Grieving Kuwaitis started to gather outside the late emir's Dasman Palace in Kuwait City on Sunday morning, the AFP news agency reports.

....

Sheikh Jaber will be succeeded by Crown Prince Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, a distant cousin chosen as the heir apparent in 1978

Emir of Kuwait, 79, Dies

CAIRO, Jan. 15 - The emir of Kuwait, Sheik Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, a low-key ruler who helped guide his people through the long days when Iraq's military occupied, looted and ransacked their small, oil-rich nation, died this morning after a long illness. He was thought to be 79.

Sheik Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

In a region where heads of state tend to live extravagantly, residing in multiple palaces and traveling with entourages, Sheik Jaber stood out for his modest style. He declined to put his own image on the nation's currency, lived in what Kuwaitis considered a relatively simple home and was buried today in an unmarked grave.

My condolences, may God rest his soul and help his family through this difficult time.
