Saudi King Abdullah suffering from pneumonia

audi Arabia's King Abdullah is suffering from a lung infection and has been breathing with the aid of a tube, Saudi officials have said.

The monarch, who is said to be aged about 90, was admitted to hospital on Wednesday for medical checks.

King Abdullah, who came to the throne in 2005, has suffered frequent bouts of ill health in recent years.

His age and condition has led to increasing focus on the issue of the Saudi royal succession.

Crown Prince Salman is next in line to succeed the king, though questions remain over who will follow.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah is suffering from pneumonia and temporarily needed help to breath through a tube, it has emerged.

The 90-year-old had been transferred to a military hospital in the capital Riyadh earlier this week after experiencing shortness of breath and back pain.

At one point he needed help to breath through a tube - but the procedure was successful and his condition is stable.
