EXCLUSIVE. Prince Nicolae of Romania: "I hope that the arrival of a child will bring us closer to the Royal Family"
In an exclusive interview for Adevărul, Prince Nicolae of Romania spoke about his first child he will have with his wife, Alina-Maria, about how her pregnancy went, about his desire to get closer to the Royal Family and about the chances of the monarchy returning to Romania.
Nicolae al Romaniei, the granson of King Mihai I, announced on June 1 that his wife, Alina-Maria, is pregnant and will give birth in November of this year. King Mihai's grandson married Alina Binder on September 30, 2018 at St. Elijah's Church in Sinaia. A graduate in 2012 of the Royal Holloway College at the University of London, specializing in management, Nicolae al Romaniei has since dedicated himself to the cause of Romania, being involved in numerous charitable actions. Born and raised abroad, he first arrived in Romania in 1992, when he was seven years old, on the occasion of his grandfather's first visit after the beginning of the exile in 1948. It is the first interview in which Nicolae al Romaniei talks about his future child. And on the occasion of the extensive conversation I had, I discovered a very kind interlocutor, always with a smile on his face and a lot of respect for the values transmitted by his illustrious predecessors.
How much has it changed that you will be a father?
- (Smiles) As I think everyone knows, I've been a father for a few years now, but of course now the context is different. I am sure that from November my life will change a lot and of course for the better. We are now preparing ourselves more mentally. We are very happy to hear this news and our future child.
Are you ready for the next sleepless nights?
- (Laughs) I understand that sleepless nights will come right after the baby is born. Sleepless nights will be a part of this special story, and whether we like it or not, that's it. We are here for the baby and we have to be careful, it doesn't matter if we sleep or not. Our efforts will be focused on raising the child to be healthy and happy, that is the most important thing.
How is your wife's pregnancy going so far and when is the birth expected?
- So far my wife has been very well, very relaxed and happy. It has been an easy task and we enjoy it. My wife has had no problems or other challenges at all. Regarding the date of birth, it will be in early November, in Bucharest, and we hope it will be a natural birth.
Have you already considered one or more first names for your child?
- We have several first names in mind, but we haven't chosen yet. We will wait until this miracle appears and then we will decide.
From what I understand, the baptism will be at Curtea de Argeş. Was it a choice with the soul, considering that your ancestors are buried there and that you have a special relationship with Archbishop Calinic?
- (Smiles) Indeed, I have a special relationship with Archbishop Calinic. I have not yet chosen a place for baptism, but Curtea de Argeş is one of the options. Among the options is Sinaia. I haven't made a decision yet. There is still time until baptism, so we have time to consider more places.
Will the baptism be in January, as it was circulated at one point?
- I still haven't chosen a day or a month. We need to look at the situation, because we have all been through this difficult period of the pandemic and we do not know what will happen next when winter comes. We'll see what the situation will be like when the cold comes.
How have you adapted, including with your wife's pregnancy, to this difficult period of the pandemic?
- It was a difficult time for everyone. We enjoyed the moments we spent together. I have stayed closer to my wife's family during this time. I think that in this period of the pandemic, many Romanians have analyzed more their lives and what is more important for each one. It's a great joy for us, no matter what gender the child is.
There are some rumors that you will have a baby girl.
- We don't announce yet if our child will be a girl or a boy. For us it is a great joy, no matter what gender the child will be.
But will the child be a girl?
- (Laughs) I'm not telling you yet.
Will members of the Royal Family also be invited to baptism?
- Of course. It also depends on what the restrictions will be because of the pandemic. I will invite my family and I hope that the arrival of a child will bring us closer. I would like to introduce my aunt and uncle to my child, I think the child could have a lot to learn from them.
Are you thinking of other children in the future?
- Yes, we want at least two children. We will take everything step by step, progressively (smiles). I don't know if you know, but life changes a lot when a baby comes into your life.
I know, I have a little girl, and because of her, my life and my wife's life has changed a lot and beautifully. With sleepless nights.
- Congratulations!
Thank you. In October 2019, when you were present with your wife at the funeral of Queen Elena from Curtea de Argeş, there were many who shouted: "King Nicolae". On September 30, 2018, when you arrived at the church in Sinaia for the religious wedding, many people shouted: "Long live the future king of Romania!". What message do you have for all these people?
- I am honored that people support us in this way. But what is important is to be united and keep alive the memories of kings and queens and to continue their moral values. I am very glad that the memory of King Mihai is still alive.
But can the special values left by your predecessors be continued under the current constitutional form in Romania?
- Values, I think so. But not like before. Not like in a kingdom, for example. We try to live with these special moral values, I will pass them on to my child. And I think each of us can do the same. We can each tell our children what each king and queen did for the country and how they behaved with the people.
Would a return to the monarchy in Romania be a utopia?
- It is very difficult to give you an answer at this time. But I believe that it is possible that during my life Romania will return to a monarchy. But I think we all need to want that, and we need to be united and work together on this goal.
