Just as a sidenote: On that day in June, 1314, numerous exiled Knights of the Military Order of The Knight's Templar of Jerusalem, rode out in front of the Scots, and were said to have driven pure fear into the English army. These were member of the Order who had managed to escape the persecution of the order on the continent, and since the Papal Bull dissolving the Order wasn't read in Scotland, that's where many fled.

Hi Von Schlesian. I didn't know that the Knights Templars fought with Robert the Bruce? They may wanted to fight against their old nemesis, Philip IV of France, who sent many French knights to support his son-in-law, the King of England.

A couple of events really defeated the morale of the English. The Scots had won a pre-battle skirmish the night before and Robert the Bruce defeated and killed one of the best English knights in a tournament-style duel on the morning of battle.

The battle was an ignomious loss for Edward II. Robert the Bruce's brother Edward had been besieging the English-held castle of Stirling but his patience wasn't long. So he offered a deal to the keeper of the castle to withdraw his forces and return the next year to fight a battle on open land for the rights to the castle. Robert the Bruce was incensed, the English forces were many times greater than the Scottish forces and the English had a well trained calvary which the Scots didn't. Giving the English a whole year to prepare for a battle made the odds almost impossible for the Scots.

But the Scots managed to stage the battle in the one place that made the horses and great numbers a liability and not an asset.

Incidentally, the English had held Robert's queen and his heiress daughter as prisoners. With his queen and heiress in prison, Robert couldn't remarry and try for a son. The victory of the Battle of Bannockburn gave him enough clout to demand back his queen and his daughter. Isabella of France was the one, acting for her husband Edward II, who signed the papers to release the Scottish queen and princess.
