At the risk of sounding like I am equivocating, I like this dress but...
I think the sleeve length is wrong for her. This long she looks either like a prairie schoolgirl or an older lady.
The second has to do with the fit of the dress. I noticed this at the sheep-shearing - so it happened throughout. When she reached with her arms, the dress pulled up in front. It's perfectly illustrated in this picture. The waist pulls up and so does the skirt just like ringing a bell. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/04/18/article-2607555-1D2CAA5500000578-950_964x609.jpg It just needed some ease somewhere to keep this from happening.
Finally, I too wish they had gone barefoot. Sand is a gift to mere morals (even royal mortals) and feels spectacular. But if you think the Duchess's shoes were a problem, then consider that William wore suede on the beach. Of course, I suppose sand would clean suede, but that is not the point.
