As far as Danish requirements on naming a baby there are none. There is not precident for naming a girl Margarethe. It is merely coincidence. There isn't even a tradition. Now they may choose to start one. As far as Christian and Frederick, it is a tradition and a royal decree. However royals are not required to follow it. It is not law. Mary and Fred can choose to name the child something completely different. In fact if Margarethe had followed the royal decree Frederick would actually be named Christian and this yet unborn baby would be Frederick. There was just a decrepency in the number of Freds and Christians so the current Queen evened it up. However, Mary and Fred are within their rights to name their child whatever they please. Will they follow the tradition is really the question. So the child may yet be one of those names. But there is no requirement or guarentee.

María de las Mercedes comes from one of the many titles of the Virgin Mary - "Mary of Mercies"

de Todos los Santos, I believe, means "of all the saints". Do any Spanish speaking members know if this is right?

I'm kinda hoping if it's a girl, that she will be named Victoria Eugenia after Felipe's great-grandmother although they may choose Sofia as one of the baby's names as well. Not sure about a boy's name but figure Juan Carlos is as good as any.

Since Cristina and Inaki have gone for rather traditional Spanish names for their boys I'm guessing on Carlos for a boy, and I think Isabel for a girl. Maybe. Ingrid Alexandra was named both for Mette-Marit's grandmother (whose name was Ingrid), in addition to the Queen, and for Haakon's grandfather (whose name was Alexander before he switched to Olav.)

The thing is that at least Haakon and Mette-Marit would name their children something with Norwegian connotations, and sadly, there's a lot of those names that don't sound very royal at all, despite being it.

I know...but Maud just sounds so old and plain and well, fit for a 102 year old woman...

I also agree for Felipe and Letizia.....I think Victoria Eugenia after his great-grandmother is a classic and very royal name...for a boy, name him after his grandfather.

I would assume that Princess Christina named her daughter after her aunt Princess Irene of Greece.
