Danish New Year Courts: 2004, 2006-2021, 2023, 2024

Todays New Year Court at Christiansborg :)

Both Margrethe and Mary in blue gowns, and Henrik and Frederik in uniforms.

And just like last year, both Margrethe and Henrik were sitting down throughout the 45-minutes long Court, while Frederik and Mary received the 124 guests standing.

My memory is failing. Some years ago Mary worn a similar blue gown, also retro-beginning of the 20 cent. style. Is that the same?

She wore the same one in 2012
I found this pic of her past dresses for this event

I love Mary's brooch, it looks great on her, although it doesn't really match the dress, IMO.
Probably she will wear something she has worn before tomorrow.

I suppose she's taking after her mother-in-law, who's worn the blue brocade number for years. Before that, it was a yellow brocade levee dress, originally a full skirted gala gown.
It's used as a uniform for the NY levees, IMO a clever decision! Leeves are about representation and protocol rather than showing off your latest designer dress.
HM probably has a good reason for wearing discreet boots, thankfully they're not UGGs :D ..... yet!

It should be a court dress, thus, yes, it's some kind of uniform

She has something in the belt level. I think she wears it.

The star at her belt is the Star for the Order of the Elephant.

Well yes, it's sort of the Queen's 'court dress' :)! As our first female monark I suppose that she decided on a uniform-like garment for the New Year Levees. The previous monarks had worn their finest military uniforms at these event and didn't have to worry about what to wear. Otherwise the current understanding of 'Court dress' in the Danish context is the 'uniform' worn by the Ladies-in-waiting. The ladies in red can be seen in a photo posted by Muhler (#1142). HM copied the idea from the Swedish court, where they have been worn for ..I don't know how long! They are usually worn at very formal occasions like the New Year levees.

No risk of cold feet there.
I noticed in one of the captions that the Regent Couple indeed were sitting down during the 45 minuttes of handshaking due to the Queen's poor back.

Good sensible shoes I say. Now, Muhler, is the Chamberlain at the couples' right not the man who used to be Prime Minister of Denmark and who became secretary general of Nato?

Anders Fogh? No, he is still secretary general. IIRC this gentleman's name is Ove Ullerup.

Aha, thank you although am I right that there is at least a resemblance? I really thought I recognized Anders Fogh (thanks for the name!):flowers:

Well. They both have black hair and are slim. But the general secretary has a silly wife... that I guess will be the most sure way of telling them apart. The wife, Annemette Fogh, has a habit of voicing her opinion about everything including subjects she doesnt know anything about... That is when she doesn't spontanously start to dance. Shes pretty much akin to madame Castafiore from Tintin in that respect. I believe my fellow Danes can confirm my description.- Life would be so much less entertaining without such beings around, eh?

Gallery from B.T. with text : The Queen in boots - Mary with new hairdo

The Queen was again jumped into the big boots when she, after the tour in the golden coach, arrived with the Prince Consort for Tuesday's banquet at Christiansborg.

We are otherwise used to seeing Her Majesty in nice colorful robes when she participates or is hosting various events. The only common feature of the Queen's clothing usually is a pair of polished shoes with a small heel. But the Queen chooses apparently these days more sensible footwear.

After Mary has giving a couple of recycling dresses from her wardrobe a tour in the flash light at the first two New Year Courts Mary today arrived in a new long skirt in rich silk with monochrome details of the tow added with a black blouse with peplum and three-quarter length sleeves. Around her neck and right wrist Mary was wearing jewelry with beads. The Crown Princess's hair was put in a loose hairdo and as the icing on the cake had Mary again painted her nails with a feminine, bright red lacquer.

Question our Danish posters.

What are the branches of the military represented at the New Year Courts?

For instance, the soldiers Frederik and Mary are passing red, blue with the large black hats are called what?

Officers from the three branches of the regular military, army, navy and airforce. As far as I know the Homeguard and Civil Defence are not represented.

M&F are in your picture passing an honor guard from the the Royal Lifeguard Regiment, here wearing the red gala uniform.

Mary and Frederik once again look great.
Crown Princess Mary Of Denmark And Crown Prince

I read that the skirt Mary is wearing is from the dress she wore to Charles 60th birthday.

I love the carriage ride of the queen with all the horses and uniforms :flowers:

Love the smiles

QMII and PC Henrik in the foreground, still fresh, but sitting down - the Queen in fur coat, sitting in this impressive chair - looks every inch a Queen. Behind them are the Crown Prince Couple - standing - and still "allowed" to smile and chit chat with each other while the Queen and the PC is in the front - they are learning and are ready for when it will be their turn :)

Thanks for the many delightful pictures. :flowers:

Now, let's talk horses. Not that I personally know much about these fourlegged critters, so if anyone has more to add, please do.:)

http://a.bimg.dk/node-images/82/7/1152x-u/7082216-dronningens-karettur.jpg
Let's start with this one. There are two mounted squadrons in the Guards Hussars Regiment. With some 40 sabres in each squadron. (Lances if it's lancers/uhlans, swords if it's cuirassiers).
Hussars are light cavalry, so the troopers were small men riding fast and nimble horses. Horses that were able to outmanouvre the heavier dragoons and lancers, not to mention the even heavier heavy dragoons and cuirassiers. Sometimes hussars rode mares, but otherwise cavalry horses were always stallions because they were bigger and more aggressive.
This being cavalry the trooper in the centre of the picture is not carrying a colour like in an infantry regiment but a guidon/estandart.

As you can tell the ordinary troppers and officers here ride dark horses, while the trompeters (buglars were used by the US cavalry) nearest in the picture ride light horses. The reason is simple: so that the officer could locate his signalman quickly in the confusion of battle.

It's no secret that the cavalry horses learn the trompeters signals faster and better than recruits (they've got bigger heads), which meant and still means that the horses react faster and more correctly than their silly riders.

The carriadge or whatever the correct words is, from 1840. It's not heated, so the Regent Couple were lucky we don't have any of the American cold!
It's drawn by white Kladraubers. White horses were rare and a sign of prestige beforehand. Apart from that this breed of horses are eminently suited because they are so very calm.

The most peculiar battle I think ever to take place in DK, took place in the early 1800's during the Napoleonic Wars. Where DK became a staunch allied of Napoleon and as such Spanish troops were deployed to DK. The tides of war changed and Spain became occupied by France and as such the Spanish troops weren't that pleased with their deployment. (It was bloody cold up here too)! At some point parts of a heavy Spanish cavalry regiment was evacuated out from DK onboard British ships but the horses had to be left on the beach.
It so happened that there were a number of mares behind an enclosure on a grasing nearby. That attracted the interest of the Spanish stallions! In fact they ended up fighting among themselves. But these were not civillian horses, but trained cavalry horses, so they lined up in lines of battle, by the squadrons, with the officers-horses in the lead and then they charged each other, kicking and biting.
Retreating, reforming and attacking again.
That went on for quite some time leaving a significant number of dead and wounded horses lying on the beach.
All this happened near the town of Nyborg on the island of Funen on 11th August 1808. The British admiral R.G. Keats left an account of this weird event.

ADDED: It wasn't just horses the Spaniards left behind here in DK.
This is a very sweet story from the village of Magleby on the charming island of Langeland.
Here in a parson's farm the wife of the priest found her kitchenmaid in tears. She was to have a child with one of the Spaniards billetted on the farm. The wife tried to console her maid, these things happen after all. - But the maid didn't cry because she was having a baby, she cired because she couldn't speak Spanish, so how was she later on to be able to understand what her child was saying?

H.C. Andersen, who must have been six-eight years at the time also encountered the exotic Spanish troops: "One day a Spanish soldier took me up on his arm and pressed my lips against a sliver-image he wore at his chest. I remember that made my mother very angry, because that was very Catholic, she said. But I liked the picture and the strange man who danced around with me, kissed me and cried. I think he had children of his own at home in Spain".

Re. my post 1130 about Queen Magrethes green gala dress:
It's made by Birgitte Thaulov (and not Birgitt Hallsteind, as stated).
Just in case it matters to someone ...:).

Thanks Polyesco.

Notice their elephants. They are quite different.

I've found an illustrated list of no less than 23 different elephants, one belonging to the Swedish Monarch. ICollectAll.com - Orders and medals > Denmark - Elephant Badge

The stars are different too. Here are 29 different stars: ICollectAll.com - Orders and medals > Denmark - Elephant - Star

I did a brief research, apparantly there are currently 72 Orders of the Elephants in circulation, and a small number in museums and other cllections all over the world. The total number is estimated around 100.
