I find it fascinating how despite having only semi official status they seem to carry out a lot of official duties for Romania.

The King of Spain is in the Netherlands as well, he will have lunch with the King and Queen at Huis ten Bosch Palace. It would be nice when Princess Margareta and Prince Radu join the company.

What a pity we have no puctures of the visit to Huis ten Bosch Palace.
It is interesting that Margareta has Beatrix' habit to swap from morning dress to midday dress to evening dress. Also Radu did change from suit to uniform (visit to the Castle of Nassau in Breda) and back to suit.

It is. It seems to be like a "monarchy within a republic". Perhaps Romania cannot afford financially the real thing?!:whistling:

That's very old school. In the old days a lady of their class could go through 5-6 outfit changes in a day.

Her Majesty Margareta and Prince Radu last night attended an event at the Romanian Embassy in Paris, dedicated to Queen Marie of Romania and her passion for the Romanian popular garments.

Today 15 October Her Majesty and Prince Radu took part in the official inauguration of the "Queen Mary of Romania" Promenade, located on the banks of the Seine, near the Eiffel Tower.

They pay double: for the presidential court as well for the former royal family. I think this is the best of both worlds: the democratic deficit is resolved with a democratically elected head of state. At the same time the republican state sees a bonus in having an official role for the former royal family.

The former royal family does not pursue a restoration of the monarchy. The agreement with the state means that they have a role, and receive the means to do so, within the democratic and republican structure. That is the reason for the deep dislike by "fundamentalists" who see this as a surrender to the republic and hate Margareta & Radu. This versus realists who say one can wait for ages to see a democratic memberstate of NATO and EU going back to a hereditary monarchy. Their calculation: that will never happen.

I think King Michael and Princess Margareta were wise to be realists. Despite exile, despite Ceaucescu's horror, they have their former royal properties back, they have an official status, they receive an annual budget. Wow... Not many former royal families have achieved that in our time.

The Invictus Volunteers Association of Romania, under the High Patronage of Prince Radu, organized this year the sixth edition of the "Veterans' Cup" from 17 October to 25 October
On Thursday, 17 October, Prince Radu , started this year's competition, in the King Carol I Park, on the platform in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

If you look at some very important "democratically elected" government members (in a deeply corrupt system!), you would wonder how democratic this memberstate of NATO and EU really is...:whistling: If this scheming going on is more suitable for EU than a monarchy, backed by the majority of the people like we see it in western and northern europe, I doubt!

Well, no one ever asked the Spaniards, the Swedes, the Belgians, the Dutch, if they prefer to elect their own head of state or leave it to a specific family indeed. It is simply there, no one asked for it. In Romania it is not there. It is a republic. With corruptism, nepotism, whatever. But the same can be seen in the Kingdom of Spain, where the King's own brother-in-law is in jail... Or in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, where the grandfather of the King was open for bribery by American military aircraft manufacturers...

My point was that given the current situation, an European republican state, the majority wanting to end the republican state and go for Princess Margareta and her successors is most unlikely. A monarchist's wet dream. So the current arrangement of having a functional Royal House in a republican structure is the best they could get and remains amazing to see.

It is not entirely a new phenomenon: between 1581 and 1795 the highest position of state in the Netherlands (then formally a "republic") was hereditary for members of the family Orange-Nassau. It even saw a King of England, Scotland, Ireland (Willem III) actually holding the highest position (Stadtholder) in a republic...

Anyway, I am happy that it turned out so well for the Romanian royal family and I have good hopes that Nicholas will find peace and harmony again with his mother and aunts.

I think you are right when we discuss Greece, for instance, or south american states. But why would it be "monarchist's wet dream" a majority wanting to end the republican state and go for a monarchy again in this particular case?! If the RF, which is nonetheless still held in high regard by many people in Romania, had acted more wisely and dignified with its own family problems and not like a person with a "borderline personality disorder", their population could even be greater.
What I can easily imagine is that Brussels (of course behind closed doors. Nobody would know about. The official version would always state somethin´like "Oh, you can do whatever you want - that´s your own internal business...!") would influence any romanian government to prevent any attempt of the people to hold a referendum about republic or monarchy!

A bit off topic but the Swedes were asked. Not outright in a referendum but through their elected officials. After several proposals in Parliament and serious negotiations between the government and the other parties in Parliament it was decided during the Torekov compromise in 1971 to retain the monarchy and under which form to do so. This is why the Crown Princess has said a few times that she believes the Swedish monarchy to be a democratic form of government.
Given that 80% of the population supported the monarchy in its then current form and 12% supported an increase in the powers of the monarch it's very plausible that a referendum would have had to be called to be able to get a popular support for a change in government.

Roumania is not popolar in Brussels. Their 6 months Presidency was very bad.

Thanks for correcting, you are absolutely right , They fear the Romanian Presidency in January but at the end of the 6 months Jean Claude Juncker said ' I was not disappointed" Kind regards MO

Romanian Presidency of the EU - a success

Wrong! I don't know what your negative comment that Romania's Presidency of the EU was bad is based on, but I can assure you that this is not the case. It was seen as good, if not very good.

Some information and links here:

The overall result is good, qualified as “impressive” by Donald Tusk, “The greatest achievement of the Romanian presidency of the council was the fact that it managed to contribute to the closing of 100 legislative files in a very short time,” Paul Ivan, a senior policy analyst at the European Policy Centre told Emerging Europe. In quantitative terms, the legislative achievement outnumbers any EU presidency.

And the results are qualified as “remarkable” by Jean Claude Junker:
"European Commission President thanked the Romanian presidency, the Government and the Romanian ambassador in Brussels, saying that the results are ‘remarkable’. "

During....Romania’s six-month presidency of the Council of Europe, Bucharest managed to show that it is possible to fulfill adequate duties actively. This is evidenced by figures, depicting that Romania successfully passed as many as 90 legislative amendments and reforms within six months.

POLITICS Better than expected: Romania concludes first EU Council presidency

European Council president Donald Tusk called passing of 90 pieces of legislation throughout the Romanian presidency “impressive” and highlighted the work on border protection, reducing CO2 emissions and building a digital Europe. “I would like to thank President Iohannis and his entire team for an energetic and successful presidency. You managed to have ninety pieces of legislation agreed in the last one hundred days before the European elections, including on border protection, reducing CO2 emissions and building a digital Europe. That is impressive. You made good progress on the Multiannual financial framework (MFF) package. And of course you hosted last month's EU summit in beautiful Sibiu, a Europe Day that we will always remember,” he said.

It is wonderful to see this develop within the framework of a Republic. The republican structures remain but offer space for a formal, representative, role of the former royal family.

Press release from Mișcarea pentru Regat și Coroană (The Movement for the Kingdom and the Crown) about how its president Marilena Rotaru has been treated by Margareta.

At the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the princesses Margareta and Sofia in Romania, the Custodian of the Crown published on the website of the Royal Family the list of Romanians who were from the "first hour" close to King Mihai's Family.
Surprisingly, Mrs. Marilena Rotaru, present even the day after her arrival in Romania at the hearing with the two princesses, is not mentioned.

This is really not a surprise. With "friends" like Marilena Rotaru, the royal family needs not to look for enemies. It is essential to recognize poisonous adders and keep these far away. The "friendship" of Mr and Mrs Nicholas Medforth Mills with this lady is a major roadblock on the way to reconciliation with his mother Princess Elena and his aunts. As long as this lady's shade hangs over Nicholas, he can forget it.

The Royal Anthem, played at the Romanian Athenaeum on 18 January 2020, was the most beautiful gift offered to Her Majesty Margareta for her 30 years of work in Romania. A young generation of musicians sang the music of George Enescu, stirring to tears the public.
