OQYANA receives Dubai Crown Prince

His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Dubai's Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, has praised the OQYANA sanctuary of supreme lifestyles, taking shape on Nakheel's 'The World' project, for its uniqueness and vision.

United Arab Emirates: Left to right: Al-Humaidhi briefs HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Information and Culture, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sultan bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of 'The World's master developer, Nakheel.

Visiting the OQYANA project at the opening of Arabian Travel Market, the Middle East's premier travel and tourism exhibition, HH Sheikh Mohammed said: 'This is really different. I am very impressed with its uniqueness; it is what we are looking for - totally outside the norm.'

HH Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on the project by Waleed Al-Humaidhi, Chairman of Kuwait's EFAD Holding, which is developing OQYANA, the world's first fully masterplanned elite island retreat, in conjunction with The Investment Dar.

'His Highness asked for a brief on each segment of the project which we have designed to augment his vision of Dubai,' said Al-Humaidhi.

OQYANA is the Australasia segment of 'The World' which is being built four kilometres offshore Dubai's Jumeirah coastline. It was named after the Arabic for Oceanic.

Meanwhile sales of property on the project- the first freehold offering to come out of 'The World' - began at Arabian Travel Market today. Put on the market were a mix of beach homes and Bay View and Sea View residences.

Following ATM, which runs at the Dubai World Trade Centre until May 6th, the OQYANA masterplan model will go on show at the new OQYANA customer relations centre in the Presidential Suite of Dubai's Shangri-La Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Shaikh Mohammed’s horses triumph in tough Australia Ride
By A Correspondent

2 May 2005

DUBAI — The spectators were treated to a spectacular racing finish as a trio of Australia’s leading riders galloped to the finish in an endurance ride in Australia recently.

The gutsy little stallion Al Mahzoz, owned by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, ridden and trained by Meg Wade, produced a brilliant burst of speed to win by a head.

This relegated two members of the Australian World Gold medal team to second and third place. Penny Toft riding her own Tora Blar Zay clinched second place — a nose ahead of another of Shaikh Mohammed’s horses, Karabil Noah, ridden by Kristie McGaffin.

The Capricorn Bonanza 130-km 3-star FEI ride attracted 50 riders who set off at 4am in the morning, aimed at reducing the time spent in the burning Queensland sun with a midday temperature of just over 30 degrees.

The course was divided into four loops of 36, 30. 34 and 30km. The trail may have been pretty flat but the majority of the going was along rough dirt or asphalt roads. The horses had little relief from the rock hard going as the grass verges along side the lengthy stretches on asphalt roads were baked hard and littered with stones..

Wade and Al Mahzoz were lucky to have finished as the pair had a dramatic fall midway through the third leg.

“I was cantering along a grass verge when the ground gave way, Al Mahzoz somersaulted and I was catapulted into the air.

“We were both dazed but miraculously neither of us hurt,’ said a delighted Wade after the finish.

The last of the 40 riders who completed finished over three hours behind the winning trio. Shaikh Mohammed’s other horses were successful — Cedara Lodge Remal and his home bred Magic Glen Brewster who was competing in his first FEI ride.

Shaikh Mohammed’s Australian Challenge
By A Correspondent

1 May 2005

DUBAI — General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, rode to success in the recent Endurance World Championships on a horse he bred in Australia — Nashmi (Magic Glenn Tulgar).

This weekend at Rockhampton in Queensland four more of his Australian horses will contest the 130km three-star FEI Capricorn Challenge.

They are all trained by leading Australian rider Meg Wade, who will ride his Bay Stallion Al Mahzoz ST and include his home bred gelding Magic Glenn Brewster who will be ridden by Kristie McGaffin, a member of the Australian World Gold Medal team.

The 130km course is set over unforgiving ground, hard and concussive, linked with temperatures in the 30’s it will be a hard ride to win.

Biggest ever Arabian travel market opens in Dubai

Sheikh Mohammed says Dubai is ready to offer tourism generation expertise to other destinations.

DUBAI - Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said the emirate is now a true tourist city with all the required infrastructure to attract visitors and its expertise could now be offered to other destinations.

Speaking after opening the largest-ever Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the Middle East’s premier travel and tourism show, which runs at the Dubai World Trade Centre until Friday night, Sheikh Mohammed commented: “The growth in this show reflects Dubai’s strong position on the international tourist map.

“We have achieved a great deal of progress and have gained much experience in the tourism sector and we are ready to help other countries to utilize this experience.”

The Crown Prince stopped at many of the stands at ATM to be briefed on new emerging projects. He spent several hours at the show, which this year features 1,800 exhibitors from 63 countries. It takes up 31% more floor space than last year.

In a welcome message to exhibitors and visitors, Sheikh Mohammed said: “The travel industry is a great economic force – the world’s largest employer. We all have an immense interest in its success as it is more than just an economic generator. It is an educator – a means to broaden our minds and gain a greater understanding of different countries and communities.

“Arabian Travel Market for the second year running has been named ‘Exhibition of the Year’ by Reed Exhibitions, the owning company of RTE, which organizes this event. The title was bestowed upon it after tremendous feedback from exhibitors who commented on the quality of its organization, visitor profile and the capacity for business generation. I would like to congratulate Reed Travel Exhibitions on this achievement.”

Arabian Travel Market 2005 is open to trade only visitors on May 4 and 5. It will be open to the public on Friday, May 6 from 4pm with the five-dirham entrance fee being donated to the Reed Travel Exhibitions’ supported charity ‘Just A Drop’ to provide clean water for Tsunami victims. Children under 16 will be allowed into the show free of charge on Friday providing they are accompanied by an adult.

World powers are not doing enough to make peace in region : Mohammed

May 6, 2005 - 06:53 -

World powers are not doing enough to make peace in region : Mohammed Abu Dhabi, 6 May 05 (WAM) -- General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, has blamed mojor international powers for the current situation in the Middle East, accusing them of not doing enough to make peace and bring stability in the region.

''Only world major powers are capable of implementing international legitimacy resolutions and pressing ahead towards reaching just solutions to all issues,' Sheikh Mohammed said.

He told the ''Gulf Defence'' magazine that :''active international powers have dealt with Middle East affairs as if they are a'' middleman'' not a ''broker or a fair judge''.The middleman is always seeking to strike the deal to get his commission and he doesn't care wether the price is fair for buyer and seller or there are any shortcomings or deficiencies, he said.

Speaking to the publication on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the UAE Armed Forces, he noted that "those players do the same .......they are only running after their interests and their policies are motivated by requirements of their current interests and not by the need for finding just solutions as per international laws and UN resolutions.

''We have seen how resolutions are executed in a way that only serves their interests and how instruments are innovated to put these resolutions in action starting from sanctions to direct military intervention,'' he said.

This, he stressed ''doesn't free stakeholders in the region from the responsibility as some of them provide- through their policies and behaviour- the justifications for those powers to act like that.

''Some of them do not read well the reality of the world order and international relations trends while others read well and only serve warning and criticism without doing anything to bolster their stance.

On terrorism, Sheikh Mohammed said collective local, regional and international coordination and cooperation were needed to confront the phenomenon.

''Combating terrorism is not an easy task and will not work through adoption of security means alone......if we consider terrorism like any phenomenon faced by nations and communities we should then tackle the causes to ensure control of it and finally eradicate it,'' he remarked.

''The first step to cure any disease effectively is to diagnose it''.

Sheikh Mohammed referred to some serious international efforts especially in Europe to diagnose the root causes of terrorism and the ground in which grows and factors feeding it.

''Settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict will eradicate some roots and getting Iraq out of it mess will cut others.....

national effort for achieving development, political and economic reform, entrenching social justice and transparency will also help in tackling some causes,'' he WAM/TF 18 47 CCCCQQE

May 7, 2005 - 09:50 -

Abdullah bin Zayed inaugurates Zayed City in Gaza Gaza, 7 May 2005(WAM)--Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Information and Culture today cut the ribbon of the Zayed City , a new neighborhood north of Gaza comprising 736 apartments which will shelter over 25,000 Palestinians.

The residential complex was built at the cost of Dhs.227 million.

The recipients include families whose houses had been destroyed by the Israeli army as well as those bereft of their children by Israel during the last four years.

Before cutting the ribbon, Sheikh Abdullah - accompanied by Palestinian Deputy Premier and Minister of Information Nabil Shaath- was received by cheering crowds who rained flowers on his and his delegation. He was flown to the new city by a Jordanian helicopter.

Addressing the crowd on behalf of the UAE delegation, Saeed Khalfan Al Rumaithy, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, conveyed the greetings of H.H President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as well as those of the UAE people and government to the Palestinian people and leadership.

+Our presence here today is an expression of solidarity with you. The completion of this residential complex underscores our modest commitment to alleviate your suffering+ Al Rumaithy told the jubilant crown amid women ululations.

He noted that the project was initiated by the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He told the gathering that the late Sheikh Zayed cared very much about alleviating the suffering of the Palestinians.

Underlining the UAE commitment to support the Palestinian people, Al Rumaithy said: +As you know, we just completed a similar project in Jenin and very soon we will accomplish another in Rafah. I assure you that the UAE under the leadership of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed will continue to support you until you attain your goals , including the right to a decent living in an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital+.

For his part, Palestinian Minister Nabil Shaath lauded the UAE and paid tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed, saying that he had immortalized his name in the heart minds and hearts of millions of Palestinians through his deeds.

Citing the large turnout for Sheikh Abdullah's reception, Shaath said the UAE and Palestine had had long and historical relations.

Mohammad hails role of nation's armed forces

WAM

The UAE Armed Forces have become the safety valve of the country's security and stability, according to a top UAE defence official.

Equipped with modern defence technology and highly qualified personnel, they can carry out any mission, he said.

"Our armed forces have built in a record time a well-qualified, trained national cadre and have acquired the most advanced defence and military systems, thus becoming a strong shield to protect its security and stability, thanks to the care of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan," said General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence.

He was speaking to Gulf Defence magazine on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the armed forces unification.

He added the UAE armed forces had taken part in military and humanitarian operations such as the liberation of Kuwait, peace-keeping missions in Lebanon, Somalia and Kosovo and relief and reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

He also paid tribute to the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his vital role in building the modern UAE army.

Shaikh Mohammad said major powers were not doing enough to bring peace and stability to the Middle East.

Preserving sovereignty is military's key role

WAM

Published: 7/5/2005, 08:12 (UAE)

Dubai:The UAE Armed Forces are fulfilling their roles as they are capable of carrying out all missions under the instructions of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Supreme Commander, said General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister.

Speaking to the Gulf Defence Magazine on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the unification of the UAE Armed Forces, Shaikh Mohammad said the UAE Armed Forces have managed in a record time to build qualified national cadres.

This is thanks to the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the driving force behind this landmark day.

"After years of building, training and the acquiring modern defence equipment and weapons, our armed forces have become the UAE's strong shield that has the ability to protect our land, waters and airspace," Shaikh Mohammad said.

"Our armed forces are a model in terms of qualifications and potential. They are proof of the ability of the UAE citizen to gain the most advanced sciences and deal with the most complicated and sophisticated technologies.

"The unification of the armed forces in GCC countries remains a target that we aspire to achieve."

Shaikh Mohammad held superpowers directly responsible for regrettable situations and events in the Middle East.

The superpowers are alone able to implement international resolutions as well as to push ahead towards just solutions for issues.

The armed forces are considered the backbone of any country, just as the human body's backbone. The body will be strong as long as its backbone is strong.

The armed forces can also be described as the human body's immune system, which is ready to defend and resist viruses and diseases, Shaikh Mohammad said.

Speaking of military and humanitarian tasks, Shaikh Mohammad said the UAE Armed Forces participated in the liberation of Kuwait and keeping peace in Lebanon, Somalia and Kosovo and providing medical services in Iraq and other countries.

The key role of the UAE Armed Forces has been and is still preserving sovereignty. It guards against any aggressive intent and safeguards national gains.

All these form the main elements in establishing security and stability. They reinforce the citizen's confidence in the present and the future and trust in the country, its policies and its regional and international position.

Shaikh Mohammad also held superpowers responsible for not having enough will to restore peace and build stability in the Middle East as they are alone able to implement international resolutions and capable of finding just solutions to issues.

The Middle East region is linked to the superpowers' interests. They want to settle scores in the Middle East.

Conflicts and competitions between superpowers have been going on in the Middle East for almost 100 years, Shaikh Mohammad said.

The Middle East has been an international issue since the end of the First World War. There is no other geographic region that has been affected by international equations and competitions as much as the Middle East.

The international powers have dealt with the Middle East's affairs as brokers and not as mediators or just arbitrators, Shaikh Mohammad said.

(Second half of the article)

The broker moves to complete a deal in anyway because his aim is to get a commission and search for another deal without bothering whether the price was all right for both the buyer and the seller, or the deal was fair.

This is similar to the international powers' way of thinking. They look after their own interests.

Superpowers handle international matters in compliance with their current interests, not in compliance with requirements of just solutions and international and UN resolutions.

"We have seen how these powers implement resolutions that serve their interests and how they create means to impose them, starting from imposing penalties to direct military interference," Shaikh Mohammad said.

"While we hold international powers responsible for the situation, we do not excuse other interested parties from their responsibility.

"These parties give, by their policies and acts, international powers pretexts and reasons, to do what they are doing. Some of these parties do not know how to read the international scene, international relations and changes.

"Some others read perfectly, but only warn and criticise without doing anything to correct their situation and improve their abilities."

Regarding terrorism, Shaikh Mohammad said fighting it is not an easy mission and military means alone cannot combat the problem. Fighting terrorism needs coordination among countries and collective effort.

"Combating terrorism needs coordination among international communities and collective effort as well as individual efforts by countries witnessing terrorist attacks.

"Each country should combat terrorism at the local level as well as cooperate at the regional and international levels.

"If we consider terrorism as a phenomenon just as any other phenomena, each phenomenon has roots that must be tackled to ensure the eradication, he said.

"Terrorism is totally rejected and cannot be justified. This does not mean we shall not understand the reason and motive behind terrorism.

"The first step towards treating any disease is diagnosis. No doctor can provide treatment if he does not succeed in diagnosing the illness."

To succeed in combating terrorism, Shaikh Mohammad said, "we have to address the roots of this phenomenon. Terrorism should be tackled at the roots."

Shaikh Mohammad said: There have been serious attempts by European countries to find the roots of this phenomenon and identify the components of the soil in which terrorism grows.

"International cooperation to combat terrorism should take two lanes, the first of which is the security level, while the second is positive steps to deal with the issue."

He spoke about the success of the seventh edition of International Defence Exhibition and Conference, saying the UAE has become the place of choice for exhibitors and buyers.

Exhibitors showcase their latest products, bringing them to the UAE while buyers find under one roof whatever they need. The exhibition is also a good chance to get to know the latest military products and select the best.

Regarding Dubai's preparations to organise Dubai Airshow, Shaikh Mohammad said preparations are all set to organise the latest edition.

Exhibitors have booked spaces, and this prompted us to set up a third hall at the Airport Expo. We have expanded the existing halls.

The show now is one of the top three exhibitions in the world. Participation grows between 12 to 20 per cent every year.

Armed forces training happens continuously and it is well planned. All our branches of the armed forces coordinate well.

Our armed forces are very efficient thanks to President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Supreme Commander, and his close supervision of the forces.

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also closely supervises our forces.

He said emiratisation has achieved remarkable success.

"Our armed forces are a model in terms of qualifications and potential. They are proof of the ability of the UAE citizen to gain the most advanced sciences and deal with the most complicated and sophisticated technologies. The unification of the armed forces in GCC countries remains a target that we aspire to achieve."
