same time.. familiar because we are bombarded from birth by images [on film & tv] of the city, and its frenetic pace, alien because it is in fact incredibly insular..[so unlike London]. There was no interest taken, [by the locals] in anything occurring outside the city, or the East Coast of America.

I love the exhilarating architecture, but the outrageous, and notorious rudeness of its inhabitants [they make Parisians seem models of politeness] make it very offputting to strangers.

It is a bubble, and will be especially so for the Duke & Duchess !

Prince William, Duchess Kate tour New York, Washington as royal fever strikes America - News - TODAY.com
Quote:
Americans are giving the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a warm reception for their first visit to the Big Apple, where the royal couple gave frenzied fans exactly what they wanted: A peek at the growing baby bump.

The couple, traveling without toddler George, arrived late Sunday afternoon on a commercial flight where passengers were amazed to find them “mingling with everyone else.” The Empire State Building, where William will pay a visit later, was lit up in Union Jack colors in honor of their visit.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge receive an ecstatic welcome from hundreds of New Yorkers as they arrive for a whistle-stop tour.

William And Kate Greeted With Cheers In New York
Quote:
Hundreds of well-wishers gathered on the streets of New York to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they arrived for the start of their whistle-stop tour of the US.

The royal couple flew first class on their scheduled British Airways flight to the Big Apple but their flight was delayed by around 40 minutes.

They were then whisked away into a large 4x4 that was part of a motorcade travelling under police escort from John F Kennedy International Airport to Manhattan.

I'd just like to make one comment here about the this article. Of course, the Empire State Building was lit up in red, white and blue and it most probably as in welcome to Will & Kate but it is hardly something new. Those are the same colors as our stars and stripes and IIRC, it was also lit up that way for the 9/11 anniversary.

I would think that the Cambridges' found it a pretty warm welcome though. From some pictures that I saw, there were a lot of people waiting to greet them at the airport waving the Union Jack.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: Visit to the USA; December 7-9, 2014

They do all kinds of light up colors on the Empire State Building through out the year such as green for St Paddys day and it was pink in October for breast cancer awareness month

The Empire State Bldg tweeted about the light scheme being a welcome for W&K so it was on purpose.
