christmas in another country

i've heard in france they don't make a big deal about christmas. is that so in monaco? of course they make a big (commercial) deal about christmas in america. some famillies who are very religious don't make such a big deal about it because they consider it commercializing a religious holiday.

The biggest difference in America and France is Santa Claus, Coca Cola has made Santa into the main Christmas icon where as in France it is still a religious holiday.... Monaco is a mixture between France and America due Princess Grace and the Grimaldi's connections with America

xmas is really not a big deal here. there is the big lunch with the family on the 25th (which is also the only day the shops are closed) and that's it. only in the churches you have midnight mass on the 24th. The anglican and protestant church offer a larger varity of services, but that is new this year too. BTW there is one spot in MC where you will not find a single xmas decoration: behind the Casino. You wouldn't even know it's almost xmas.

I inspected the lights at the Casino with the kids yesterday and we all agreed that nothing tops a xmas tree. Those avantgarde things like circus tent and hanging red and white stars (palace court) might make a change, but a children (and I suppose I have to count myself among them) get much more excited about the traditional stuff. To them santa, a sleigh and a tree are xmas and a tent with a star on top is not a good substitute. IMO and that of my kids.

I happened to watch some TV pictures about that event on the state-run channel RAI1. The reporter said they were the only TV allowed to shoot.
It was nice to see the three siblings distributing gifts to the children.
I heard Caro's voice as well. She really knows how to deal with kids: weren't she a princess she would have surely make an excellent teacher IMO.:)

I guess Rai has it wrong tere , because there is almost at every occasion a local TV team there as well. There is a cable channel that you can only watch if you live in Monaco. They report about almost everything and especially big events like the childrens xmas party. They might have been the only foreign team to have been permitted to film. And maybe other stations were just not as interested (we have a large community of Italians living and working here, so there is more interest from that part of the media anyways).

As far as I remember they have been doing this already the last few years, except that there was less press around. I think the new press lady makes sure that they have a lot of good images circulating in the papers this year. In past years the palace did not have good relations with the press office (if you can call not having any relations that). With the recent nomination of Mme Stahl, the press office is highly involved in this and makes sure that not only local journalists/photographers are present. I heard that people in the press office are very happy that they can now do their job and make MC and the Prince shine. so I suppose we will get to see many more of these pics in the future. Good for us

thanks for the explanation, paca!
i guess for me, their presence become very significant after prince rainier passed away, especially after the enthronement. we can see them almost every week, and doing event together. it's a good thing.. and it became more visible for us. so, the press office & the palace most certainly did great job in pr, and i'm glad for that. :) :)
ps. i just hope, every now and then, stephanie would stop wear that kind of pants, blouse, and jacket like that. what she wore during the enthronement week or the icy-blue one is great... oh well...
