Monaco mournfully prepares for a new era
John Lichfield
March 29 2005 at 09:20AM Europe's oldest and longest-reigning head of state remained gravely ill: so ill that his faithful subjects (all 6 000 of them) were preparing inwardly - and nervously - for a new era.

His Most Serene Highness Prince Rainier has been the most absolute of monarchs for 56 years.

He has not only ruled Monaco, but also transformed it from a sleepy resort for idle aristocrats to a booming tax haven for the energetic nouveau riche.

Can his little postcard realm survive his passing?

Albert has never marrying has provoked rumours that he is gayWhat should the 6 000 Monegasques and 26 000 resident foreigners expect from his son and heir, so long kept at arm's length from the family business?

Prince Albert, 47, is a likeable man with the looks of a reliable family accountant, but he has none of his father's toughness and charisma and, to the consternation of his father and future subjects, no wife.

Prince Rainier, 81, has been in a "grave condition" in the intensive care unit of the tiny principality's specialist heart and lung unit since last Tuesday.

He is suffering from kidney and heart failure, brought on by a severe pulmonary infection.

His doctors have warned that he may not recover.

Since 1949, Rainier Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi, sovereign prince of Monaco and Duc de Valentinois, has been not only monarch of his square-mile realm on the French Riviera but also the de facto prime minister, chief executive and town mayor.

Until his most recent series of illnesses, Rainier made the final decision on everything: from the colour of the park-keepers' uniforms to the type of motorcycles ordered for the country's police force.

Rainier inherited from his grandfather a seedy seaside town, mostly known for its casino. Over half a century later, Monaco is 20 percent larger thanks to costly reclamation of land from the sea, and enormously wealthier.

The principality is home to most racing divers and tennis players. It is also the principal residence of, among others, Ringo Starr, Shirley Bassey and a lot of Russians who would prefer not to give their names.

If you are a rich resident, almost anything goes. For everyone else, there is an atmosphere of conformist authoritarianism (no picnics in the parks, no singing in the street). Monaco has been described as "East Germany with Rolls-Royces".

Of the 32 000 or so residents, only the 6 000 Monegasque citizens have the right to vote for a parliament, which has a little more influence than it used to have, ie not very much.

The mystique of the principality - the second smallest country in the world and the second most densely populated - was greatly enhanced by Rainier's marriage to American actress Grace Kelly in 1956.

The glitzy image has been increased, and tarnished, by the amorous exploits of their daughters, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie.

In recent years, Rainier's principality has been criticised for its lax banking laws. Monaco is on the OECD list of "unco-operative" tax havens, suspected of allowing the laundering of embezzled or criminally generated money from all over the world.

Prince Albert is said by friends to be embarrassed by this status and determined to clean up the micro-country's image when he comes to power.

He is also said to be more willing than his father to allow an element of genuine democracy.

Whether the "Monegasque miracle" can survive democracy and openness remains unclear.

Father and son are frequently said to have a strained relationship. Prince Albert stutters in French, his father's language, and speaks freely in English, his mother's.

According to French psychologists, this is a sign that Albert has always felt intimidated by his father.

And the fact that Albert has never married has provoked rumours that he is gay. His friends say he is, in fact, energetically heterosexual.

He has had many girlfriends, but none of them could bear the idea of living in the media fishbowl of Monaco.

The principality's constitution was changed three years ago to allow for the possibility that Albert will never produce an heir.

The succession would then pass to his sisters and his aunt and their children and grandchildren.

This leaves open the possibility that a future monarch of Monaco (currently 12th in line) will be called Prince Keith.
i agree with articles!

let him rest and let him dies i think he cant getting better because he cant get recover soon! i would damn knew it!

Rage and protest towards Guy Carlier and 'On ne peut pas plaire a tout le monde' in order to defend Monaco's princely family

Saveral supporter clubs of the AS Monaco football club and other people have opened threats in their forums to express their rage and protest agaisnt the statements and behaviour that Mr. Carlier showed during the tv show' On ne peut pas plaire a tout le monde'. In the show Mr. Carlier made fun of Monaco's princly family, especially of Princess Stephanie by showing a picture of her and making fun of her physical appearance and comportement in public. Then he said with regard to Prince Rainier's condition: ' It's sad that's true but people are not really overwhelmed by any romantic emotion'
This wasn't the first time that Mr. Carlier expressed his dislike of the monegaque family in his position as entertainer and host on tv shows. The first time in 1982 after Princess Grace died he said: " The death of some princess of some glamour operette principality won't stop the world from turning."

This is a matter of great disrespect. You cannot make fun of whoever you like in whatever situation just in order to make some dumb people laugh.

It is furthermore very nice to see how people and especially the fans and supporters of the AS Monaco FC stand up for their princely family and defend them.

All righty now the press is to much. Who in the Forum has watched The World Music Awards when Albert isn't reading from a monitor? He stuttered during the Larry King Live Interview. Watch the video I posted in his thread where he speaks for several minutes in French. He is an excellant speaker when reading. You will see what the press says isn't always fact.

I agree. My brother stutters, and he stutters in English and Hebrew. His stuttering is not caused by being intimidated by our parents or any other psychological "condition." Some people just stutter. It is silly to look for something more.

Thank you Irishchic. Its got to do with the brain and the thought process and how they all communicate with the vocal or speech process like when a person has a stroke. Albert might just surprise people.

Well this has not been specified. Sources of the palace anounced yesterday: 'If the monegasques think that their souverain will recover then we have to say that this is unfortunatly not part of reality.'

What a truly despicable individual this Guy Carlier is! He seems like a needless vicious person.

Has Prince Albert taken over the Regency permanently or just until (if) Prince Ranier recovers?
