I wouldn't say more popular, just as some would see it as unorthodox. For instance Kronprinsesse Mary of Denmark and Princess Maxima of Holland, their actions have had more should one say attention and scrutiny because they have chosen to leave their respective homelands and live in the lands and espouse the Languages and Cultures of their respective Husbands.

Many people in general commend them for this, as it is a huge feet but one replete with rewards.:):) :)

I don't think it's necessarily true that foreign-born CP's are more popular than ones who come from the same country they're going to help reign over someday. To me, Letizia and Mathilde seem to be just as popular as Maxima and Mary. What the foreign princesses seem to get more of, though, is press coverage, probably because they are from another country and not only had to learn the royal ways of doing things but learn about a whole new language and culture as well. Plus, I think people rather like the idea of anybody from anywhere becoming royalty, not just those who already lived in a country with a monarchy in the first place.

That said, I don't think the men who marry women who are CP's in their own right attract quiet as much attention as the ladies who do the same thing, no matter what country they're from.

All in all I don't think a Crown Princess' popularity outside their country matters so much as acceptance in the country.
I think it is great that Frederik married an Aussie.:) I love the story how they met in a pub during the Sydney Olympics and she didn't know who he was at first. From such humble beginnings come the true romances and love.

Too bad Nicholas of Greece, who was with Frederik, didn't find a "princess" for himself!!! :p

With the media being what it is today in all countries, and technology being what it is, nobody can escape the hungry journalists who will turn over every rock and stone to uncover the skeletons in anyone's closet. It doesn't matter where you are from and in which royal family you are marrying. It wouldn't matter if the princess to be was from the Antarctic. There is always some journalist willing to go there to find out who her ex-boyfriends are or if she ever got a bad grade in home economics.

I honestly think it would be much easier to find CPs that weren't foreign so that they wouldn't have to learn anything about the country.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I remember reading that the Danish Monarchy wanted a foregin bride for Frederick becuase they wanted to boost Denmark's profile abroad. They wanted to encourage trade/economic ties with another country, something that would be almost guaranteed by a foreign princess.
Moreover, in an ever-growing EU they were worried about being lost at the wayside because of bigger and more powerful countries like Frqance and Germany and newer nations coming in.

It's easier to get to know someone if they don't get all blushing and bashful because it's a prince who's inviting htem for coffee. If a girl doesn't know the guy's a prince she'll be more natural and he can be sure that she likes him and not only the novelty of dating a prince.

Whether it is accurate or not is something I never claimed, however it is something I've read online in a couple of places. And I was merely responding to the comments made by another poster.

I had no idea Margrethe & Co was so strategically minded. And playing high stakes too; all Frederik's previous girlfriends were Danish - he might just as well have married one of them; he certainly had the age.

And Frederik just went along with that scheme?? Like in the good old days where royals were 'traded' for higher purposes. What a good boy he is.

And all this time I just thought two people met and fell in love.... :p

I have a question¿.It is mainly for our argentinian friends. I have noticed Mary is quite popular in Australia, but I dont know how popular is Maxima in Argentina.

As you can see I´m mexican and I´ve heard much more about Letizia than what I´ve heard of Maxima, and both latin american countries are quite close. :S

I wouldn´t say she´s popular here, argentinians do not care about royalty,it´s very far from here. Most people know 3 or 4 princesses,Letizia,Caroline,Ladi Di ,and Maxima is just one more, there´s no more expectation about her because of being argentinian.Of course she´s respected and news about her are followed like any other popular figure.By the way, it was disappointing that she prefered Holland in the World Cup match against Argentina, she just shouldn´t have said that,it makes her more distant and unattractive, for me of course.
