It really would not surprise me that, if the child is a boy, his name being Prince Richard. The Prince of Wales is an ardent historian and the current news around Richard III might promote the name.

I think another Richard is long overdue. I don't count the Duke of Gloucester as his name has rarely been used in public since he succeeded his father.

I note that some people worry about the nickname "Dick", but this is very much out of fashion in the UK. Young Richards are usually Rick(y) or Rich(y), if the name is abbreviated at all, which often it is not.

And a nickname for William is Willie, but that doesn't seem to bother anyone. It is very much in current use, too, I know several Williams who are known as Willie.

Alexandra and/or Alexandrina are both pretty names, and I felt in love with Cecilia or Cecelia, though I'm sure they won't use it for their first baby.

Marianne and/or Marian is very pretty too!

Sophia and Isolde are other beautiful names as well, but I find them unlikely for the Heir.

Genevieve and Vivienne (or Vivian) have a nice ring to it plus the Medieval sound and history^^

Then we have another beautiful but traditional names such as Arabella (which I love dearly), Alice, Adelaide, Caroline, Charlotte, Christine(a), Helen(a) and Natalia.

I would imagine if its a girl, it will be Mary or Victoria. For a boy lets go with George or James. At least that is what I am feeling today.

Will they lets us know if its a girl or boy before the birth ? I'm sure they will know, but is it being made public ?

It seems like a bunch of us like Cecelia.
Kathia Sophia, I too like the unusual name Genevieve. You say it is medieval? I happen to know a teenager named Genevieve, so it's not absolutely unknown! My first of many aunts was Genevieve, as the Irish used it a lot, but she died in infancy and I never knew her.

James is the name of William's cousin (who's close in age to the baby) and Catherine's brother. I don't think it's likely that it'll be used as a first name.

There is a tradition in the BRF that the gender isn't revealed prior to the birth. Catherine has also said that they don't know the gender. I believe it's typical for parents to find out around 18 weeks, so if they're going to find out they probably already know. There have been a few arguments made saying that they don't know, and I kind of agree with that.

Even if they don't know, the tech who did the scan might know. Imagine walking around with that bit of information.....

Wow,I don´t think that the medical specialists who treat her are having an easy job-imagine all the pressure they are under because they have to treat such an important person who carries the future of Great Britain!Oh,it must be really hard to keep such a knowledge for yourselve,I would be dying to tell it to my best friends as we always share everything and it would make me miserable to know it but being not allowed to tell :D

I would say that the technician(s) definitely know(s).

The thing with hospital staff in general is that they have to respect patient confidentiality regardless of the prestige of the patient. I would hope that the Cambridges have a doctor who they know they can trust - possibly even one who has dealt with high profile pregnancies before.

Hermione, I'm glad you have such a nice name, Genevieve.

Genevieve, Vivian and Isolde? I am not sure being names from the legends of King Arthur would make them royal enough IMO. Arabella, Natalia, Christina may be old and traditional, but no real history for the British royal family. Marianne, Robyn Hood, another pretty remote literary royal link.

For the heir at least, I don't see a non-royal name, even if historical IMO.

I think Isolde, Genevieve and Vivienne (spelt this way) are perfectly lovely names and certainly Isolde and Genevieve could be used and accepted for a potential future Queen. The name doesn't have to have any history with the BRF it can mean something to Catherine and William.

When you are speaking about the heir to the throne, a name should have a royal history. If Bea had a daughter she named Isolde, no one would blink, but the future queen of England being named for an Irish literary character? I just don't see it happening. There are a great deal of royal and family names to be chosen from.

You mean like the future Queen of Sweden Estelle? Sorry but no, a name is a name and the person makes it what it is. It's nice to go traditional and historical, but only if you like the name itself. Like the Danish tradition of Christian and Frederik, needs to be scrapped ASAP because that's boring.

Estelle is a family name. Not overly royal, but still a family name. A name of a family member that Victoria was known to have respected greatly. If there is an Isolde, Vivienne or Genevieve I am not aware of in either family, I stand corrected of course.

I hope Fredrik and Christian doesn't end. Monarchies are all about traditions, why they still exist. When it comes to the next monarch, a traditional name seem better than something less 'boring' IMO.

Do you really think tradition has to be scrapped just because you think it's boring?

Not overly royal? Nowhere near it. Is there any room for 'new traditions' in royalty anymore? I'm not 100% monarchies do still exist because of the so called traditions they still have. Above all it has to be a name they like and makes sense. Some suggestions on here have been utterly ludicrous.

Obviously the Frederik/ Christian thing isn't going to be scrapped because some woman from Yorkshire think's it's boring. If I had that power names are not the first thing I'd change.

Estelle is the name of a member of the Swedish royal family, by marriage. So yes there is a royal connection there. And a family connection. How something like Isolde is not as ludicrous as Melissa or some other names out there, I fail to see.

It's not just about a name that they like. And makes sense? To whom? The queen has some veto power. Why we have a Prince William and not a Prince John. Why there was a Princess Margaret and not a Princes Rose. They will choose a name they like, but the chances that name will not come from one or the other's family, is pretty slim to none.

The veto power thing is hilarious! I have no clue why we have a Prince William and Princess Margaret? Do you?
Isolde is a beautiful name and rings well with Queen Isolde. Melissa is an awful name IMO.

I thought that Princess Mrgaret's name was an anglicised version of Marguerite. 3rd name of the QM. I know that she was going to be called Ann Margaret but it was vetoed by the King (thank goodness!) but he approved an alternative which was Margaret Rose.

I should think the Queen does have quite a strong influence. I'd be surprised if they went ahead with a name if she didn't give it her approval. Do you think she would be happy with Alexandra? :hmm:

The story for William goes that Diana wanted to name him John, for her father, but it was vetoed because of the history of the name in the British and Scottish monarchies.

Melissa is a lovely and popular name for many. Isolde is the name of an Irish princess who ran off with her husband's nephew. Why do we have a Princess Margrat and a Prince William? Because they are traditional royal names, and for those close to the throne, traditional names are chosen. Margrat, as a name of both queens of England and Scotland, as well as other British royals. William as the name of four English kings, and numerous others. Just like Bea, Eugenie, James and Louise. Peter and Zara may be first born grandchildren, but they were already fifth and sixth from the throne on birth, and would have continued to fall with the birth of any cousins.

I'm imagining the DM headlines if the baby is called Caroline - I could see William going for that. A real gesture to all the snobs (inverted and otherwise) plus being a nice enough name.

I am not sure why Caroline would be considered a snobbish gesture. IMO it would honor both Charles and Carole, so it does stand a chance IMO.
