You share the name Ethel with a number of Anglo-Saxon royals, both male and female, as Ethel (which means noble) was a part of their names and was considered a suitable name for royals.

Some royals with the name Ethel (AEthel)in their names:
King Ethelbert of Kent
Saint Ethelburg of Kent, Æthelburh of Kent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , daughter of Ethelbert
King Ethelwulf of Wessex
Ethelstan of Wessex
Ethelswith, queen of Mercia, Æthelswith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
King Ethelbald of Wessex
King Ethelberth of Wessex
King Ethelred of Wessex
Ethelflaed, lady of the Mercians, Æthelflæd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethelgifu of Wessex
Ethelweard of Wessex
King Ethelstan of England, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athelstan_of_England
King Ethelred the Unready, Æthelred the Unready - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , husband of Emma of Normandy

And there are many more with Ethel- in their name in the early Anglo-Saxon history.

I forgot Edith of Wessex, the queen of Edward the Confessor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_of_Wessex

St Ethelbert (King of Kent) was the first king of England to convert to Christianity. I have a real soft spot for him because my primary school was called St Ethelberts.

here is a link about him ... Æthelberht of Kent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sorry if I am digging up an old thread, but I only joined today:)
My name is Elizabeth Angela, the first two names of the Queen Mother. My third name was given after my maternal grand mother, but if I had been named after my other grannie, my third name would have been Marguerite and it would have been all three!

I don't share my name with any royals, but my brother is called Andrew, so he shares it with the Duke of York.

Anne, the Princess Royal and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece comes to my mind from the current royals.

From historical royals, I know some Spanish infantas:
-Ana de Austria y Austria-Estiria, queen of France.
-Maria Ana de Austria y Austria-Estiria, Empress of the German Roman Empire.
-Ana de Austria, queen of Spain (wife of Felipe II)

My name is Mariel, and I know of no royal who has had that name. My middle name of Teresa I do share with an Empress of Austria. My name Mariel came from my grandmother Mary Teresa Elliott, so I actually have a "Mary" in there. And that makes me almost Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg.

Speaking of Ethels, my aunt was Ethelwyn. I thought it was odd when she was alive many years ago (died young) but now I think it is beautiful and would actually make a great royal name. Her whole name was Margaret Ethelwyn, but she was called Ethelwyn.

I love your name- did your parents name you in honor of the Queen Mum- wonderful lady- or because they just liked the name?
Does your family have ties with the Queen Mum?
Did a member of the family work for her?

Unfortunately, no! Just family names and coincidence. No one in my family ever had any connections to the palace or royalty. They do advertise jobs on the palace website these days, and if the internet had been in existence when I was a girl, I might have been tempted to apply for one. A chambermaid or something. Can you imagine? I would have loved it!

Ah, a family name- of course- makes sense.
A girl after my own heart- getting a job for the Royals over the web would be so !

Again speaking of Ethelwyn, that would be a good name for a British royal if they wanted to hark back to their Anglo-Saxon past, before the Norman conquest, before the Hanovers, in the WAY-BACK-MACHINE. Ethel, as Meraude states, is a common part of many royals' names in the Anglo-Saxon period.
When I visited Canterbury cathedral, not far from where my English ancestors lived, I saw the plaque on which the Archbishops of Canterbury are listed--before William the Conq, many are "Ethels".
After the Norman Conquest, no more Ethels listed on the plaque; Saxons were no longer the ruling clan.

My Aunt Ethelwyn was no doubt given a Saxon name by her mother, my Scottish grandmother, who fancied the English background of my grandfather, who was born in Kent and brought to America as a baby.

The name is really beautiful and one of my all-time favourites.
