Agreed, but in the meantime the Governor-General usually represents us at Royal weddings; eg he attended the wedding of Mary & Frederik, and he will be going to Windsor for the Charles and Camilla wedding.

Although Mary and Frederik were a big hit, the suggestion that the Danish RF would be more appropriate for us than the House of Windsor was put forward by republicans trying to embarass the Prince of Wales, who was here at the same time.

I can imagine that a lot of Australian's may have said this, but the chances of this having are non-existant.
Australians voted in a refferendum at the end of the 1990's to vote on whether they wanted to be a Republic rather than a constitutional monarchy as we are now. The refferendum was not successful, hence why we still have a British head of state.

I agree with you hillary I don't want Charles to be king of Australia either.
On the subject of an Australian royal family I think it would be a good idea if we held a vote. We would pick members of the British royal family and vote on which ones should be king and queen of Australia and after the queen dies we could formally ask them to start up an Australian royal family.

My suggestion would be that if Australia needs to pick up a Royal Family they should go with Mary and Fred. Then, when they have a second kid he or she would take over in time.

I'll be careful with Edna to make her too close to power, remember Catherine the Medici? She literally cleaned the House of Valois until her hubby became King. Remember Livia in the series I Claudius?

Well I am the obvious choice for Duchess of Adelaide!
How about :
King Harald of Australia
Queen Sonja of Australia
Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary (of course!)
Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit of Victoria
WA and Maxima, Duke and Duchess of Queensland (Maxima would like the sun)
Madeline, Countess of New South Wales (like Dennism said she would love Bondi)
Countess Sophie and Prince Edward of Western Australia
Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Princess Anita of South Australia
Princess Victoria of Tasmania (I know its Mary's home but V would be used to the cold)
:)

We have I Claudius on DVD and the other famous (or infamous) movie she made, Dune. I think Sian Phillips, who played evil Livia is one of the most under rated actresses around. She was traveling around the States doing a monologue on Marlene Dietrich: http://www.jadis.demon.co.uk/pictures/goddess.htm
Back to the fantasy thread. I think Australia is too big for a kingdom, could we upgrade it to empire? Empress Nicole Kidman sounds a little more Roman Empire than just queen Nicole.

In all honesty, is Australia were a stand-alone-monarchy, it would have to be an Empire. (It would just be the Commonwealth with another name), as the States of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania are states in themselves (almost like those of pre-1870 Germany). They are such that Her Majesty is represented directly in each of those states by a Governor. I realise the system is far more complicated, but I fear I would confuse everyone beyond measure by attempting to explain in more detail..
