They are not members of the Royal Family and it is not clear their children are even in the line of Succession wanted by the King.

Crown princess Margarita and prince Nicolae hosted the visit of prince Guillaume of Luxembourg. The prince planted a tree to the garden of the Elisabeta Palace.

King Michael, Crown Princess Margareta and Prince Radu recently presided over a ceremony where royal decorations were awarded to different cultural figures of Romania at Peles Castle:

One ~ Two

Source: Remise de décorations au château de Peles

King Michael didn't attend at the ceremony. The decorations were delivered in connection of his 93rd birthday by crown princess Margarita. Prince Radu attended too. I have posted photos to Margarita's and Radu's thread.

Out of curiosity:

1. Who pays for these ceremonies, gifts and decorations: King Michael himself or the Romanian government (directly or indirectly)?

2. Do these gifts and decorations have any official government approval? Or are they just gifts from the Royal Family as individuals?

It would be a real honor to be decorated by someone like King Michael. If it's just the Royal Family giving out its own awards, without any government-given legitimacy, it just seems a bit odd, kind of like if President George H.W. Bush or Bill Clinton kept giving out medals after leaving office.

Everything is paid by the Royal House. even members of the Government received decorations but it is a rather ambiguos situation.

The Parliament won't give any special law regardind such issues but the Royal Family is invited officially to all the important public events and nobody reallygdoubts the role of HM the King as a symbol for the people.

HM the King was invited to speak in front of the Parliament three years ago and that was a clear recognition of the role of the Sovereign.

King Michael needs to get some "official" legitimacy to all of this- even just a resolution of the legislature giving the Royal Family encouragement to be giving out these awards, and recognizing the Royal Family's role in Romania.

At least in the US, it's routine for state legislatures and maybe Congress to pass nonbinding resolutions recognizing people and events as special, and perhaps Romania could follow Montenegro's official recognition of its Royal Family. Surely that's maybe feasible, and much more likely than a full restoration.

Otherwise, while I deeply admire all that the Royal Family does, it seems like just self-promotion, and "playing king".

I guess romanian officials don´t have any problems with it as the very warm and friendly visit of the President at the Palace a few days ago showed.

Not even a non-binding resolution recognizing and honoring King Michael for his work for Romania? Even the US Congress frequently honors people, from Nelson Mandela to Pope Francis.

Nice event indeed. All the televisions spoke about it.

There´s hardly any difference anymore between reigning royal houses of europe and the romanian royal family:flowers:. The King gives out orders to foreign (former) states men (Lech Walesa), the diplomatic corps in Bucarest is invited to a grand reception at the palace (a highly official function usually only performed by an institution part of the constitution!) and the royal family performs representative engagements on almost a daily basis! I only wished they´d appear in the general media like all the other reigning dynasties!

Let us hope that the next revision of the constitution will entrench the royal family and its role at the heart of the Romanian state and incorporate the Royal House's rules for the succession so that the positions of HRH Princess Margareta and HRH Prince Nicolae are safeguarded.

Yes. I fully agree!

The situation regarding the Romanian monarchy seems to me to be fascinating and historically important, and I will watch developments over the next few years with considerable interest :flowers:
