Who says she was buying them for herself? And who also says Kate will wear these clothes in public? Maybe she was buying gifts or making purchases for her 'working from home' wardrobe...comfy but casual, smart but not stiff...

I hope she doesn't wear the skirt and jacket together. Separately, they are nice pieces. The skirt would look great with a black cashmere twinset. The jacket would be good with a short black circle skirt to soften the boxyness. As for the jacket looking like cheap material; well, you get what you pay for. When you're the stay-at-home spouse of a soldier, I guess you can't do couture. Those feather thingie earrings are really beyond cheap looking.

I hope this frugalness is not a sign that she is bored and is doing theraputic shopping. I'm not going to speculate...

Kate today at the Royal Marsden Hopital. She's wearing Amanda Wakeley.

More photos, from the Daily Mail.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge open cancer ward at Royal Marsden | Mail Online

My only major complaint is that when she pulls all her hair in front of her, it gives the appearance of bad posture.

I think it's a great look. But I wish she would do something with her hair.

I like that she's keeping her appearance understated for this event. She looks elegant and comfortable too.

I really like the dress. Wonder how old it is? It does not appear in the current Wakeley collection.

Agree with Daria S,a very simple but elegant look-it is really flattering and doesnt shift the attention away from the cause she supports.Im sure she made the people very happy and showed her solidarity which is the most important thing at a charity event.

I think its a very boring appearance.
Nice belt or a brooch would fresh the look and make it special in any way.

Thanks, ayvee. I didn't look at the online shop, just the amandawakeley.com. Ms. Wakeley has some (not all) really nice evening wear on the main site. Had not heard of her before.

No need to wear any additional jewelry as Kate's hair would either hide it or get tangled up in it.

Kate wears Amanda Wakeley quite often I think.
Diana also used the designer, but most of the clothes designed were for private use.

Its quite a pretty dress and a lovely fit but the color is boring or at least very classic. The overall would've been great if she wore her hair differently at least pulled back.

Ok, I am no fan of the hair hanging down in order to eventually fiddle with it. I like the look, although the colour is abit bland, but I dont get the connection to the event. Kate looks good but this outfit is kind of a classic cocktail dress with an evening clutch, similar look to when meeting with Michelle Obama in Buckingham Palace etc. It looks very strange at a daytime event opening a children's cancer ward.

It seems a long time since we have had something new to comment on I like the simplicity of the look and agree that it seems a very good choice to wear an understated outfit to maintain the attention on the event. She certainly has a penchant for dresses which I also like.

I guess opinions differ, I see this clearly as a daytime dress and certainly not cocktail, though with different accessories I think it would work. If you go to the website and look at the bag it is straw with brass trim, nothing evening about it.
