Pavarotti bids lyrical adieu to thousands of Dubai fans
By Vinita Bharadwaj, Staff Reporter

Dubai:
Security of the highest order, an elegantly dressed audience and eminent leaders could only mean that a legend was performing.

Luciano Pavarotti was the legend in Dubai last night.

08_nation_pavarotti01.jpg

Pavarotti’s performance comprised seven sets that featured arias from operas by Puccini, Bellini and Tosti. General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Education, and Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Economy and Planning, joined nearly 4,000 people in enjoying Pavarotti's 90-minute show.

The concert was held under the patronage of Shaikh Mohammad.

The audience also included other celebrity guests such as members of the Ferrari family. Pavarotti's performance comprised seven sets that featured arias from operas by Puccini, Bellini and Tosti.

Shaikh Mohammad in conversation with Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti's appeal transcended generations as people of all ages and nationalities arrived to watch the tenor perform.

His concert in Dubai was part of his farewell tour that takes him around the world until next year.

Despite having no interest in opera or western classical music, it was the last chance to see Pavarotti live in Dubai that convinced Hassan Malek, a member of the audience, to go.

"I am sure that's why most people have come to watch a legend. Few have come for the opera ... All have come for Pavarotti."

Roberto and Isabella Totti of Italy were delighted that an icon of their country had such an universal appeal.

"We are so proud of him and wish others could understand the lyrics ... but his voice and personality will make up for it," the couple said moments before the concert began.

Soprano Simona Todaro, who accompanied Pavarotti, was equally brilliant, with a performance that sounded as good as other greats like Joan Sutherland, Jessye Norman or Leontyne Price.

Nearly 4,000 people gathered at the Madinat Jumeirah Arena to enjoy the 90-minute show. The event was brought to Dubai by The Talent Brokers.

Pavarotti had earlier told Gulf News in an interview that he is planning to team u with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras for two shows as the Three Tenors in Mexico and Germany, the latter concert to coincide with the 2006 World Cup.

Dettori rides Dubawi to fresh glory
By Our Sports Reporter

12 April 2005

DUBAI — Dubawi, partnered by Frankie Dettori, pleased his rider, trainer and owner as the impressive son of the legend stallion Dubai Millennium sprinted home spectacularly in closing stages of the 1600-metre trial race at Nad Al Sheba racecourse yesterday afternoon.

The race was attended by His Highness Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence and a number of Shaikhs and top officials.

Unbeaten in his three European outings last season, the three-year-old colt is heading for the English 2000 Guineas later in the month en route to the Epsom Derby on June 4.

“He is an easy horse to work with,” said a delighted owner Shaikh Mohammed bin Obaid Al Maktoum.

“I think he will also easily stay the distance of the derby. He is already a ‘Group One’ winner and his mother Zomaradah was a mile and a half nice mare,” he said.

“He is a nice horse race gallop,” commented the Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford as colt made his way to the winning enclosure.

Dubawi covered the distance in 1:37:07 to finish four lengths clear ahead of the Seamos O’Gorman mount, Tasdeed.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said he was really happy with the performance and style of the colt. “He won in good style,” he said.

Suroor admitted that they have to work harder to get him 100 per cent ready for the European tests.’

“He has been training very well during the winter at Al Quoz. Dubawi has the class to win the Guineas and the Derby and hopefully we will have the right horse this time,” he said.

“The race was very important for Dubawi and Dettori gave him everything to show his class,” he said.

According to Suroor, Dubawi beat the best European horses last season and proved to be the best of Dubai Millennium’s sons.

This was said by Thabo Mbeki, President of South Africa, at the Second Festival of the Cultures and Civilisations of the World Deserts, which opened in Dubai yesterday.

At a ceremony attended by General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, Abdul Aziz Bouteflika, President of Algeria, and other top officials, Mbeki said desertification in recent times has been accelerated largely by human interventions in the environment.

Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Adviser to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, at the world desert festival in Dubai last night. "As responsible governments we are today called upon to be increasingly aware of such human induced and natural forces when developing our national and global programmes for sustainable development, while, at the same time, ensuring that we limit human influences on sensitive natural systems, he added.

The challenges the desert regions face require a collective response from all, he said, adding that the desert remained extremely vulnerable to global warming and climate changes.

Penkenna Princess books Guineas ticket with DDF Stakes success Staff Report
shim.gif
Newbury: On a cracking day's racing at Newbury this afternoon, Dubai Duty Free weekend was rounded off with the sponsorship of two Group races including the Dubai Duty Free Stakes, one of the major trials for next month's 1,000 Guineas.

Penkenna Princess, who is trained not far from the course by Ralph Beckett, showed plenty of determination in the closing stages to win the race by a head.

"That is a cause for double celebration as it is not only the first winner I have had at Newbury in five-and-a-half years with a licence, but it is also my first Group winner. This is a special day for me," said Beckett.

Penkenna Princess will now take her chance in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1.

"She simply has to run there after this and I know that the owners would never forgive me if I said that she was going anywhere else but Newmarket after this. We shall go there and take our chance with the big guns," the trainer added.

Among those big guns is Suez, who won two of her three races last season in the colours of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence. She is expected to be a big player in the fillies Classic.

Dubai Success, winner of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Stakes in 2004, went for a repeat in this year's race and looked poised to overtake Day Flight but in ground made sticky by yesterday's rain and a dry night, he was unable to get there.

Frankie Dettori usually reserves his flying dismounts for the biggest races in the world's racing calendar, but he delighted the big crowd by celebrating with a dismount from Fine Silver, winner of the Stanjames Spring Cup.

The four-year-old was giving trainer Paul Cole his first winner of the season as he picked up well for Dettori to peg back the front-running New Seeker at the two-furlong marker and win with plenty in hand.

Cole said: "I have always thought he was a nice horse and fancied him a lot today. He was very unlucky in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot last season and could run in that race again when Ascot goes to York in June."

Penkenna Princess, who showed plenty of determination in the closing stages, will now take her chance in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1.

Following is the full text of Sheikh Mohammed's speech during the ceremony of Dubai Gov't Excellence Award: In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful, In April 1999 I announced my vision of transforming Dubai into the leading international hub for business, finance and tourism. And as usual many expressed their doubts. Others thought that it was only a PR campaign, and yet others believed that this vision was impossible to achieve. Of course I was aware of the difficulty in achieving this vision, yet I knew it is not impossible. This vision will take a long time to realize, but it will be achieved.

The future is our ally, and we must take part in its creation. Time is the most precious resource that man possesses. Time lost cannot be returned and the work that needs to be done always exceeds the time we have to complete it. Time is never unbiased, it is either a good friend or a bitter enemy.

The secret of success is efficient time management. And the secret of excellence is think quickly and act decisively.

We have launched many initiatives and successful projects, but we have yet to achieve our target. We are still in the first meter of the first mile.

Some officials think they have achieved what others could not, and that our country has reached the level of the most developed countries, many from the region imitate our ideas and copy our projects. To those I say be humble and patient. What has been accomplished is already done, and you have to think about the future. We are still at the beginning of a journey that is long and hard. We have much to accomplish in the humanitarian, social, cultural and economic fields and we must work hard to meet the needs of our society and our human resource development, to position ourselves regionally and internationally for the future.

Brothers & Sisters Today, the day we are recognizing excellence in Government, I would like to stress the importance of the role that the Government sector plays in leading us along the road to development and prosperity. We have to move forward in building a Government that works according to modern concepts, developed systems and clear vision, a government that is dynamic and proactive, able to evaluate and develop its roles and responsibilities in its operations.

We want a government in which all departments function as one team to achieve common objectives, without conflicting interests and aims, a government that shares its plans, initiatives, programs and decisions, with its human resources, a government that will not govern over people but will govern with people and earn their respect.

People are not numbers or papers in files, they are not robots controlled by remote. People have emotions, feelings, memories and thoughts. They think, analyze and compare. And if you do not take this into consideration in dealing with them, they will not reciprocate in kind and will not be enthusiastic in their work. Your successes and failures will not mean anything to them. They will not feel loyal and committed to the department or the organization they work for. They will not be satisfied and they will be careless in their work.

Because of this, I have ordered the Program Administration to measure employee satisfaction in Government departments. Based on the study, the best departments for employee satisfaction are: 1. Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone 2. Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority 3. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority And the worst departments for employee satisfaction are: 1. Dubai Justice 2. Dubai Development Board 3. Dubai Ship Docking Yard (JADAF) The aim of this study is not just to measure results, but to give voice to our employees and to know the difficulties that prevent them from being creative and achieving excellence.

The results of this study must be an instrument of change for our approach to dealing with employees, not just a study to be filed in the official cabinets.

I spoke last year about directors who hinder the creativity and ability of their employees, who refuse to fulfill the needs of training and development.

Unfortunately we still have some of these directors in our departments.

We also have some directors that manage by giving orders and instilling fear in heart of the employees - management that prevents the employees from giving their best. Other directors delegate everything to their deputies and assistants, who in turn deal harshly with the employees, also preventing them from any opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and talent. These directors and deputies are holding us back.

I want directors to be true leaders, not just employees busy with signing department documents, like vacation applications of office boys. I want directors who share responsibility with others, and do not centralize all the authority in themselves as if they are managing a despotic regime.

A large stack of signed documents does not indicate the success of the director. On the contrary, it reflects the inefficiency of the department.

The mission of the director is beyond this and much more important. His mission is to plan, supervise, and motivate his deputies and his employees, to develop second and third lines of employees in all the departments, divisions and units in his organization. I want directors who strive to develop the abilities of their employees and strengthen their confidence in themselves, encouraging them to be more productive and proactive.

Some people in the highest levels of management are afraid of new ideas.

They have a closed mind towards any new idea and think that accepting any new idea from others will compromise and threaten their position.

Some directors think that by occupying the top position, they are sitting on a store of ideas and knowledge.

My Brothers, there is not one who can possess all knowledge and ideas.

You must learn from our gracious Prophet (PBUH) who was always consulted his companions on all things great and small, asking their opinion, he was always glad to hear their suggestions and to implement their useful ideas.

I want a director who is brave and optimistic, and with a kind heart, a Director who is above the bureaucratic games of finding faults and magnifying them, or changing offices into places of gossip behind the back. Those who try to prove their success through the failure of others are not successful and are not happy in life. There are those who can just see faults in others, but be blind of their good side. I pity them and hope they will recover from this.

You may notice that I am emphasizing the role of the directors, whether they are general directors, executive directors or department directors, because the director is the most important person for his employees and the work environment. to the Director must be a good model for dealing with others, with a positive attitude and values of life and work, that he personifies in his decisions and behavior. I thank Allah that a lot of our directors are a really good example for their employees. We are very proud of them and their achievements, especially of their success in working with their deputies, employees and staff, enabling others to fulfill their responsibilities.

Brothers & Sisters, I want each one of you to understand that human resource development is our most important mission. The criteria to measure the wealth of any nation today is its human capital, not its monetary resources. We must work hard to build our human resources through training, education and developing talent, enabling it to be productive and creative.

Every official or director has role in this national effort. The efficiency of a director is reflected not only through implementing projects and ensuring the satisfaction of customers, but also through developing the abilities of his deputies and employees. This is why I have ordered the launch of a comprehensive program to build and develop human resources in order to establish a suitable mechanism for promoting active communication with our employees and honouring their efforts.

In our efforts to develop human resources, we must remember the role of women as partners of men in work and success. To catalyze the role of women and enable their active participation in the process of development, I have ordered the Program Administration to work on a new initiative: a three-year program for developing women leaders and enabling our daughters and sisters to attain higher positions in the government and private sectors.

We cannot ignore half of our population, our country needs the abilities of all its sons and daughters in order to fulfill the call of our country.

Thanks, Desertrosermrk.

Competitive season ahead: Suroor
By Our Sports Reporter

20 April 2005

DUBAI — Leading international trainer Saeed bin Suroor said he was happy with the good work of his horses before their tough European campaign.

“Dubai looked in good shape after last week’s trial race and would be shipped on Monday to our base in London to get ready for the 2000 Guineas,” the Godolphin trainer told newsmen after yesterday’s work.

Horses from eight of the Dubai-based stables performed at Nad Al Sheba turf track in what has been described as important test for them for a long European season.

The training session was attended by His Highness Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, Her Royal Highness Princess Haya bint Al Hussain and Shaikh Mohammed bin Obaid Al Maktoum.

“Doyen, Suez and Satin Kiss have already been entered in the English Guineas,” Suroor said pointing out that the son of Sadler’s Wells, Doyen, galloped to his satisfaction under Frankie Dettori yesterday afternoon. “He may also line up for the Irish Golden Cup over 2000 metres,” he said.

Papineau was partnered by Kirren McEvoy and joined Duke of Venice in the seven furlong gallop.

Suroor hinted that the son of Theatrical may be sent to the Group Two Duke of York Cup over a mile and six furlong.

“We have now about 200 horses for the European campaign and after the trials we will decide which of them would continue with Godolphin,” he said.

But Suroor noted that no final decision has been taken so far as to which horses will carry the hopes of the powerful stables in Europe.

“Regarding the two-year olds, they do not have many races and we must be cautious when dealing with them,” he said.

“But for other ones, the decision will be made after the main trial in the low profile races,” he explained.

However, Suroor expected a competitive season for his horses and looked confident that there is plenty of room for improvement over their last year’s performance.

“Most of our horses are in good form, and even Blue and Royals who sustained a slight injury and has been withdrawn from the Kentucky Derby will have the chance to race in the USA later in the season,” he confirmed.

Among the other horses which participated in yesterday’s work were Red Admiral, partnered by Seamos O’Gorman and trained with Echo Of Light, mount of Kirren McEvoy, Blatant, Daragh O’Donohoe up, ran with the Frankie Dettori’s mount Bayron, Fenshui, ridden by McEvoy, galloped with Suez, Dettori in the saddle, Latin sales in addition to Naheef versus Doyen and Latin Sales under Darragh O’Donohoe versus Sun Drop, Seamous O’Gorman up.

£900m Arab bid Sheikh planning £900m takeover

MANCHESTER United are a takeover target for one of the world's richest men.

United are believed to be facing a £900million bid from a company controlled by Dubai's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and backed by the government of the oil-rich country.

Sheikh Mohammed, who owns a huge string of top racehorses, has become friendly with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson through their love of the sport.

Last month his company, Dubai International Capital (DIC), bought the Madame Tussauds Group which includes Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures and a one-third share in the London Eye for £1.6bn.

DIC have been analysing the club for the last few months and are believed to be ready to table a bid.

"One of their prime concerns is to ensure there wouldn't be opposition from board and fans," said a City analyst.

"There is growing interest in the Middle East in English clubs. We've just seen Emirates Airlines finance the new Arsenal stadium. But whoever comes looking for United is going to have to win over the fans."

DIC's chief executive Sameer Al Ansari said last night: "I cannot comment on this suggestion."
