According to the official website of the Royal Family of Romania (at the page of Order of predecence), his name is now Nicholas-Michael Medforth-Mills. His sister is Elisabeta-Karina de Roumanie and the children of Irina Walker are Michael and Angelica de Roumanie Kreuger. And Sofia's daughter is Elisabeta Maria Biarneix...

His official surname is that one written in his passport.

... the same since his birth. Never changed - like all the rest. Whatever they CALL themselves, these titles do not exist in the real world.

The King is entitled to bestow titles and styles or honours on anyone in his family as it pleases him. So Nicolae´s former title was not fictional nor fake at all!

In the republican passport we see Moritz Prinz von Oettingen-Oettingen und von Oettingen-Wallerstein. In the royal passport (UK) we see Nicholas Michael Medforth-Mills. Not De Roumanie Medforth-Mills. Not Prince of Romania.

In that sense the royal titles used in Romania are not real. Another example, seen from the other perspective: Michael and his daughters are Prince (Princess) von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. After having had that title for 90 years, Michael decides to scrap it.

Nice. But cán he scrap it? Maybe for himself. Can he also scrap it for his five adult daughters living in different countries? And the title Princess of Romania. Most likely that is in Irina's passport (Swiss?). Michael has no any authority. Not in Romania, not in Switzerland, not in the UK. With other words: it is all Spielerei.

We appear to be having a similar conversation in two threads. Let's stick with discussing Nicholas de Roumanie Medforth-Mills here please.

Irina's passport is American (USA). Her legal last name is Walker.

Also, Nicholas was born Nicholas Michael de Roumanie Medforth-Mills.

His name never changed, but he and his sister gradually dropped the Medforth-Mills and starting using the "de Roumanie" middle name as a surname.

All of the grandchildren of King Michael, excepting the daughter of Princess Sophie, received "de Roumanie" as one of their middle names when they were born.

Does not matter really his surname. The main thing is that he is the King's grandson and he is still quite popular in Romania.

Mr Medforth Mills is a descendant of the King and is appreciated by many monarchists and his story could mean a lot for the younger generations: despite the divorce of his parents and the not easy relatonship with some members of his family, he succedeed to bring hope to many people. Maybe he won't ever be living in Romania but certainly he is not forgotten.

Surely many people, both in Romania and abroad, hope for the day when Nicholas does return to Romania and continues the work that he began during the years that he was there.

The book that was written on him, The Road Home, was very insightful into his development over the years and the love that he has for his family and Romanians.

I read the book in few hours and I was impressed of his love for the land of his maternal grandfather. Even if he did not have an easy life he seemed to me very much like the King. He believes he can support the people and he does not forget the history.

He respects history, but isn't a slave to it, and all in all, he is a modern man that the monarchy would do well to use. That's how it should be.

Let's not, as what the monarchy needs now, is stability and a good prospect for the future, hopefully with Nicholas in it.
Nobody benefits from gossip and chatter at this stage.

I suppose the publishing house will .

I am still hoping that will start working towards a reconsiliation as some point, when the dust has fallen. The drama seemed utterly unnecessary.

He should have given the possibility to speak with his grandfather before that controversial decision.

We don't know what's behind the decision, and in the paraphrased words of Empress Farah: we should look to the future. The past is history long time ago.
