Amman, 28 Aug. (Petra)--His Majesty King Abdullah II on Monday phoned Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, who reassured His Majesty on the situation in Sudan following the floods during the past days which lead to damaging a lot of houses and displacing thousands of people.

Oh dear, this has shades of a Miss World contestants interview response

For those that don't know, Miss World contestants usually say the two things they want are to work with children and world peace

Peace is not just an abstract wish this specific time at Middle East, is always in Middle East's peoples's mind, they are going to suffer first if they don't have peace.
I don't believe Rania's wishes were hypocritical.The best wishes are the simplest. The beauty is in the simplicity, an ancient greek phrase says.

How funny! I wonder what context the remarks was made - was it an interview or a public statement?

It does sound like a Miss World interview and also a bit self-centered when she starts off by "As I turn 36..."

That said, though it is very easy for someone to say "we need peace" rather than to actually work out what needs to be done to acheive it, I guess the Middle East does need someone who says these sorts of things from time to time and Rania has chosen to fill that role. I think she can be more productive but hey, at least she is doing something.

I am not quite sure about the "As I am 36..." part of the statement, but I don't believe that her wish for peace is a "MissUniverse" type answer. She is Palestinian, so she has known war and the high cost of the "unrest" in the Middle East. She is also effected by the wars because she is Jordanian and also the wife of a King who acts as a sort of mediator between the East and the West. It is a tough position to be in. If there were no conflict in the Middle East, HM Queen Rania could have more time with her husband. Who could want anything more?

I just don't think someone who worked for less than two years as a bank teller at Citibank and as a marketing secretary at Apple is the best person to listen to about the subject of world peace as she has no more moral authority than any other woman on the street and I think praise should be given where praise is due, not just for words uttered in public.

Queen Rania didn't make the list of Forbes of most influential women in the world like the two past years,I wonder what's the difference between her work of this year and the two past years when she deserved to make the list

Oprah, L. Bush made the list as usually,but the big winner is Angela Merckel German chanceller.

Salome, Rania did make the list - she is number 81.

I think last year she was also in the 80s and before that I think she ranked number 15 or something (but that was clearly a fluke on the part of Forbes because how in the world can somone go from 15 on the list to 80?)

And I agree for the 15th to 80's thing,there's a big difference,does that mean a difference in the quality of her work between (before 2004) and (last year 2005 and this year 2006),or does that mean that she's not that powerful as some thought?

Queen Noor also disappeared from the list.

I don't think it's so much a difference in her quality of work - I just think someone at Forbes got overenthusiastic about her or something.

Too bad Noor didn't make the list...and also I think they should have included other Middle Eastern first ladies such as Suzanne Mubarak maybe or Sheikha Mozah who's pretty powerful herself.

Madonna,I was being sarcastic of course when I said that Queen Rania went from 15th to 81th because maybe there's a difference in the quality of her work,in my opinion,i think that being ranked 81th in the world is also very overrated,there's out there a lot of women who are really more influent and are changing things,and you are right about Sheikha Mouza thing in the ME area,when I think about an arab powerful woman,I think of her,she really changed the face of the Qatari royalty ,(which influenced the quality of life and the politics in Qatar),even if she's only the second wife,and also made her son the crown prince.

Also about Queen Noor,maybe she's not considered not that powerful since her son is not anymore a crown prince

Sorry Salome - I'm not so good at spotting sarcasm :) :)

But yeah, I think the whole Forbes list is a little weird and not necessarily accurate...for one thing, they look at media listings to rate how powerful a woman is when someone can be extremely powerful behind the scenes (i.e. if Dick Cheny were a woman, he wouldn't rank that high on the Forbes list but obviously he's very, very powerful). i think i read an article once about how the sister of bashar assad is supposed to be extremely powerful in syria.
