According to billed bladet, the daughter of princess Benedikte is pregnant with her first child! she announced her engagement a couple of months ago

Baby pictures coming soon! I'm sure Benedikte and Richard are both very excited, especially since they have only two grandchildren right now, both of whom live in Paris.

I'm curious, though - I know it's relatively common/accepted in Denmark and the rest of Europe to have children before marriage, but is this at all scandalous, or at least embarassing, when it occurs for royals? Or does anybody really care that she's not married?

Wonderful news but I had expected her to be pregnant after getting married, it seems weird for a royal to fall pregnant while not yet married.

I thought the same thing. On the other hand, her son has been living openly with a woman to whom he is not married for quite a while and she hasn't seemed unhappy about that (at least publicly).

Did Nathalie seek the Queen's permission to marry? IIRC, when she and her sister sought an opinion about whether they were in the succession, the answer was probably not, so I'm not sure if she would need to/bother to.

It seems they are already civilly married. The religious wedding will take place in 2011.

The 34-year old Danish born but German based Zu Saeyn-Wittgenstein and her partner Alexander Johannsmann were legally married shortly after their engagement was officially announced by the Danish Royal Court begin January 2010. Their church wedding will be next year.

I'm sure! I don't doubt that she's very excited about the new grandbaby, but I can't imagine that she's pleased about how it's getting here! I know out-of-wedlock births (or conceptions, I guess, since the parents are married now, probably because of the pregancy) are much more common in Europe than they are here in the States, but Benedikte seems to be the soul of propriety and protocol. She seems a little stiffer than your average live-and-let-live Scandinavian, so I imagine Richard probably had to peel her off the ceiling after this announcement.

Yes, tt's now normal in European culture to first become pregnant & later marry and now nobody condemns that if future parents truly love each other
Sincerely, I had a presentiment that it could happen in case of Nathalie & Alexander - they are both in their 30's already.
I wouldn't be surprised at all, if the same happenes to Duchess Tatiana of Oldenburg & Axel de Chavagnac.

Congratulation to them, i must say it seems extrange an" accident" like this in royals, you would think first marriage after the baby, in the other hand she is not getting any jounger so if they wait it might be difficult to get pregnant so i am sure they are so happy about it, it is not that she is the CP heir to the throne so I presume it is ok in this days and acepted but society, but the civil wedding so fast of course to have the baby born already in a marriage!

I can think only to a consequence, that the baby won't have rights to the British Throne, being born out of wedlock; but if it is true that Nathalie and Alexander are already married, it won't be a problem, at all.

I agree with you -- it certainly would raise more than a few eyebrows in my neck of the woods. :-)

When I read that the civil wedding has already taken place and the church wedding would be next year, I was sort of disappointed. I like to see a bride in white who isn't being escorted down the aisle by her toddler.

But, things happen and you can only play the hand you've got.

The situation doesn't bother me at all. Yes, she was two months pregnant at her engagement, but it isn't earth shattering. Emmanual Filiberto and his Clothilde were married in a full blown Catholic wedding when she was six months pregnant and practically waddling.
I'm happy for the couple and now after a Swedish Wedding, we have a baby in the Danish Royal house to look forward to. Next year there'll be a beautiful bride and if her child is included, which I'm sure will happen, that will be something to look forward to.
