State Visit from The Netherlands to Denmark: March 17-19, 2015

Wonderful to be able to see so much of the gala dinner live via internet. Thanks for the link! :flowers:

Fun to see the actress from Borgen attending the dinner, and W-A referring to the popular Danish TV series. The two speeches were very different, very much "two generations" speaking IMO.

I also saw Lene Balleby (how old is she? Nearly 60?), Tanya Doky, Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Britt Siesbye. All very pretty. There was just one lady, who arrived among the first in the hall with her partner, a grey haired odd looking woman with a sort of poneytail-bob that had a darker colour. Who was that?

I thought Mary looked tired and a bit strained yesterday. She seems to have lost weight. Did anyone notice it too?

Also, Margrethe seemed nervous when reading her speech and tripped over her words quite a lot. Maybe they were all a bit tired.

The Crown Prince Couple and the Royal Couple has went on board the ferry to Samsø. They went through the cafeteria before they walked to a private area and got a little coffee before the day's program starts.

Two chic women, huh? I think they have chosen clothes together this morning :D
I totally adore Mary's chic look!

This morning?
I think they had a long phone call weeks ago during which they decided: One wears grey and one beige on the first day and the next day it's the other way round. :)

Queen Máxima is a bit more feminine with her elegant gloves and the open neckline with her golden collier. The coll pulli worn by Crown Princess Mary looks a bit too Nanny McPhee for this event...

It's possible that there is 'consulting' going on at some level. It just wouldn't do to have two high-profile women wearing the same outfit! Today's outfit is a different look for Mary, but I like it. She looks warm and cozy. Also like Maxima's hat - at least it's not one of those huge ones she sometimes wears.

These visits must be tiring, keeping to a schedule, making sure you don't get caught frowning or looking bored. As for QMII, I'm in that same generation, and I have to pace myself. Everything takes longer than it used to!

Slightly off-topic: the Prime Minister looks really strained lately. I first noticed it at the vigil for the shooting victims, but that was understandable. But now she looks tired, and dare I say...older. Muhler?

It is a bit as if the two ladies switched colours: yesterday Maxima in grey and Mary in camel/nude, today the other way round. On both days the camel/nude coat is more tailored/fitted/feminine (whatever you want to call it) than the wider, loose fitting grey coat. The style of their hats was matching on both days. The two ladies photograph well together, that they made sure of imo.

Yesterday's gala:
Robin Utrecht has amoung others wide shots of the Banquet Hall on his site: STATE VISIT TO DANMARK KING WILLEM ALEXANDER AND QUEEN MAXIMA DAY 1 - Images | Robin Utrecht | Photoshelter

On the far right you can see Princess Elisabeth with her sapphire tiara: robin20150317_8822.jpg | Robin Utrecht | Photoshelter

I would have loved to see better pics of her, but she chose to stay in the background.

I noticed that both W-A and Maxima have an addition to their outfits - W-A has a blue circular pin on his lapel, Maxima a small blue ribbon on her left shoulder.

Could this be a miniature of the Order of the Elephant? The ribbon is the correct colour.

Yes, it definitely is. The Dutch Court is sharp on these details.

On April 30th 2013 (Abdication ceremony) the Prince of Orange wore the miniature (bâton) of a Ridder Grootkruis in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. See the picture of the King (click on the picture to blow to XXL)

After the signing of the Act of Abdication but before the balcony appearance suddenly the bâton has been changed: the brand new King now sported the miniature (bâton) of a Ridder Grootkruis in de Militaire Willems-Orde, the oldest and highest Order. See the picture of the King (click on the picture to blow to XXL).

So this means that there is someone (the King's valet?) who knows exactly that on that moment, this-and-that decoration, must be ready for His Majesty... I bet this valet has taken attention that the lightblue bâton of the Elefantordenen is ready for the King...

Uh, uh, you are tempting me, MidwestMom. :p

I shall refrain from suggesting she is in need of a new botox injection. Nor shall I mention that she in all likelihood is facing the most disastrous general election in the history of the Social Democratic party later this year.
But I will merely observe that she looks her age...

The mayor of Samsø, is Dutch BTW. IIRC he has lived on the island for 23 years and you literally can't tell that he isn't a native. In fact people often presume he is from the island.
He was I believe on of the Dutch farmers, who for want of land in the Netherlands settled in Denmark instead, where there is still plenty of farmland to be had.

On a day like that a Dutch speaking mayor is indeed a bonus, but it is expected that he will speak English most of the time.

Not only have the islanders turned out in force, people have virtually migrated from Eastern Jutland Western Zealand for this visit. It's cool enough to get a visit by M&F but to have Queen Maxima there as well is an extra bonus! Maxima, and her husband too, has a very good press here in DK.

Speaking as a Dane, and I'm certain that sentiment is shared by the resident Dutch, I think we can be pretty pleased with how our royal families have represented themselves so far.

In that case she would find a symathetic ear with our minister of Foreign Affairs, who was seated next to her at the banquet. His party will most likely face a disastrous result in today's provincial elections.

In 1922 Q. Wilhelmina visited the island of Amager. Something which was repeated by Juliana in 1953 and by Beatrix in 1971 (not during a state visit) as Dutch farmers settled there in the 16th century.

That's correct. Dutch merchants and craftsmen were invited to settle in Denmark on the island of Amager, right next to Copenhagen to be exact.
That was mutually beneficial. For the Dutch Denmark was a land of opportunity, where you could create a fortune and advance up the social ladder and indeed there are still a number of prominent Dutch names around today, Meulengracht for example.
For Denmark it meant an introduction of new ideas and new methods. Like to distinct Dutch windmills, that many Danes believe are very Danish.
It also meant that DK and NL became allies against predominantly Sweden during the countless wars between Denmark and Sweden (*). It was very much due to Dutch reinforcements that Copenhagen beat back a Swedish assault in 1659. Had the Swedish storm succeeded Copenhagen would have been plundered for three days, the city burned and the population more or less massacred. The Swedish king had decreed "free plunder", that would very likely have meant the end of Denmark as a nation. (**) Having a huge Sweden completely domination Northern Europe and the entrance to the Baltic was politically totally unacceptable to the rest of Europe but the Swedish king hoped to present Europe with a faith accompli. I.e. "Copenhagen is in my hands, the Danish king is dead, what are you gonna do about it"!?!

Around the same time French Huegenottes (spl?) settled in the fortress town of Fredericia in Jutland. They fled from religious persecution in France. So assimilating limited groups of foreigners into the tribe is nothing new.

(*) It is believed by some sources that Denmark and Sweden have the world record of most wars fought between two countries. One average once every single generation for some 600 years.

(**) The problems for Sweden was that Sweden might conqueror Denmark alright but Copenhagen was so centrally placed and was so big a city at the time that it would most likely usurp Stockholm as a capital for a united Nordic empire anyway. Moving the entire political and commercial balance of power back to Denmark anyway.

Both Queen Maxima and Crown Princess Mary failed to look chic in capes.

https://ru-royalty.livejournal.com/2839162.html

The above post by kapenot88 contains photos of the Dutch State Visit to to Denmark (Day 2).

Heu.... Queen Máxima did not wear a cape but a well-tailored beige coat by the Danish couturier Claes Iversen.

:flowers:

On State Visits Queen Beatrix used to change three times a day (and in her slipstream Princess Máxima): morning attire, midday attire, evening attire.

So far in Denmark on Day 1 and Day 2 during daytime the same outfit was worn, be it that the eye-catching grey coat was removed later to unveil a nice blue gown with an impressive sapphire brooch, see: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/03/17/26BC73C900000578-2998668-image-m-115_1426605517154.jpg.

Maybe because the program was really cramped (no possibility to change dress at Samsoe?) and it continues with two more days in Germany. I have the idea the State Visits become more and more cramped and quick-quick-quick, in previous years there was a calmer pace and possibilities for some private pastime for the visiting royals.
