State Visit from Belgium to Denmark: March 28-30, 2017

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It's pretty - but not as pretty as that Borgen actress yesterday :)

I thought Mary's daytime outfit looked a little odd today. Especially with the scarf, and so many purple items that don't really match. Unlike picture perfect Mary. So I was thinking... Since the scarf looks very "DVF" to me and this being one of Mathilde's go to brands... Could it have been a gift from Mathilde to Mary - who decided to wear it immediately and combined it with other items of the same colour?

Just a speculation of course.
Do you have a picture?;)

.

Mary and Frederik forgot to curtsy and bow to the Queen and King. Maybe they're more relaxed when Queen Margrethe is not there....

I think Queen Mathilde looked amazing! CP Mary's dress needed some being, perhaps a bejeweled belt would've completed the look. I cannot get on board with the cut out areas of the dress.

How delightful to see an elegant Princess Elisabeth. Any info on that necklace she wears?

Im guessing it because they have already spent all day together, Frederik and Mary were with them for their 6 events today :flowers:

Yesterday Philippe and Mathilde had a little chat with the Belgian press.
Godmother Mathilde has seen Isabella and brought a present along for her.
She also revealed that Isabella has visited her in Belgium, saying to the journalists: You don't know everything!

The same happened during the Dutch State Visit, but also then they did spend several events with the guests during the State Visit. At the airport the crown princely couple made a bow resp. made a curtsy and for the rest they did not.

Imagine:
Airport - down the knees
Palace - down the knees
Visit Parliament - down the knees
Visit City Hall - down the knees
Visit conference or symposium - down the knees
State Banquet - down the knees

Pfff....

They spent the whole day together from 9 in the morning. I assume that there would be a curtsy when meeting in the morning and then none after that ?

My understanding is that the curtsy is for the first meeting of the day and is not necessary after that. I think that is the protocol which applies to the British Royal Family in any event, so perhaps it is the same for others, too.

What a lovely news, that Isabella was in Belgium! I thought, it is only a gesture by royals to make eachother godparents and there is nothing behind, maybe only some postcards on birthday or so... Very nice! :flowers:

What a lovely story, Isabella visited them in Belgium ,then it must have been family trip! Good to know that they have this close and lovely relationship [emoji8], which we can not find out,and which is really good !

that's beautiful news. A little gift for the goddaughter and that the family has visited in Belgium. :flowers:

what a fun tradition for guests to the danish palace to sign the glass windows! i had never heard about it. how many panels are signed to this date? are there pictures of the window with all the signatures? i find it a great idea - almost like a hollywood walk of fame, except for royalty and statesmen and on the windows rather than the floor! :)

I noticed Frederik didn't actually bow either to Willem-Alexander or to Philippe.

Willem-Alexander/Máxima and Philippe/Mathilde used to be Frederik and Mary's peers not so long ago and now they outrank them by virtue of the parents of the Dutch and Belgian royal couples having abdicated, which Queen Margrethe is adamant she will never do in Denmark. Mary doesn't seem to bother curtsying to queens who are her age and her "girlfriends" so to speak, but I can't help imagining it must be a little bit uncomfortable for her.

I must say Philippe and Mathilde have odd signatures though.

Rubbish. Crown Princess Mary did curtsy to both Queen Maxima and Queen Mathilde at the airport. And it didn't look the least bit uncomfortable.
But, having read many of your posts about Mary, it doesn't surprise me a bit that you would post something like that. ;)

Surely carving your signature in glass would require a little effort and be a bit more tricky than usual writing?

Here are some extra photos from tonights State Banquet at the Christiansborg Palace.

I am shocked to say that this time I prefer the dress from Q. Margarethe over the dress from Q. Mathilde.
I would have never ever expected such a day to come - although both ladies looked nice.
Maybe it is just my preference of aqua over orange...

One other thing I have read in this thread - somebody commented on how frail the queen seemed to be at one point when walking. I also noticed listening to the speech that she sometimes slightly stumbled over the words - which is very unusal for Margarete .... anybody has more information?

Here is the video of Mary's curtsy to Mathilde (around 0:48)

and since the subject came up.. Frederik and Haakon giving a bow to Queen Mathilde, and Mary curtsying at the Swedish wedding

It was a great visit between the two royal families. the warm relationships were lovely to see. And Im sure Isabella enjoyed the gift from her godmother (maybe an early birthday gift)

i think you are misunderstanding what Mbruno said. he posted that 'mary does not seem to bother curtsying', meaning she does curtsy with no problems.

as it is usually the case, hell unleashes as soon as a mild indication of someone criticizing mary comes up (even when it was not at all what was meant initially in the post by Mbruno).

I noticed Frederik didn't actually bow either to Willem-Alexander or to Philippe.

I didn't see the video with W-A, but it appears to me that Frederik performed a neck bow to Phillipe which is typical to many royals. However Joachim seems to start his bow at the waist.

QMII often stumble over her own words - at least when the show is on. - Perhaps it's shyness? She used to be shy and very insecure.
I think she's simply getting older. But she sure has begun to walk unsteadily within the past year or so.

According to the DRF website, the custom started back i 1841 and from 1916 239 window panes with signatures have been registered.
The oldest signature is from 1841 and that is the signature of Louise of Hessen.

This signature is assumed to be of Harry - the future King of Norway: https://kejserensvilla.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/dsc08871.jpg

This is Georgie, the future King George of Britain: https://kejserensvilla.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/dsc08873.jpg

But it's not only the windows. The door frames have royal graffiti.
QMII spoke vividly about it in the documentary about the royal palaces.

In the documentary A Royal Family, Queen Margrethe said that in the past the guests would etch their names with a diamond.

:previous: Thanks, Iceflower :flowers:

Billed Bladets deadline is Tuesday noon, so they really don't have that much about the Belgian visit. That'll have to wait for next week.
The articles this week is basically background info and captions to the photos. - Very little for hardcore followers.

So here are the scans: BB #13, 2017

I was watching the video of Queen Margrethe's speech at the state dinner, which I had not seen before, and I had the impression at the end that the Brabançonne (i.e. the Belgian national anthem) was slightly off. What do the Belgian posters think ?

Actually "Harry" was a nickname for the future Queen Maud of Norway :flowers:

Thanks, Betina. Didn't know that.

The two examples I posted are from the orangerie. Some of the signatures at Fredensborg are more or less guesswork and it is not known when they were made.
After all it took some 60 years before someone even began to register the signatures - let alone figure out who made them.
