Opening of Parliament (Folketinget) 2003-2023

Haha I love the air kisses.

I watched the opening in TV as usual.
I think it was a good speech from ourPrime Minister.
And we are always guaranteed to see Frederik and Mary sending each other loving/flirtatious glances during the one hour opening speech. They also comment to each other during the speech and I think they have their own private opinion about things in our country. It is private, but it could be interresting to hear them :D

They all look great. Mary is good at recycling very old clothes. This black jacket and purple dress is quite old, isn’t they?

Was the opening of the Danish Parliament always such a simple ceremony or was there more pomp in previous reigns?

Always nice to see the Crown Princely Couple and Princess Benedikte with the queen.

It is sad Princess Marie did not attend . She is Member of the Royal Family and is no wotking.

The current setting has been pretty much the way it's done since the change of the Constitution in 1953.
Prior to that it reminded quite a lot about how the Norwegians do it today. That is the Monarch had a more active role and was seated at the floor of the Parliament.
But even then there was little pomp and circumstances.

The gentleman presenting flowers to QMII is the Chairman of the Parliament, Henrik Dam Kristensen, Social Democrat.
The members of the Presidium stand in order of seniority from the curb, with the Chairman furthest away from our angle. Then the Second Chairman, Third Chairman and so on.
While the Chairman is always elected, the members of the Presidium earn their seniority according to how many seats their party has. (Except, if the party with most seats also hold the post of Chairman. That is the case with the Social Democrats) That's why the Second Chairman is from the Liberal Party (which incidentally is also the main opposition party.)
Confused?
Don't worry, it's just a little detail designed to making things work on as equal footing as possible and to prevent one party from having all the main posts.
So the members of the Presidium represent different parties.

The Chairman escorts QMII inside.
The Second Chairman escorts Frederik.
The Third Chairman escorts Mary.
And the Fourth Chairman escorts Benedikte.

Well inside, and after the DRF has been seated. The nestor of the Parliament will open the procedings and unless there is an election for a new Chairman, he will ask whether there are any objections to the current Chairman leading the rest of the proceedings. There never are.
The Chairman will then take over and after a few details, he will give the word to the PM, who will outline the governments policy and intentions for this session and also describe the current conditions of the Realm. - It's akin to the State of the Union Address in USA.
That speech is usually pretty long and not always that exciting...

And it is here the photographers and camera-people step in. The aim is to catch a member of the DRF or an MP dosing off, or at least looking like they are bored stiff! That's part of the fun.
And as the DRF members in particular are supposed to listen, without showing excitement or disapproval, it's very easy to look like they are bored witless. :D

Tomorrow will be a big day of debate, where pretty every single party will say how they think the government's policy and intentions are hopeless and inadequate and certainly wrong and the opposition parties will point out how things would be so much better if they were in charge.
Fortunately the DRF are spared that marathon-ordeal.

It appears to be a mixed demonstration with representatives for various people (*) from nurses advocating better pay and conditions, to LGBTQ people demonstrating for more tolerance at places of education.

I could not make out what was yelled, judging from the live comments it appears to be anti-vaxers who called for Mary.
Mary has personally encouraged vaccinations and she is an active advocate for LGBTQ rights, so it's hardly a surprise they wanted her attention.

(*) Legal demonstrations in DK requires a permit from the police, so that they can protect the demonstrators (I.e. protect freedom of speech and freedom to congregate) and direct traffic. Of course for security reasons and space I assume representatives only were permitted to demonstrate in the inner courtyard of the Parliament.
Normally that area is occupied by onlookers.

Oh wow....okay. I did pick out the word vaccine from the commentary and them saying kronprincesse (sp?) alot. Is it me or did Mary look at times slightly uncomfortable (it was like split second moments). Maybe it was just me...lol. I also noticed she didn't really wave to the crowd when exiting the car like she usually does - In fact, I am not sure she even looked over to the crowd. Is there a large anti-vax movement in Denmark?

That's probably prudent of her.
She did look briefly at the demonstrators.

Presumably they had been warned in advance.

The anti-vaxers are very few, albeit it vocal. And IMO they get an disproportionate amount of attention.

On a day to day basis they can be expected to be told off by family, friends, coworkers and everybody else their voice their opinion to.

:previous: I think Mary did the right thing because acknowledging anti-vaxers is counter-productive. Attention is like petrol on a fire.

The attendance of members of the Danish Royal Family at the official opening of Parliament is an affirmation of hope and I believe HM, Frederik, Mary and Benedikte are well aware of this in these strained times.

I agree. Acknowledging the negative jeers is giving them the attention they want. It is always the whiners that even if few, are the loudest and the media gives them attention (if it bleeds, it leads as they say).

For years I have wondered why the Folketing does not spice things up a bit, like in Sweden, Norway or even in republican Germany, where floral decorations are added for the occasion.

Now the royal guests are just seated on the public tribune and then they leave. I would have used a bit more of decorum.

Tomorrow is the first Tuesday in October and that means the Opening of the Parliament, where the DRF are always invited as guests of honor.

It's usually very well covered by the press. - This year even more so, I suspect. And not only for the DRF.

Anyway, DR1 no doubt send live.
Billed Bladet will send live.
BT will probably provide at least a live blog.

For additional videos and photos, keep an eye on Tv2 and Berlingske.dk.

Please remember the TRF rules that posting links only isn‘t allowed, posts of that kind have therefore been removed.

When did the monarch stop giving the "speach from the throne"?

When did the monarch stop giving the "speach from the throne"?

Don't know. During the 1920's I think.

There are considerable protest about the king being on the floor of the Parliament back in the late 1940s. That was one of the reasons for the change in the Constitution in 1953.
It was believed that an unelected person should not be on the floor of a democratic parliament. On top of that there was ideological majority for a republic back then - but not a majority in the population.
And at that time the Communists were well represented in the Parliament.

- And that's how the Danish Monarch ended up being a guest of honor on what we call the Celebration of the Democracy. I.e. the opening of the Parliament on the first Tuesday in October.
And also why the DRF sit on the balcony among the guests and onlookers.

- I think that's a good compromise. It illustrates the link between democracy and a monarchy and how these two entities can easily co-exist.

Will Prince Christian be attending regularly starting next year now that he ie turning 18

He will certainly be invited.

And depending on him having pressing duties elsewhere, I believe he will be expected to attend.

He is after all the future heir. And this is the Celebration of the Democracy.
