The King and Queen will pause their summer holiday (at least I think it's a pause, since they normally holiday until sometimes next month) this coming week to perform some official duties in Dalarna and Skåne Counties. You can see the official engagements listed in the thread for them, go here.

Today over 400 people from all over the word, among them high politicians, royals, diplomats and celebrities, gathers in Sweden to celebrate the memory of Dag Hammaskjöld, the late Secretary General of the United Nations, who was born 100 years ago today.

The day started with a luncheon at Bergsjöholms Castle outside Ystad in Skåne County, after which the guests continued on to the late diplomat’s own summer home Backåkra, a big farm estate situated in beautiful surroundings on the countryside. There the festivities continued in different form, and a bust of the late Secretary General was inaugurated.

The first picture, from Helsingborgs Dagblad:

Here are some pictures of the events at both Bergsjöholms Castle and the late Secretary General's summer home Backåkra yesterday (29 July 2005), where. All pictures are from the municipality of Ystad.

2: The King and Queen with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laila Freivalds
3: The Queen with Lord Brian Unquhart (former Under Secretary General) who was the Secretary General’s personal representative yesterday, since Mr Annan himself is recovering from an operation. Lady Sidney Urquhart was also there; she’s a former assistant editor of TIME Magazine.
4: The King seated next to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laila Freivalds (to the left)
5: Mingling in the garden. The woman in white, actress Lena Endre, was the host.
6: Dr. Hans Blix, diplomat

Great photos. Good job finding them. Nice to see all of the diplomats there. A very convivial atmosphere it looks like.

The forum gathers 500 leaders from all over the world: royals, diplomats, politicians, business leaders, organisation leaders etc etc, and the theme this year is "How on Eath Can We Live Together?" The King inaugurated the forum yesterday, and the royal couple will stay when this day is over of the forum. The forum continues until Wednesday. From Isifa.

The King has got very good and positive reviews from the swedish media about his speach and that he raised the enviroment as the number one global issue. Nice to see the media saying something nice about him for a change... :)

Well I think that ever since the tsunami catastrophe and how the Royal Family and especially the King acted (and he opened up), people have got much more understanding for him and his life, and I think also the media have treated him better. But the reactions to his speech during the Tällberg Forum have been incredibly good, so it's like "cream on the mash" (Swedish saying, grädde på moset). I hope this continues.

Yes, let´s hope this continues. It was a good speech and something that needs to be said and done about at the highest echelons of all governments.

Another gorgeous photo of the queen. I like the nametag...

"Eh, Madame, what is your name?"

"Silvia"

"Silvia what?"

The King to Saudi Arabia

King Carl XVI Gustaf left for Saudi Arabia this morning to pay his respect upon the passing of King Fahd, and to congratulate the new King Abdullah and wish him luck. The Government will be represented by Vice Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm.

A minor "incident" took place this morning when the Vice Prime Minister had left Bromma Airport in Stockholm to pick up the King in Kalmar (biggest city closest to Öland) at their airport. Just after lift off from Bromma, the alarm went on the government plane in use, Swede Force 21, and it had to return to Bromma. But after a check everything was okay (the press doesn't say what was wrong) and they lifted again. The Vice Prime Minister and the plane picked up the King in Kalmar, and after that they landed in Linköping where they changed to another government plane, just in case (the first plane will be examined there too).

So several hours late, the Vice PM and King took off from Linköping's airport and left for Saudi Arabia. Despite the delay, they will be there in time, according to a Government spokesperson.

(source: multiple newspaper articles)

Picture of one of the government planes, from Expressen:

The King and Queen will pay an official visit to Australia in November! Too bad it's not a state visit, but an official visit is very nice too. The article that reports this says that more details will be made official shortly. The only thing they confirm now is a visit to SAAB in Salisbury, and that King Carl Gustaf might want to visit some wineries in the Riverland.

Great news. And what a shock that the King will be going to a car factory. :) Australia has been blessed this past year with royal visits.
