Queen Rania Visits Central Jordan Valley

April 19 (Petra) - Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah checked on Tuesday on the reality of health and educational services presented to families in Fannoush and Al Arda villages in Deir Alla.
Queen Rania started her visit at Fannoush Elementary Public School where facilities for 1st -4th grade students badly need improvement.
Queen Rania toured classrooms and chatted with students and teachers, underlining the importance of providing students with the proper environment that leads to quality education. The Queen checked on the school's needs of maintenance work to the building and classrooms and was assured by officials that the schoolchildren would join the new comprehensive high school premises at the beginning of the new scholastic year. Like other villages in different parts of the country, some basic services in need of improvement were highlighted and put forward when Queen Rania visited citizens' homes in Fannoush and had a first hand look at their living conditions.
The Queen urged that maintenance to homes be carried out and that a survey be undertaken so that families who have disabled children, be provided with specialized care. At Al Arda village, Queen Rania called on the Jordan Valley Women's Voluntary Society (JVWVS) where she was given an overview of the society's activities and met with members from the local
community.
Touring the society's productive kitchen, which is the only one in the district, JVWVS board members briefed Queen Rania on services provided in terms of training women and providing them with skills and jobs to improve their families' income.
Established in 1985, JVWVS aims to promote women's role in their society by raising social awareness, providing training and
jobs through projects like the productive kitchen, preserving national heritage by handicrafts like traditional embroidery, and
even offering the local community the services of a kindergarten.
Queen Rania instructed that the society be provided with computers and sewing machines to further enhance their facilities.
Before heading back to Amman, Queen Rania visited Muthalath Al Arda's public park and library, which will soon be equipped with computers, books and outdoor children's recreational games. She also urged that the new health clinic, construction of which was completed 6 months ago, be outfitted with all necessary personnel and equipment.
Tuesday's visit to villages in the Southern Jordan Valley is part of efforts undertaken by Queen Rania to reach out to citizens and address their needs through fields visits that aim to improve living conditions of all Jordanians. The comprehensive
approach underlines the need to further income-generating projects while checking on educational and medical facilities and aiding in their improvement.

King attends ceremony marking Prophet's birthday

By Mahmoud Al Abed

His Majesty King Abdullah, accompanied by HRH Prince Feisal, HRH Prince Raad Ben Zeid, Royal Court Chief Faisal Fayez and other senior officials, performs afternoon prayers at the Sahaba Shrines complex South Mazar on Thursday (Photo by Yousef Allan)SOUTH MAZAR — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday acted as patron at a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs to mark Prophet Mohammad's birth anniversary.

The event took place at the Sahaba (Prophet's Companions) Shrines Complex in the small town of South Mazar, 140km south of Amman.

King Abdullah joined worshippers in performing afternoon prayers at the mosque inside the vast complex before key speakers took turns to address the hundreds of people attending the ceremony.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi highlighted King Abdullah's efforts in supporting the role of mosques and imams in the nation's religious life and in promoting the true spirit of Islam as a faith of tolerance, dialogue and positive interaction with other cultures and religions.

In his address, former Egyptian Awqaf Minister Al Ahmadi Abul Nur also focused on this spirit of tolerance in Islam, citing historical examples from the life of Prophet Mohammad and encouraging Muslims to embrace such refined behaviour. He stressed that accepting others regardless of their faith and other differences is inherent in the Islamic faith.

The third speaker, Shiite cleric Sayyid Hani Fahs from the Higher Shiite Council in Lebanon, praised King Abdullah's pursuit of unity among Muslims, describing that as part of the Hashemites' historical role throughout Islamic ages.

Following the speeches, the King honoured Jordanian and Arab donors who contributed to the construction of mosques in the Kingdom. His Majesty presented them with Al Hussein Medal for Distinguished Performance of the First and Second order.

The Monarch also visited the shrine of Jaafar Tayyar, the Prophet's cousin and companion who, according to Islamic historical sources, fell martyr in the Muta battle against the Byzantines in 629AD, along with two other key Muslim leaders.

The three were buried near the battlefield and in recent years the Kingdom has embarked on an ambitious project to renovate about 12 religious shrines that are expected to attract more “religious tourists.”

According to Firas Abu Kheit, awqaf director in South Mazar, 50,000 people visit the shrines complex, which is still under renovation.

During Thursday's visit to the complex, King Abdullah toured an exhibition where blueprints and models of the plan are on display.

Adli Manaseer, an architect from the Royal Committee for the Renovation of Sahaba Shrines in charge of the nationwide project, and Abu Kheit told reporters that the JD2 million first stage of the Mazar project, which includes two of the three shrines, was complete, while work is under way on the second stage.

Later this year, the authorities will spent JD4 million to renovate the third shrine, build a Royal hall and multipurpose halls, a library and 12 parks inside the compound, each named after one of the 12 other Muta martyrs whose graves are anonymous.

The third stage is still on paper, Manaseer said. So far, planners are thinking of a panoramic cylinder-shaped domed building to be erected on the actual site of the landmark battle, a few kilometres to the north of the compound. The two sites, it is suggested, will be linked by a special road where tourists can travel on horse carts.

The shrines complex, particularly Jaafar Tayyar's tomb, is especially holy to the Shiite sect of Islam. A still inactivated tourism agreement signed with Iran almost two years ago provides for hundreds of thousands of Iranians to visit Jordan on a journey of faith.

Officials also expect Iraqi Shiites to visit these revered sites when the situation in their war-torn country stabilises.

Queen Rania visits Azraq Wetland Reserve, urges coordinated efforts among societies 27 April 2005

Her Majesty Queen Rania with students of the Prince Hamzah Elementary Public School in Azraq on Wednesday (Photo by Nasser Ayoub) AMMAN (JT) — Her Majesty Queen Rania on Wednesday applauded the citizens of Azraq for their success in utilising their area's natural resources to achieve community empowerment through best marketing practices of Jordan's natural and ecological wealth.

On a visit yesterday to the country's eastern region, Queen Rania met residents of Azraq as well as representatives of NGOs working in the area, and listened to them highlight their accomplishments and explain their needs to further boost their communities.

The Queen took a tour of the Azraq Wetland Reserve where she got an overview from reserve manager Sami Tarabay on the progress made in preserving wildlife and water resources in the area and challenges still being faced.

Established in 1978, the Azraq Reserve is one of the oldest reserves managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). It has undergone a $6 million restoration funded and implemented with the help of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility, a member of the World Bank Group.

The reserve offers a diverse range of facilities: Raised wooden trails through the marsh, a beautiful hide for watching birds in shade and comfort, a visitors' centre and fascinating archaeology, including a very rare Umayyad dam.

During the tour, Queen Rania chatted with students from RSCN nature clubs taking part in activities as part of the environmental education programme undertaken in collaboration with RSCN and schools in different parts of the Kingdom.

Meeting with officials and members of NGOs working in the north and south of the Azraq area, Queen Rania urged that there be close coordination among them to boost their capacity, secure more funding and generate more tourism, and employment in the area.

As part of outreach and awareness programmes to empower NGOs in the area, RSCN is working closely with local societies including Northern Azraq Ladies' Society for Social Development, Al Azraq Cooperative Ladies' Society, Southern Azraq Ladies' Society for Social Development and newly established Society for the Empowerment of the Rural Women, and the Chechen Charitable Society.

Queen Rania then visited the Nature Reserve Workshop, which includes production of environmental games, printing, sewing, recycled packaging and ostrich egg painting.

Before leaving Azraq, Queen Rania dropped in at Prince Hamzah Elementary Public School where she chatted with students and instructed that maintenance be undertaken to improve its condition.

She also talked with residents of the area about their concerns to improve educational, health and transportation services in the area.
