Thanks Jess for posting all these lovely pictures of the Queen at the Joriel School, they are just so fantastic - she is such a great carer and communicator with people and especially children! It's so wonderful to see!

Unfortunately, to me, looking like Silvia does, it can remove the focus from the things she's dedicated to and it gives her a shallow appearance :(

I really love Queen Silvia, and I wish she would find a deeper meaning with her life and hopefully she won't do this Brazilian voodoo to herself anymore.

I have the impression that the queen looks different, as if something has happened to her face. Could one of you please tell me what she did? What do you mean by Brazilian Voodoo? Thank you very much in advance.

She has had plastic surgery several times, I belive the first operation was around 1994
Roumors says that Silvia goes to a famous surgeon in Brazil and that she is there once a year to have something done. I think thats what Daneborn meant with Brazilian voodo

Yesterday Thursday, the King received publisher Bertil Ekerlid, author Herman Lindqvist and photographer Clas-Göran Carlsson in precedence at the Royal Palace of Stockholm to receive the brand new book about himself - titled “Carl XVI Gustaf – Portrait in Time” (released for the market today).

The book, written by the famous and much loved Swedish historian Herman Lindqvist, and with many pictures by photographer Clas-Göran Carlsson, the book is released just in time for the King's 60th birthday. It has been devloped during very personal conversations between the author and the King in His Majesty's office. More personal than ever, the King tells about his fatherless childhood, growing up surrounded mostly by women, becoming the youngest king in the world in the 70's and many other interesting tidbits.

Picture one is by Scanpix via the Royal Court's website, picture two is by Pressens Bild via TV4's website, and picture three is the front page of the book - from the website of the publishing house Ekerlids.

Translated from the website of Combined Challenge 06:

Yesterday the King oversaw one stage of the military exercise Combined Challenge 06, which has been carried out at various locations around the Stockholm County this past week. This is a unique military exercise were 6 000 conscripts (those doing military service) and 1 500 employees of the Defence are carrying out exercises after certain set scenarios, at a cost of over 40 million SEK. Combined Challenge 06 is to prepare Swedish solders for service abroad.

The Defence paraded through the streets of Stockholm to finally arrive at the harbour Frihamnen were they held one part of the exercise of the day. An attack scenario exercise was on the agenda for the day, and the King was very excited.
- Very spectacular and event full with all of these tanks and battle vehicles, he said as he was walking around.

In the harbour area, the King got a chance to talk to soldiers and their commands as well as getting acquaintanced with all of the vehicles.
- Really interesting and fun to be updated on all the new technique that has come.

From an observation spot the King could then follow the exercise, and he pointed out that it’s very important that Sweden and the Defence are out in the world, taking part in international efforts.

In the afternoon the King oversaw another exercise carried out just outside of the city.

The pictures are from the website of Combined Challenge 06.

In April, just in time for the King's 60th birthday, a CD named "Royal Voices" (Kungliga Röster will be the original Swedish title) will be released in cooperation with Swedish Radio's extensive archives.

The CD will feature a very personal interview with the King, done by the famous Swedish radio profile Ulf Elfving, in which they talk about gossip, leadership and the King's relationship/position towards/with death (among other topics). On the CD will also be King Gustaf V's throne speech from 1932, King Gustaf VI Adolf's throne accession and King Carl XVI Gustaf's speech after the tsunami catastrophe.

Yesterday evening the King declared Swedish Skiing Championships 2006 opened in the town of Boden in Norrbotten County (northern parts of Sweden).

- The initial starting point for the championships is good. Excitement and expectations are high. Now just give everything you have, the King said in his speech as he declared them opened at 18:53 PM.

Today His Majesty the King received the honour distinction "Special Citation of the Habitat Scroll of Honour 2005" by the director for UN-HABITAT, Anna K. Tibaijuka, at a ceremony at the Royal Palace. The King receives this honour for his commitment to people's environment.

From a UN News article:

In another development, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has been awarded a Special Citation in this year’s UN-HABITAT Scroll of Honour Award for “his tireless campaigning to promote an environmentally sustainable human habitat.”

“King Carl XVI Gustaf has always emphasized in his work the importance of urban-rural linkages to ensure sustainable development,” Ms. Tibaijuka said, citing his longstanding commitment to the natural environment and climatic change.

She also recalled that the King had recently brought to the foreground the links between climate change, natural disasters and their impacts on cities, towns and rural human settlements.

A worried Expressen (about tinnitus) reports from yesterday evening when the Queen, as protector of the Foundation Livslust, attended a hip hop dance performance "We are them" at Fryshuset. Accompanied by two of her Ladies-in-Waitings and two security guards, the Queen took good precautions and put earplugs in her ears before entering.

Has the Queen seen hiphop before?
- No, no, this is the premiere, the Queen said and laughed.
