Danish Royal Family Christmas: 2003, 2004, 2006-2014, 2016-2023

Awww...I love that Vincent has taken an interesting in the culinary world . Good for him!
Josephine seems interesting in dancing and theater like we always knew she would from all those ballet poses and spontaneous dance moves when she was as small child.??

There won't be any Christmas Gala event on December 20. December 20 is only the day Queen Margrethe takes up residence at Marselisborg Palace where the family will celebrate Christmas.

I guess you are referring to this Hola article:

** La Navidad de la Familia Real danesa, marcada por la unión y por una gran cena de gala **

The article is based on the information the Palace has given on November 24 about the family's plans for Christmas and talks about previous Christmasses, and nothing new.

Thank you, Iceflower

The first Sunday of advent.
Some light all four candles and let them burn a quarter way down, but most only light one.

We, or rather Mrs. Muhler, has opted for a archetypical Danish Advent wreath this year. White candles on a green wreath with read ribbons. The national colors on a green background. (Did I ever mention that we are pretty obsessed with our flag in this country?)

- Ours is standing on the table though.
Right next to the calendar candle, counting down to Christmas.

I wonder if our candles also symbolize that?
Anyone in the know?

Is there a theme for the Advent calendar this year, or just "random Christmas stuff"?

How lovely!

Possibly - it seems to vary to some extent based on both the Christian denomination and country per Wikipedia -

Advent wreaths are circular, representing God's infinite love, and are usually made of evergreen leaves, which "represent the hope of eternal life brought by Jesus Christ".[13] Within the Advent wreath are candles that generally represent the four weeks of the Advent season as well as "the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus Christ" although each of the candles can be attributed its own significance as well.[13] The four candles of the Advent wreath specifically symbolize the Christian concepts of hope, peace, joy and love, with these candles being lit subsequently throughout each week of the Advent season.[14][15][16][17] Many Advent wreaths also have a white candle in the centre to symbolize the arrival of Christmastide, which is known as the 'Christ candle'.[18] It is first lit on Christmas Eve, the beginning of Christmastide and may be lit throughout the rest of the Christmas season, as well as during Epiphanytide.[18] The Christ candle is coloured white because this is the traditional festal colour in the Western Church.[19] An additional layer of meaning names the first candle as the Messiah[20] or Prophecy[21] candle (representing the prophets who predicted the coming of Jesus), the second is the Bethlehem candle (representing the journey of Joseph and Mary), the third represents the shepherds and their joy, and the fourth is the Angel's candle, representing peace.[20](..)

A lovely video indeed.

I notice they decorate their tree only with glass ornaments. (They are actually quite expensive! And as such are often inherited.)
Rather than also using more or less home made hearts, cones and paper figures. After all one of the delights of making Christmas stuff with your children or grandchildren is to see their pride when the things they made being added to decorations on the tree.
A feature that are practically a must are flags. (You know, the obsession about our flag thing.)
I also notice that this tree is standing in the reception room. Perhaps they have another and more personal in their private apartment?

First a number of pretty typical Christmas trees you will find in most DK homes.

This is professionally decorated, but still very typical.

December 3 Christmas calendar. Lovely Queen

A wonderful Christmas tradition and lovely to see the queen's participation in the video.

What a lovely video. Looks like everyone was having a great time decorating the tree! ?

im guessing the Christmas tree video was done last week, we can spot a Christmas tree at Mary's reception for her foundation.
https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...0mY-o6c9rAdFS35Jxdj5jWYvrk610FnKg&oe=65725CD3

Among others, I spot a shark ornament. (a nod to Frederik's tattoo and his time in the Special forces perhaps? : ) )

Good catch. Yes, it seems to be the same tree seen in the photos from the Mary Foundation reception which was on November 30th.

It is lovely to see the whole family doing something as normal as decorating the Christmas tree, even the dog is getting in on the act. They all look relaxed and happy enjoying this family time.

A juletræstæppe - Christmas tree rug, is something that is often inherited in DK.

You can naturally buy some that already have some sort of pattern or decorations, like these:
https://ribesbroderioggarn.dk/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/8-42.png
https://shop77167.sfstatic.io/upload_dir/shop/images/_thumbs/75-0339_vintersportsnisser.backdrop.gif

But they are also designed so that you add something ever year. It's a tradition in many families that something new is being embroidered into the rug ever year. It can something you did, especially if you have the talent, but the most charming additions are of course those made by your children or grandchildren.
Like here:
https://www.antikvitet.net/images/antLarge/321477.jpg

And depending on your skills you can find countless patterns you can make yourself.

The main purpose of the rug was initially to catch the needles, second to be decorative and at the same time serves as a DIY show-off.

For December 7 lovely Princess Benedikte was photographed decorating a Christmas tree in the stairwell of the Christian VIII Palace in Amalienborg.

"The little spruce tree is decorated with Christmas balls and other decorations that have followed the princess through her life. Among other things, a few (..) from Switzerland, where Her Royal Highness has often celebrated the holiday"

I guess we may not see that much of the CP family in this years calendar, unless they have already produced some material.

Well, it's only 10th December and 3 times already the calendar showed members of the CP family.
1st Dec: Prince Vincent in the kitchen
4th Dec: The CP family decorating a tree
10th Dec: CP Frederik lighting the second candle.

I have the feeling next Sunday the third candle will be lit by Prince Christian (after the Queen and the CP). And perhaps we will see the two girls doing something together.
Last year Princess Athena was shown with a gingerbreadhouse. So perhaps this year someone else of Joachim's family will appear in the calendar?

An extremely popular children's Christmas song on fifes and drum! Now, I've heard it all. - But what a great idea.

Here is the original:

The Tambur Corps of the Royal Lifeguard Regiment, are the fifers and drummers. They are not a part of the Music Corps of the same regiment, who are all professional musicians.
The fifers and drummers are signalmen. The regiment is a grenadier regiment making it a heavy regiment of the line. Commands within a regiment of the line were conveyed with drums in contrast to light and jäger regiments who used a bugle or a horn.
The fifers are drummers are always paired. If the drummer gets shot in battle the fifer will take over.
During the march the fifer will play a merry tune with the drum keeping the cadence in order to make a tedious march more endurable.

The fifers and drummers are professional soldiers with lots of experience in drills, because it takes experience to keep the cadence and maintain it. And remember all the tunes and they play them well. You can't expect a conscript to have picked that up within a month.

The most well known in DK is of course the Colour March and those of you who have followed the DRF will have heard it many times. Because it is also a salute, being played whenever a DRF member is arriving or leaving. (At 0:33).

Today's video, December 15, shows Queen Margrethe wrapping Christmas presents.

"The Queen has carefully chosen which colors of packaging and ribbons to have so that the Queen's Christmas presents stand out year after year".

16 December

In a very short time, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and the children will travel home to Denmark from Washington D.C. to spend Christmas holidays with family and friends.

But before the journey, the family and the dog Cerise had gathered last night for an early Christmas dinner, where Princess Marie had made her favorite Danish dish, roast pork.

Thus the Christmas peace settled down in the American home with a little Danish Christmas traditions.

True. Our Marie has on several occasions expressed her fondness of flæskesteg, as we call the dish. Not least the crispy rind, which is absolutely delicious and once you have tasted it, you're hooked! - You belong to us.

Here are a couple of recipes. It's not that easy to get perfectly crispy mind you. No microwave, no airfryer, no grill, it's the hard way in the oven.

Matches. I've noticed it before the DRF members tends to use matches.
They must pretty much be the only ones left in the whole country to use matches to light candles IMO.

And that says a lot, since every Dane lights about 64 tonnes of candles on average a year!
Okay, perhaps slightly exaggerated, but we are still pretty obsessed with candles even despite the much increased (and safer!) use of LED-candles.
I believe we still comfortably hold the world record in use of candles.

The average DK living room looks like a major forest fire during the winter months.
A sight like this is extremely common, certainly here in the Muhler residence:
