Fathers, Sons and Questions

By Jim Hoagland

Texas and Saudi Arabia have much in common. Oil. Vast tracts of scrubland. And political dynasties. No wonder King Abdullah is the only foreign leader to have two bilateral meetings with George Bush at the president's sun-baked Crawford ranch.

King Fahd's reign of glitter and gold

HAROON SIDDIQUI

First of two parts

The king is dead. Long live the king. Seamless transitions have long been a Saudi specialty. Yet some pundits are predicting uncertainty and upheaval, which they promise are just around the corner from the grave of the dearly departed.

Wealthy Saudi prince visits Joina Centre

Property Reporter
8/12/2005 8:38:22 AM (GMT +2)

ONE of the world's richest people, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud, quietly sneaked into the country on Wednesday and toured the Joina Centre, whose construction started in 1998 and has taken long to complete due to escalating costs of building materials.
The visit by the Saudi Arabian billionaire, whose riches were estimated at US$20 billion as at May 1 2002, has brightened prospects for the completion of the state-of-the-art centre - a brainchild of TA Holdings Limited chairman Shingai Mutasa.

The legacy of King Fahd

COMMENTARY

By H.E. MOHAMMED AMEEN WALI

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the roles played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the local, regional and international fronts, its major concern since its establishment being the prosperity and security of nations worldwide.

The late Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (May Almighty God grant him mercy) has left behind a modern state that can compete with modern countries enjoying huge economies and facilities.

New Saudi King May Be Progressive

The Intelligencer

Saudi Arabia is a kingdom of paradoxes, one of its biggest being the fact that despite broad geopolitical engagement with the West, Saudi Arabia often brutally enforces backward looking domestic policies. One hardly should expect rapid, radical change from its new king, Abdullah. Yet King Abdullah last week took a welcome, if small, step toward domestic reform by granting pardons to three imprisoned dissidents and their attorney.

When The Prince Comes To Town

8/15/2005 5:19:24 PM (GMT +2)

Talk about causing a stare! Saudi Arabia Prince, Alwaleed Abdulaziz Alsaud was in town for the whole of last week, and his movement in and out of Gaborone Sun Hotel caused a stare. The visit seemed like a mini vacation. He only visited tourist sites.

The Prince flew in over a week ago with an entourage of at least 50. He looked like a man who does not want to be inconvenienced and he has staff that caters for his every need.

The Binding of King Abdullah
The new king of Saudi Arabia will need help if he wants to reform his country.

THE LONG-AWAITED DEATH of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia brought most of his subjects more hope than grief--hope that the new king, Abdullah, might move toward freedom of speech and other democratic reforms. It is hard to imagine that this sentiment is shared by the large and profligate ruling family. One powerful wing of the ruling family, the six remaining Sudairi brothers, had dreaded Abdullah's ascent to the throne and had delayed it for more than a decade.
