I've heard about the Mette-Marit airplane thing. Not a very pleasant moment for her or Haakon, but she couldn't help it, having phobias aren't fun! Trust someone with alektoraphobia (fear of chickens- pretty stupid, but yeah) instances where you have to face the fear can be extremely scary.

I never heard about her slapping or waving her finger at the maid. What was that all about?

And I still don't get the Martha-Louise finger and English press incident.

does some one know what about CP Letizia???

This is the first I've heard about M-M losing it w/ the assistant and on the airplane. I am assuming that was quite a while ago because she seems to carry herself quite well in public now.

Martha Louise seems to garner a lot of bad press for some reason. I haven't heard about her giving the finger but I have read several stories on Aftenposten (sp) about her that are less than flattering. I have read that she lived in England for a while, I believe it was in the 80's or early 90's.

I have a hard time believing the whole phobia thing, considering she went on plenty of vacations via plane prior to this incident without any problems. Trouble seemed to only arise when trips were work-related. Makes me wonder if her "phobia" was not really about work. I don't think she slapped her husband, he put his hand on her shoulder or arm and she rather briskly shook it off.

I have read about Mette-Marit bad tempered. I have not heard Maria Chantal bad tempered, but She doesn´t belong to reigning house.

I've read Prince Rainier was a very bad tempered person with his employees.

The whole M-M thing on the airplane is just a question of psychology. When you are put in a situation where you have to face your worst fears uncontrollable feelings come to live, subconcsiously. Some cry and some get angry. I don´t know her temper behind closed doors but I think there was a reason for the way she acted back then.

I know he´s not a princess (although he´s not quite content with his title as prince either ;)) but I could imagine Prince Henrik having a bad temper and being very strict as it is known from Frederik´s and Joachim´s memories as children

I always have my thoughts on Queen Sofia's temper. I don't see her as naturally bad tempered person (anything but IMO). Though I do imagine her as one of those 'don't mess with me or you'll regret it' women!:cool:

Do we know of any bad tempered Kings or Queens?

Bad tempers.....

Princess Letizia has a bad temper specially rigth before her wedding, a journalist commented on how unhappy she looked and she turned to his face and told him to take a good look and see if she looked unhappy.

Some people called her "Letizia sin modales"...(Letizia with no manners)

Wow. I would never have thought this of Letizia especially since she was a member of the press before her engagement. But it was a stupid and irritating comment to say to a bride-to-be though

The journalist is the infamous Jaime Penafiel . The man had spreaded too many rumors and lies on Letizia. However she said it in a half joking way. Right afterwards, Penafiel commented at the radio that Letizia made a better impression in person. Of couse now he turned the table again, started the new lies.
Long time ago, Queen Sofia also had a similar talk with Penafiel after reading one of his articles on her. At one occasion, Jaime M. (Elena's husband) was pointing his finger angrily at Paloma Barrientos (another gossip writer) after she spreaded many lies on him.

Queen Beatrix' bad temper is legendaric. Many ministers have told in interviews about the sharp and difficult questions the Queen fired at them.

She once remarked in an audience with all main chief editors: 'Gentlemen, the lie rules', accusing them not to tell the whole stories, giving their own unterpretation to half-truths or even telling utter nonsenses and presenting these that as 'facts'.

Since then the royal words 'de leugen regeert' (the lie rules) has become a new saying in Dutch language. There is even a program on media (and its misses) with that name, uncovering lies and half-truths in newspapers, tv-programs and other media: de leugen regeert. They named it to the famous line of the Queen.

At the palace the Queen is known as a good employer but a véry demanding one. There are many stories about the Queen freezing, with one eyebrow lifted and totally ignoring a poor member of the Household if things are not going perfectly. It is difficult to find a picture. I think every Dutchman will know what I mean with the Queen looking non-amused. It looks more or less like this, a view of "I have seen it and I am not amused!"

Journalists (I dream of being one myself someday) can be great people and write informative, truthful articles, but many of them are also scum of the earth who spread awful lies and stretch the truth just to sell their stories. No wonder Letizia, Queen Sofia and Jaime M. got so upset!

Press in Spain is crazy about Princess Letizia, they say whatever no matter what, due to talk about Princess Letizia is a good business, if magazines post about Princess Letizia they will sell more, is just gossips, serious press has a very good impression on Princess Letizia behavior.

What a truly interesting discussion! I read the whole topic just now. Personally, I am in agreement about Marie-Chantal; to me, she's just a more grown up version of Paris Hilton. I find her to be rude.
As for Crown Princess Mette-Marit; yes, she had an unusual past for a future Queen---but Prince Charles certainly played around and we're not bringing up his past behavior. Prince Andrew brought a soft porn star (Koo Stark) to meet his mother--personally, I think that is about the worst behavior I've ever heard of for a royal! I think that CP MM entered a very stressful life, and had some trouble adapting to it for a little while. She appears to do quite well now. As for CP Mary--I do think she's a little aloof, but perhaps she is just very shy. She looks like she could be shy.

Henri, what an interesting item about Queen Beatrix. I've always thought the Queen was mild mannered, of course this judging pictures of her and meeting crowds at royal appearances which is all together different from working with her staff and government ministers. Your story of the Queen and the ministers just adds to the respect I have for her. Queen Beatrix is intelligent and doesn't abide fools or liars.
I remember seeing pictures of Diana on a skiing trip during her second year of marriage and she behaved very rudely to the press and photographers even after Charles pleaded to her to let them get their pictures and they would then be left alone.

Yes, Katrianna. I agree. Queen beatrix has not bad temper but a deep intelligence. Sje is quite a character. She only wants things to be done. Is this wrong ? I don't think so.

She and her daugher Cristina are the same kind of woman, sweet tempered, they can handle a lot of BS, but once their tempers rise, run as fast as you can:eek:

They both strike me as the don't-mess-with-me-cold-anger-never-forget-never-forgive kind of women:ermm:

Elena is more like her father, a explosive temper that can fire in any moment, but they calm down easier than the Queen and Cristina

"Still waters run deep"

I can think of one example in more recent years when Princess Anne came over as a bad-tempered woman: when a woman in the crowd offered some flowers to the Queen Mother one Christmas Day and Princess Anne snatched them away, snapping, "What a ridiculous thing to do!"

This story has been distorted as a game of 'Chinese whispers', the more time it gets passed on more things get added or omited.

The incident happened a few years ago, the Queen Mother was not present as she was already dead! It was at Sandringham, members of the public wait outside the church for the royal family, after the service they go and speak to some of the people there. Anne in particular is actually very good at spending time speaking to quite a few people. That Christmas day was a bitterly cold day, the woman Anne spoke to told her they had got there at 7.30am!!! (and had sat out in the cold for several hours) That's when Anne exclaimed "What a ridiculous thing to do!" No snatching of flowers involved!

Anne can be abrupt, she doesn't suffer fools.

At the time of the M-M incident I was in Spain and saw the video of the "incident".
European TV channels are not so shy when showing anything involving famous people and the video I saw was M-M definitely hitting out at Haakon but he put up his hand and stopped it reaching the royal face.
It was then said that she was hitting out at an assistant or her lady in waiting, then someone came up with the wonderful excuse that she had a flying phobia.
I believe that she is coping with her exalted position quite well now but the story of a phobia I don´t believe for one second.

Wow I've never heard of this story before.
Is that really how it happened??

Sorry but her flying phobia is very well known and has been for a long time. I have a driving phobia myself and I can tell you it is no joke !

I don't suffer fools either, but that was still uncalled for.

I only know that she & her family had to flee Kuwait and that they were classified as refugees. Perhaps she attended the American University on a scholarship????
I think the status of refugee doesn't neccesarily mean you are poor, but that you need papers to reside in a country not your own.

I don't remember that she tried to hit his face!

i love protocol (and i have to say this thread is a great idea)... it's some kind of addictive cause i have that i love finding mistakes (after all, that's how people can learn) :D

i don't know if this may classify as breaking protocol, as there's no rule in protocol that says you can't show your nerves in public (although you need to take care of the image you give), in this case it had to do a lot with mette marit's fear of flying.

an extract of hellomagazine, where it explains what happened:

"Crown Princess Mette-Marit's cool elegance was shaken recently in an emotional outburst that was captured on video. The 28-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has expressed her regrets about the incident, and blames her public display of nerves on her profound fear of flying.

The images, broadcast on a local Norwegian TV channel, show Mette-Marit and her husband leaving an aeroplane minutes after landing in Karmoe. Apparently distressed by a photographer who had been allowed on board the flight, the crown princess can be seen angrily confronting her personal assistant, Hilde Harladstad, near the plane’s exit. As Prince Haakon intervened and attempted to assist his wife down the plane steps, she raised her voice and, pushing his hand away, exclaimed, “We said that there were no photos inside.”

By the time Mette-Marit reached the red carpet on the tarmac a few seconds later, she had recovered her composure. She went on to greet well-wishers at the airport with a smile and a wave. "

and the photos, from hellomagazine (hola) as well.

Gosh are we still discussing MM's attack on her husband and aide 8 years ago? One thing that should be explained about phobias is that you have no control over your behaviour when you are put in the situation you fear most. When I went on a little ski lift with my children, I froze and couldn't get a grip over myself, the firs tperson I would slap was my husband, believe me!:D
