Sheikha Shamma follows footsteps of grandfather Zayed

ABU DHABI // It is the sort of project that Sheikh Zayed, founder of the nation, would have approved of.

So it is fitting that his granddaughter, Sheikha Shamma bint Mohammed bin Zayed, 18, has been busy rallying fellow students at Zayed University...Sheikha Shamma, a first-year student

Sheikha Shamma’s father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has said if she can raise half of the Dh50 million (US$13.6m) needed to build the project, he will match it. (What a guy! :flowers:)

Sheikha Shamma is raising money to expand the Special Care Centre which deals with the increasing number of students with special needs ranging from ADHD to Down Syndrome.

Quotes from the report:

"In Abu Dhabi, the issue of special needs, once a taboo subject, is one close to many people’s hearts.
“Because here we marry within our family, it is this that causes many deficiencies, which is why we have so many special-needs cases,” said Sheikha Shamma. “It gets spoken about openly. It’s important to be honest with what you have and what you’re lacking.”
“Before, people were ashamed if they had a special-needs child. Times have changed and these children just need to be educated like we are."

Thanks for the links, Kasumi! Interesting to find out that Sheikha Manal's husband has another wife too. Didn't know that. Off topic but is there lack of "suitable" men when the daughters of the ruling families marry married men?

Arabian princess to get heart surgery at Israeli hospital, November 23rd 2010

A daughter to one of the royal families in the Persian Gulf is in Israel undergoing a complicated heart operation, according to Knesset Member Ayoub Kara.
The royal patient insisted on undergoing the procedure here - after her doctors recommended one of Israel's leading hospitals as the best place to undergo the operation. For security and other reasons, the name of the hospital has not been published.
MK Kara said he was contacted by a Druze doctor who has been working in Europe for decades, along with the head of a well-known European medical center, and was asked if he could help the princess enter Israel for the operation.
After discussing the situation with Interior Ministry officials, Kara was able to secure an entry visa for the patient, he said, and she landed here last Thursday, accompanied by her husband and her personal doctor. She checked into the hospital Sunday, and the operation is set to take place Tuesday. - Full article

Well perhaps that would go towards healing the animosity of the arab world towards Israel, but somehow I sadly doubt it

In Iraq, unidentified kidnappers have abducted three sheikhs from the UAE. They all belong to the ruling family in Abu Dhabi. Also kidnapped is one of the leaders of an influential Iraqi tribe. Guests from the Emirates were falcon-hunting in a desolate area of Iraq. - Voice of Russia

So the sheikhs became free or not? And is the reason known why they became kidnapped? Money? Political or private reasons?
Wow....

This is not true, no other agency has reported & nothing in any Arab media which they would've picked up right away.

Sheikha Alyazia sells painting to aid Pakistan relief

Sheikha Alyazia bint Nahyan Al Nahyan is rarely seen in public and declines to be photographed, but each work bears her distinctive signature: a canvas buckled by its broken frame. The ritual is conducted before she even picks up a brush, when Sheikha Alyazia bint Nahyan Al Nahyan turns the blank portion away from her and smashes the wood with her knee.
These are serious projects for the 25-year-old daughter of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The sale of one painting recently raised more than Dh1 million for relief efforts in Pakistan and another is to be given as a state gift.
Gentle and soft spoken, the mother of three often ends up painting alongside her children, who like to copy her every move. Her three-year-old daughter Sheikha Sheikha doodles on her own canvas next to her mother, with her two-year old brother Sheikh Mohammed often joining in. - The National

Arabian princess's heart operation complete success

Under a heavy veil of secrecy, an unidentified princess from one of the Persian Gulf states departed Israel this week after undergoing live-saving heart surgery two months earlier. (see post # 342)
The 60-something princess arrived in Israel via Cyprus to avoid suspicion. Israel’s ministries of foreign affairs, health and interior maintained that secrecy for the couple’s safety.
The emergency medical procedure, which took place at Rambam Hospital in Haifa, was set up by Israeli Druze lawmaker Ayoub Kara (Likud). It so happened that the princess’ personal doctor is also Druze, and an acquaintance of Kara’s.
When the princess arrived in Israel, her condition had deteriorated so much that she was no longer able to stand or walk. By the time she left, the princess was able to walk and appeared far more healthy. - Full article

I would assume since they are referring to her as a Princess than it would be more likely to be form Saudi. If they had referred to her as a Sheikha it would be quite difficult to say which Gulf country she is from since they are all referred to as Sheikh & Sheikha.
