Today Philippe & Mathilde spent the (freezing cold) day visiting the Belgian province Hainaut.

In the morning they were at a workmeeting in Colfontaine, greeted the public and visited the town.

They had lunch at the Lycée Provincial E.T.H. in St Ghislain.

In the afternoon they went to CETE (Carrefour Economie Technologie Enseignement) Mini Usines in Mons, where they met with students and aprentices.

Mathilde's speech at the Women's Award (in Dutch and English)

09/03/2005
Prinses Mathilde

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This evening we celebrate the creativity and accomplishments of outstanding entrepreneurs from Tanzania, one of the poorest countries in the world.

These entrepreneurs operate in a low-income economic environment. Poverty is widespread and concentrated in the country’s rural areas. The poor, especially the women, work hard. They do not want charity but they do want to be sustained in their own economic activities that will generate increased earnings. Micro-entrepreneurs are one of the most energetic groups in the developing world.

Tanzania had the foresight to realise that the micro-finance sector has to be an integral part of the country’s financial sector. In order to achieve this, the Government took the important step of developing a National Micro-finance Policy. This provided hope that micro-finance will indeed achieve its potential in a country that desperately needs this powerful poverty-alleviation tool.

It is most fitting that during the International Year of Microcredit, we bestow this “Womed Award” on a Tanzanian woman entrepreneur. The winner not only embodies the determination of those who struggle in poverty, but symbolizes the great potential for success in women’s entrepreneurial activities.

Let the nominees of the South we are celebrating this evening be an example for us all.

Thank you
Ik dank u voor uw aandacht.

I adore the contrast in Mathilde's outfit - the black top and white skirt looks very elegant. The detail on the skirt is a delicate touch. Well Done Mathilde!

What lovely photos. The crown princess has a wonderful sense of style which I think it often overlooked.

And, her speech was very well written.

More pictures from the Womed Award, these are from Colourpress.

I must say that this award seems like a really great one in many aspects, and I'm glad that Mathilde supports it with her committment.
