What kind of trip is it? I am almost positive since he's on sled dogs that its not buisness more likely pleasure? How long will it be?
If its an extended period of time I would think its rather tedious and unnecessary. He is reigning prince and I'm sure there are more pressing matters but on the other hand if its for a short while, a vacation why not. If its buisness then certainly so. I'm sure he'll be well protected if that's what you mean, he's not a fool. Emergency precautions are probably in place. If something does happen I'm sure he'll be within a helicoptors & ambulance's reach. Heaven forbid something horrible does happen to him when he's gone I'm sure it would be a great loss but the sucssesion laws are in place....
If this is a extended vacation this seems silly to me, millions of people in the world are struggling to make ends meet some don't even have water to survive and this prince is going on a sled ride to the North Pole kind of puts things in percpective.

H.S.H. PRINCE ALBERT II IN SPITZBERG, IN THE TRACKS OF HIS GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER PRINCE ALBERT I OF MONACO
1906 – 2006 : the adventure continues
At the beginning of the 20th century, Prince Albert I, pioneer of oceanography and forerunner in the field of environmental protection, explored the unknown regions of Spitzberg.
In difficult climatic conditions, the Prince and scientists on board his ship made an inventory of marine life and took meteorological and photographic readings in order to study the movements of the ice floe and glaciers.
From 25 to 31 July 2005, H.S.H. Prince Albert II visited the same places as his illustrious ancestor during his campaigns, in particular the glaciers «Lillihöök» and «Monaco».

S.A.S. le Prince Albert II devant le Glacier "Lillyhöök"
Through photographs from the period, Prince Albert II was able to see for himself the consequences of global warming, the front of the Lillihöök glacier has receded by six kilometres, specialists estimate that almost 40 % of its volume has melted in one century
During this expedition, His Most Serene Highness invited a team of scientists specialised in the pole to accompany him, composed of Mrs Samantha Smith, who directs the WWF «Arctic Programme», Mr Roberto Cassi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (Marine Environment Laboratory) and Professor Jean Jaubert of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
The main scientific objectives of this expedition were :
* To study the accumulation of pollutants exported by industrialised countries in certain marine organisms, representative of the food chain, in order to better evaluate the threat that this pollution poses for arctic ecosystems and populations;
* To measure tracers imprisoned in the growth rings of the shells of certain molluscs with a very long lifespan, to reconstruct the exact evolution of the climate over the last two centuries.
The plankton organisms were captured in nets whereas animals living at the bottom were collected by divers who ventured into the icy waters adjoining the ice floe.
During this trip, Prince Albert II and the members of his expedition were able to observe a varied fauna including polar bears, walruses, seals, as well as numerous birds, such as guillemots of Troil and Brunnich, monk puffins and little auks.
They travelled more than 670 nautical miles (about 1,200 kilometres) around the archipelago; the latitude of 80° north and 36' minutes was reached.
H.S.H. Prince Albert II would like to return to this region of the world.
From 10 to 19 April 2006, he will attempt to reach the North Pole with huskies, from the Russian base of Borneo about a hundred kilometres away.
A press conference, in the presence of His Most Serene Highness as well as members of the future expedition, will take place at the Oceanographic Museum on 28 November 2005 at which further details will be given.

He has also gone dog sledding on holiday.

In my opinion (I've thought this for a while), I think PA is going to have to grow into the role of serious government. I like him, but he seems to want to party more than sit down and deal with all the many daily adminsitrative issues that come with the job of being a Reigning Prince. :p
Not that he cannot do it, or has not had plenty of practice, but it's different now because it's his own job to do rather than just to fill in for someone else...
I don't blame him though, who wants to administer things all day when there's a nice sled out there waiting...:)

Albert is into Global warning and the effects on our planet and visiting the polar ice cap is a way to see more of those changes due to the melting of the surface ice. Who saw the movie Water World? If our polar ice caps melt it could be like that. We have already gone though the ice age. Now we are headed towards the heat to cause the melting until what we burn up? I support his interests even in his position he isn't afraid to show it.
Here is a list of his studies 1977 to 1981 : His Highness attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, U.S.A., where he studied Political Science, Economics, Psychology, English Literature, Art History, Anthropology, Geology, Philosophy, Sociology, German and Music.
What is geology? Geology is the study of how the planet Earth formed and how it changes. Scientists called geologists study rocks, soils, mountains, volcanoes, rivers, oceans, and other parts of the planet. Some geologists study fossils, the marks or remains of dead organisms. The study of fossils helps scientists learn how life developed on Earth. Geologists also investigate other objects in the solar system, including Earth's moon, other planets and their ...
More of our worlds leaders need to be interested directly instead of having others do it.
Many only see his interest in sports and woman. He is single after all and can do as he likes. Go to this site to learn more about Albert the man http://www.palais.mc/wwwpal.nsf/ABDA...256BA60047D03C
He is an intelligent man. Sex will only keep a man's interests for just so long. You attack his brain by stimulating it on his level.

I don't think anyone here implied that PA is not a smart person.
And I think we know he has a college degree.
But being a reigning prince is alot more administrative than one may at first imagine -- even while he does have others to tend to the nut-bolt details -- he does have to deal with alot of adminstrative issues, probably more so than ever before. In some cases, it may involve him being more 'hands-on' in terms of deciding what needs to be done, who needs to do it, approving things and such, rather than being just someone who is appraised on the big points of 'what is going on over there'.:p
I think while he may do well in such a role, he may not actually want to have to deal with all the admin. things day in and day out -- that's maybe why the business trips/archaelogical expeditions/ect., etc...
Sure those things certainly contribute to his interests and what he says he wants to do in his country, I advise anyone to structure their work around their interests too -- if they can do it.:)
I take vacation/business trips too -- I know how it works:p

I think he'll be fine, safety wise, in the north pole I just cannot imagine why anyone would want to go to the north pole. I'm sure it's pretty and very isolated but I will take a warm climate any day....

"He is an intelligent man. Sex will only keep a man's interests for just so long. It's sort of like, you can have one but you got to have the other. No healthy man is going to stay interested in a woman just for intellect, IMO.
I do think he's trying to draw attention to global warming and other environmental issues but I do not see him as supper qualified for it. What was that picture of? What kind of ceremony?

Albert with a beard
One might change his image some but he might look a little odd since he may have more hair on his face then the top of his head. That wasn't said in a mean way either. Bald or balding men look rather odd to me with facial hair. At least he doesn't do what some men do and take hair from the side and comb it over the top to cover the bald spot. Its worse then Donald Trump or a bad rug. Guys need to get with it when they are balding and accept it as a fact of life for some. As far as Albert looking nice with a beard I like men that are clean shaven not even a mustache. I personally think he looks good as he is. I did like it when he shaved his head. He has nice legs too while I am at it but he can pass on waxing them for me.

I agree with your perspective Lady M. I too think a trip to the North Pole cannot hurt when learning about global warming.
I wonder if this was a trip long delayed because of his father's illness.

Attention... think of Sean Connery, a fine combination of balding man with a beard.
