Death and Funeral of King Michael, 5th & 16th December 2017

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Various media sources are saying that the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, King Simeon II of Bulgaria, the Grand Duke & Duchess (sic) of Baden, Princess Muna of Jordan and a representative of the Imperial Family of Japan will also be present.

As expected: the royals who knew King Michael were the most likely guests and indeed so far it seems the case.

Others now quoted as attending are King Philippe of the Belgians, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Prince Lorenz of Belgium, Archduke of Austria-Este, and Archduke Dominic of Austria-Hungary.

I think such senior royal representation was to be expected given that King Michael was (twice over) a reigning monarch earlier in his life. Whatever happened later, royal courts seem to grant the same precedence and respect to a former monarch regardless of whether they're still on the throne or not. It's nice to see so many senior figures will pay their last respects to His Majesty.

Indeed. We saw the same when Queen Wilhelmina, Grand-Duchess Charlotte and Queen Juliana were buried: despite being former monarchs, all of them got highest protocollary ceremonials with full honours.

Undoubtedly we will see the same for King Simeon, King Constantine, Grand-Duke Jean, King Albert and King Juan Carlos: all of them former Sovereigns.

It's extraordinary to think that in the year of His Majesty's birth, there were 15 monarchies in Europe: the 10 which still survive, plus Italy, Greece, Romania, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. In addition, Sultan Mehmet VI was still Ottoman Emperor.

Still alive were Emperor Karl I & IV of Austria-Hungary, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, Frederick Augustus III of Saxony and King Manuel II of Portugal.

1921 saw the deaths of Empresses Eugénie of the French and Augusta Victoria of Germany, King Nikola I of Montenegro, King Ludwig III of Bavaria and King Wilhelm II of Wurttemberg.

It's nice to see that even republic countries does grant their former royal head of state full ceremonial funerals and burials.

That's Respect !

I agree. The homage being paid to the King is quite remarkable. Yesterday, there was a solemn sitting of Parliament, with speeches by the leading actors of the Romanian state, the church and society, including the playing of the royal anthem, three days of national mourning and lying in state, a state funeral, including a gun carriage and military escort, bells tolling across the land and strikes and demonstrations have been cancelled as a sign of respect.

I’m not sure sharing things like this on social media does Nicholas any favours. It comes across as attention seeking at a time when the real focus should be the loss of his grandfather.

"Grand Duke Henri will attend the funeral of King Mihai of Romania on Saturday, December 16, the Grand Ducal Court has announced."

I haven't seen anything yet from the Japanese press on the Imperial Family representative. Likely Prince Akishino.

Same journalist again.....Is Nicolas working with this journalist to promote his agenda or is the journalist exploiting him to promote hers? She loathes the Royal house and has been attacking it for years - is Nicolas her latest "weapon"?

While it is great to see how all these former monarchs are treated (Elizaberh's lunch 5 years ago was a clear example as well), to me their position is quite different: imo there is a clear difference between a monarch who abdicated in favor of his/her child (so, the country is still a monarchy) vs a monarch whose abdication was forced and whose country turned into a republic.

You were right Duc et Pair . Important main Royal Houses will attend.

That is not Nicholas’ account.

The only one that is verified is “Nicholas de Roumanie,” and I am not sure that it shows up in a public search.

He may also still control “Principele Nicolae al Romaniei.” https://m.facebook.com/principelen1colae/

Alexander II of Serbia has confirmed as well and Princess Astrid of the Belgians will accompany her husband and brother.

I've not seen any news yet from the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Monaco or Liechtenstein.

I imagine Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, Crown Prince Leka II of Albania, Crown Prince Nikola II of Montenegro and Princess Irene of Greece would be there.

For Belgium they said King Philppe, King Albert II , Prince Lorenz and now Princess Astrid?

I wonder if it’s the case that the King is officially representing Belgium and the others are attending in a private capacity because of their relationship with the late King or the Crown Princess?

Georg Friedrich and Carlos were present at Anne's funeral as heads of the defunct houses of Prussia and Bourbon-Parma, so I expect them to attend this time as well (although Anne was a Bourbon-Parma princess and Mihai 'only' her husband).

If the Dutch King decides to send someone, I would expect princess Beatrix to attend (or he might opt to ask Carlos to represent the Dutch Royal Family as well - as he did with Anne's funeral).

Lorenz is one of the few holders of Romania's highest order (as well as princess Muna of Jordan who is also expected to attend), so I assume that is the primary reason he is attending (which of course is linked to his close relationship with the Romanian Royal Family).

The body of King Michael arrived at Otopeni Airport in Bucharest this morning.

He was transported from Switzerland to Romania aboard a plane of the Romanian Air Force.

The five daughters of the King (Margarita, Helen, Irina, Sophie and Marie) as well as two of his grandchildren, Nicholas with fiancée Alina and Karina, were present at the ceremony.

I think this is the 1st time I've seen Elisabeta Karina Medforth-Mills with the rest of the RF.

Very touching moments today : the exile of the King is finally finished and he has the official and national recognition that he has always deserved. There are voices that even speak about a proposal to be canonized.

The mass media does not speak a lot about the Mass with Requiem for the late King that will be celebrated on Friday the 15th of December at 5 pm at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Cathedral of Bucharest.

The King's coffin is from this evening at the Royal Palace:
