He was born on 22 July in Asker (Norway) as a son of Johan Ferner was the son of tailor
Ferner Jacobsen (1885–1964), who owned a department store in Oslo, and his wife, Ragnhild Olsen (1889–1966). He also owned a department store. Ferner was originally his father's
given name and was adopted as a family name by Johan Martin Ferner and some of his siblings.
Firstly, on 20 January 1953, Johan Ferner married artist Ingeborg 'Bitte' Hesselberg-Meyer (later Rostad; 1931–1997). They divorced 1956. He then remarried at Asker Church outside Oslo on 12 January 1961 to
Princess Astrid of Norway, the second daughter of King
Olav V of Norway and
Princess Märtha of Sweden
They had five children: Catherine (b.1962), Benedikte (b.1963), Alexander (b.1965), Elisabeth (b.1969) & Carl-Christian (b.1972)
and five grandchildren: Sebastian (b.1990) & Madeleine (b.1993) Johanssen [children of Catherine & her husband Arild Johanssen (b.1961)], Edward (b.1996) & Stella (b.1998) Ferner [children of Alexander & his Icelandic wife Magriet, nee Gudmansdottir (b.1966)] & Benjamin Beckman (b.1999) [son of Elisabeth & her former husband Tom Beckman (b.1963)].

Tengku Intan Zaharah binti Tengku Hitam Omar, former Raja Perimasuri Agong (Queen of Malaysia from 1965-1970) and Tengku Ampuan (Queen ) of Terengganu (1945-1979) died in Pantal Hospital in Kuala Lumpur on 24 January.
Tengku Intan was born in
Singapore on April 13, 1928. Her father, Tengku Setia Raja Terengganu Tengku Hitam Omar, was a member of the Singapore royal family, serving in the
Terengganu State Civil Service as the State Secretary of Terengganu; he was exiled since the death of the last Sultan of Singapore,
Alauddin Alam Shah, in 1897. Her mother was HH Raja Zainab binti Raja Alang.Tengku Intan married
Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Zainal Abidin III (then Tengku Paduka Raja of Terengganu 1907-1979) on April 3, 1944 as his second wife. She had no children with him.
