Danish Royal Family Christmas: 2003, 2004, 2006-2014, 2016-2023

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
That, unfortunately, is true.

Here and in other Continental European countries foreign correspondents are expected to be well versed in the royal families of the monarchies they are stationed in. In the UK press even the royal reporters are often woefully ignorant about senior royals from other countries and that ought be considered basic knowledge for any royal reporter.

I think Christian is around. But a teenage guy, trotting the streets with his parents? Shopping? - Nah.
Not when there is a nightlife, probably relatives and their friends of his age he can hang out with and a beach nearby. And no one knows him, so he can let his guard down a little.
Oh, he's around alright. And having a great time I trust.

I agree about Christian. He's probably hitting the beach with his cousins/friends from Australia and enjoying the Australian summer having just come from much colder Denmark. So they are in Sydney at the moment?

I think that's a safe bet. Bondi Beach is AFAIK at Sydney.

In the video of Queen Margrethe II lighting the four Advent candles, there was a picture of the dog resting comfortably on the couch. What is his/her name?

That little diva is Tilia, Prince Henrik's old dog, and AFAIK QMII's only dog right now. Her previous dachshund, Helike, was ill and died in 2018.

For QMII's jubilee celebrations in January, the Danish PM told a wonderful story about how, during her first meeting with QMII as a PM, Tilia had placed herself in the PM's chair in QMII's office. That resulted in a long discussion between QMII and Tilia about whose place she was in – the PM's or Tilia's – a discussion QMII ended winning in the end :D

Today 20 December:

"Here in this lovely Christmas season and throughout the winter, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog is at Naval Base Frederikshavn, where, in keeping with tradition, every part of the ship is being checked through and made ready for next year’s sailing season.

The Royal Yacht is an independent command under the control of The Queen’s “jagtkaptajn”, who is the ship’s commanding officer and ultimately responsible for its crew training, fitting out and seaworthiness. In the winter period, the jagtkaptajn and the orderly study charts of sections of waters of places the Royal Yacht will visit in the upcoming sailing season.

The title “jagtkaptajn” comes from the Dutch word “jacht”, which was the designation for a small pleasure-sailing vessel The King used in the 1600s, on which the captain was a naval officer. Over time, the captain was given the designation “jagtkaptajn”, and the title therefore has nothing to do with going hunting, as you might otherwise be tempted to believe. "

To that I can add that "jagt" = a hunt or a chase, is pronounced exactly like yacht.
The captain of Dannebrog is the Monarch's personal captain. He also doubles as adjutant as you tell from his cord at his right shoulder. (An ordinary adjutant, say to a general, wear the cord at his left shoulder. Some of you may have noticed that Joachim wear a cord at his left shoulder when he is in uniform in France. Because he is a military attache, not adjutant.)
Dannebrog being ship number one in the Danish navy is also the finest command a captain can have and usually the last command a captain will have - as the crowning glory of his career.
All other navy ships are obliged to salute Dannebrog, should they meet at see or indeed when passing in or out of a harbor where she is moored, when she is on duty so to speak.

Not entirely sure, but I do believe Dannebrog is also saluted by naval batteries, that means the Battery Sixtus in Copenhagen harbor and Kronborg Castle. It should be nine shots. Because the Danish ID signal used to be three shots by ships cannons, but for the Majesty it's 3X3 shots = nine shots.

In Sweden, if a similar thing still applies there, it will be four shots. - Also if Dannebrog should happen to pass by or enter a harbour.
In that case and if I'm correct, the escorting Danish warship (if there is one) will fire three shots as an ID = We are Danish navy ships.
The Swedish battery will answer with four shots = You are free to enter this Swedish port.

Today 21 December:

"An underlay stitch and an overstitch, and suddenly you have a Christmas heart!

Before the fireplace in Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg, HM The Queen carefully crafts a special Christmas heart, which Her Majesty designed in 2007 for HRH Prince Christian’s package calendar. Together with 23 other small Christmas motifs, The Queen embroidered pockets for a calendar in which the parents could place packages so that the waiting time until Christmas would feel a little shorter for the Prince.

When The Queen got more grandchildren in the years that followed, Her Majesty also embroidered a package calendar for each of them – but always with new designs so that the calendar suited the individual child.

In connection with the 90th anniversary of the association Haandarbejdets Fremme in 2018, The Queen’s Christmas calendar pattern was published so that, ever since, everyone has had the opportunity to embroider according to Her Majesty’s design. As something very special, The Queen’s Christmas heart design can be downloaded here from The Royal House of Denmark’s website until Christmas. So, perhaps there are others who will carefully craft a Christmas heart in the coming days?

Download Her Majesty's pattern by clicking HERE."

Now I spot Christian. Looks like a windy day at the beach but it looks the family enjoyed themselves with friends.

During the shopping trip she clearly noticed that she was being photographed and she didn't look pleased. It doesn't look like she noticed that her time and the beach was also completely documented (or accepted it as a fact and decided to ignore it).

I can well understand her.

Okay, fair enough that a few snaps are taken when they are out and about on public streets, but if they can't go anywhere without photographers around, it must be getting a little annoying.

Does anyone know where they live in Sydney? Hotel or privately?

Leave it up to the Daily Mail (Fail) to stalk them all over Australia.

I think they might not even mind that much if it was regular people taking photos with their cell phones because, well, they are out walking down a public street. But to have the paps stalk your every move for their trash tabloid?

I mean Mary can't even jump off a cliff into the ocean without it being reported on like she's competing at the Olympics.

We were on at the beach at the same time with family and we didn't even notice it was Mary and co until we were going home. They were abit away from us and just look like normal family and friends. It didn't seem like anyone bothered them. Shame about the photos been taken, I think they deserve a nice holiday without that. Hopefully they enjoy the rest of the holiday, they will probably move on to Tasmania for Christmas.

Today 22 December:

"Washing and polishing takes place in The Royal House of Denmark’s garage, where the garage superintendent gives the royal vehicles a service check and makes sure they look nice in the run-up to Christmas and the New Year.

The Royal House of Denmark has a vehicle fleet that consists of seven electric and hybrid cars, a small number of limousines, passenger cars, minibuses and vans as well as a horse transporter and a small lorry.

The Royal House of Denmark’s oldest car is a Rolls-Royce, also known as Big Crown, which was built in 1958 and acquired by Frederik IX for official use.

The newest automobiles in The Royal House of Denmark are two electric cars, more precisely two Audi Q4s, while the newest means of transport for service is a cargo bike, which – just like the other means of transport – has its own crown license plate made."

Photos still coming iceflower …The Mercury, Hobart’s local newspaper, has photos of Mary getting off her flight and with her sister Jane.

I'm a bit confused. Didn't the rest of the family go to Hobart too? Or do they have to travel separately for safety reasons?

:previous: I assume that they will join her in Tasmania before Christmas day. From the pictures posted, the Crown Prince Family are with other people, so maybe they are staying back with those or other friends to do other things in Sydney or another location.

I think they are also allowing Mary a chance to join her family and catch up with gossip and just talk and be with her family. - Without having children with attentive ears around...
In modern terms: An alone-time for Mary.

Something all parents should enjoy from time to time. ;)

In the meantime Frederik can have some quality time exploring Sydney and surroundings with the kids, especially the younger ones.
Since the press is mostly focused on Mary, maybe they will go almost unnoticed.

I don’t understand why they can’t just get a few good pictures and call it a day. I understand they’re public figures and it’s not realistic for them to never be photographed even during private time… but, for example, do we really need 40 or 50 pictures of what seems to be Mary’s entire non-eventful day at the beach? When I started reading the DM article I was expecting five or six.

I really don’t think it’s the public that’s demanding this level of documentation - I don’t think they’d get fewer clicks if they did just publish five or six pictures. So why bother?

That is why a number of other RFs organise a press photo op at start or end of a holiday so the press get their moment.

Fifty years old, four kids and she still look like in her 30s and having the family enjoy exercise and the beach despite the cameras not giving her a moment alone outside. So glad to see she is still in touch with her friend Amber Petty. I recall 16 plus years ago at the old RF Amber was part of the daily news on the romance between Mary and Frederick and became herself the target of the paparazzi by association.

"Merry Christmas from “Down Under” – where we celebrate Christmas at Tasmania.

Here, there are neither frosty temperatures nor merely trees, but sunshine and summer.

What a nice surprise and lovely photo, thanks eya.

It looks like they may be in Jane’s front garden in West Hobart with that background.

And today Christmas Eve:

"It is Christmas Eve.

Each family has its own traditions for this special day – and, and to conclude The Royal House of Denmark’s Christmas calendar “Christmas at The Royal House”, HM The Queen tells here about the Christmas Eve traditions in the royal family.

Merry Christmas."

"HM The Queen:

“From Christmas 1947, when my father, as you may remember, had become king, my parents decided that we should celebrate Christmas Eve over in Trend, and there it thus was the rest of our childhood, until I was married. Our grandmother was with us until Christmas, and she enjoyed it to that extent. Her birthday was 24 December and, of course, she had never really been allowed to have her birthday to herself, but father made a big point of it that, until we had to go to church, it was grandmother’s birthday. So, she was fêted early in the forenoon with birthday cake and gifts and candles lit in the drawing room. After I began to celebrate Christmas at Marselisborg Palace, and that has been many years ago by now, I still like it just as much, because it is also a lovely place to celebrate Christmas.

We have really built up Christmas traditions – we go to church, we eat Christmas dinner, we go to the Christmas tree and open Christmas presents. We sing a little, but we don’t dance around the Christmas tree. The funny thing is that neither in my father’s family nor in my mother’s family was there a tradition of dancing around the Christmas tree, so I have never really been involved in that. Then, there is Christmas dinner, of course, and we are quite traditional with that. That is to say, it’s a blend of Danish tradition, a little from my husband, but also from my mother. We begin with rice pudding, and there is one almond – no matter whether there are many or not so many present – and thus I have provided for one almond gift, which can be entertaining for both adults or children. Then, we have roasted goose – not always in the typical Danish manner, but always roasted goose.

Then, we finish with my mother’s tradition, which was English plum pudding, which is a very substantial cake with lots of spices, and then, finally, it has to burn – you pour a little hot cognac on, then you light it, and then it’s standing ready with blue flames. I have to say that I don’t really think it has been Christmas Eve if we haven’t had plum pudding, so we have had that every time. And, not least, my Australian-born daughter-in-law thinks it’s great when she is there, because she then gets plum pudding. This year, it’s going to be a bit exciting because I myself have to celebrate Christmas somewhere other than at my own place. My sister, Princess Benedikte, and I are invited to celebrate Christmas Eve with some good friends in Jutland, and we are very much looking forward to that.”

What a Christmas journey, lovely and informative , was this year!!! And I'm already looking forward to the next one! Merry Christmas to all!!
