The "Slip" Dress

In NYC, Diana wore a slip dress (sorry, can't find the photo) and I just thought it looked "wrong" for her style. Just finished Simmone Simon's latest book on Diana and Diana was very disappointed in Galliano, the designer, as he made it up in the wrong fabric as a "surprise." So, she got to the hotel, saw the dress and was horrified as she felt it looked like she was wearing a nightgown! What started out as a promising "look" ended up being a nightmare in Diana's eyes because of the last minute change in fabric! You'd think he'd have run it by her.....

I think that was pretty awful. The polka-dotted bobby socks were BAD (and I remember I had to have some just like hers). And she had this odd outfit she wore in Germany and maybe more, I called it "the bumble bee" -- it was a predominantly yellow coat, with black plaid stripes. There was a weird matching hat. Yuck!!

I think this is the outfit you are talking about Iowabelle, and I agree, it was pretty hideous! To top it off, she probably paid a pretty penny for it, since it was an Escada design (a German design house).

I guess she was trying to compliment her hosts by wearing it ... but I don't think it worked! Those in the German fashion design industry must have cringed to see her pick this one, when she could have picked other much nicer Escada designs.

Yes, it's Escada and she likely paid big $$$ for it. One of her less fortunate looks......That design house has gorgeous things but oh so pricey!

I've been blinded, it's "the bumble bee"!

Well, IMO she usually got it right. I saw one of the dress exhibits and the clothes were so beautiful (I got to see the Travolta dress among others).

I agree completely Iowabelle - I think it is pretty telling that Diana spent over 15 years in the public eye, wearing hundreds of outfits, and yet, we can only come up with a few dozen that we didn't like.

I've gone to a couple of the dress exhibits too - it is quite something isn't it? The Travolta dress was so beautiful up close wasn't it? Did you notice that it was worn in some places? To me that just made it more special - to see that this dress was well loved and well used.

You have to look at her clothes in their correct context, the 1980's. There's a reason it's called the decade fashion forgot, most of which was evident by what Diana wore, which at the time was the height of fashion

I like the dress but the "shoes" is not good at all, seems that victoria could use some help on the shoe issue, thinking of the horrible white shoes she´s been wearing all spring...

the shoes are all wrong, plain sandles like those should be worn with dress down clothing example a jean skirt or jean dress but not a pretty dress. now if she had some strapie sandles, maybe a nice lime green color. that would set the dress off nicely. or even a pair of pumps could work. but the color would have either highlight a subtle color in the dress.

I like the cut of the dress and the ribbon trim, but not the pattern. A solid color would have looked better. And the shoes look better suited for a vacation on the Riviera than a royal birthday party.

Well, this is not a forum to criticize only one person, let's "Share The Love"!!!

We don't often list photos of men and their fashion mistakes, so here is one of one- Laurent REALLY needs to donate these pants to charity because they don't do anything for him!

Eliza
Laurent must have let William-Alexander borrow his pants for the recent DRF photo shoot...

Personally I thought that Queen Sophia's outfit at her sons wedding was most inappropriate. Surely the cream/white full length dress should have been reserved for the bride??? The black mantilla looked dreadful with it!

Also, can anyone tell me why Sophia wore a black mantilla to her sons wedding but a white one to the enthronement of the new pope!?

I won't repost the pics to save space, but they're on page 9 of this thread.

I think black mantillas are the usual type worn to weddings in Spain. Queen Sophia wore a white one to the enthronement of the new Pope because she has le privlege du blanc which mean she is one of the few women in the world allowed to wear white to the vatican. She is allowed to wear white becuase she is a Catholic Queen (others who are allowed to wear white are the Queens of Belgium, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, the Archduchesses of Austria, and the Princesses of Savoia). Everyone else must wear black.

I believe Her Majesty's dress was actually a pale pistachio green color - it really did not show up very well in photographs and looked almost too big for her. Also, the traditional color of a mantilla is black, even for weddings (don't want to compete with the bride!) - the Queen wore a white mantilla to the Pope's enthronement according to the 'privilege du blanc' for Catholic queens.

Sorry - didn't see that someone else had already answered above!
