Queen Silvia's newest favorite designer has to be Yuki. The Japanese-born designer is now based in London, running his exclusive business under his full name, Gnyuki Torimaru.
Dressing Queen Silvia is so to speak his 'Royal comeback' after twenty years since he first became famous for a dress made for Princess Diana in 1986 which was worn by her at the Imperial banquet during the official visit to Japan with Prince Charles.
Queen Silvia started wearing her first Yuki designs around five years ago. His style is easily recognizable for its trademark details: Gathering of very light, specially made fabrics, mostly tightly pleated, to the midriff and a flowing silhouette. His dresses are exquisitely tailored with a minimum of seams; most gowns actually exist only of two or three fabric patterns. He has always remained faithful to this line of designing and even invented totally new fabrics to make it work. Link:

His designs mark quite a change of Queen Silvia's style. Here's her complete 'Yuki collection' so far - some of the gowns more successful than others.

thank you Boris, you are like a human library for Silvias wardrobe I would have never thought all theese dresses were by Yuki but when you put them together it makes perfect sense. Did she not wear another fire engne red dress to a birthday or soemthing in Stockholm that was also a Yuki design? I dont find all of the equally impressive, the return dinner in Japan looks a bit like a sack and the one she wore yesterday also looked to big for her. I love the colour of the blue one and the asymethric black and white one

It is though IMo a pitty that she can for once choose a swedish designer for just one nobel, once in 26 years is not to impressive IMO, considering it would be THE chance to showcase what swedish designers are capable of.

You're correct Larzen, there was a dark red one-shouldered dress on the occasion of a friend's birthday in Stockholm... it was well covered by a matching stole on pics so I'm not 100% sure if it's Yuki. But I am 100% sure that we will see it again !
And since I am a walking library for Silvia's wardrobe : Her 1977, 1978, 1981 (all Olga Persson) and 1990 (some Atelier Felicitas) Nobel gowns were by Swedish designers.
I don't know if there's any Swedish designer around these days who could match the expertise of a Jacques Zehnder...
As for Yuki: The red Nobel gown grows on me because of its dramatic medieval splendour, the white Japan return dinner dress is quite something in terms of construction by tailoring, but it indeed: It's simply too big.
In general, I consider Yuki a very nice change of pace for Queen Silvia but prefer him to design gowns for 'lesser' evening events and hope we continue to see more of the great Zehnder as well.

Thanks for photos!
I like the vibrant colour and style simplicity in the Nobel-2007 outfit of Queen Silvia. The outfit structure reminds of me Japanese kimonos.
Special thanks to Boris for detailed explanations.

Thank you for your kind words, Al bina.
I missed out on one more Yuki design for Queen Silvia, this time for daywear. First worn during the state visit to Japan 2007 and later at the Chelsea Flower Show, his signature is unmistakable even when designing a suit:

I have to be honest and say I was a lttle disappointed with this year's gown--there was too much going on, especially when the Queen was seated. NOrmally I think she can't miss, but I'm not sure about this year......

Boris,
I am very, very partial to everything Japanese. It has been great to learn about Gnyuki Torimaru, the Japanese fashion designer of Her Majesty Queen Silvia. In my eyes, Japanese fashion designers can do no wrong. Well… the above is my biased opinion…

When I saw this gown I immediately thought of the gown designed by YUKI that Princess Diana wore during a state visit to Japan in 1989. (Click on the link below.) It was sold as Lot #68 at her auction. Does anyone know who designed Queen Silvia's gown and if Princess Diana's gown was the inspiration for this one?

Mrswitham, you'll find the answers to your question and additional info on page 8 of this thread.
Both gowns (Princess Diana's in 1986 and Queen Silvia's in 2003) were designed by Japanese-born and London-based designer Yuki. Rather than one dress being the inspiration for the other, Yuki has a distincive technical style which he has been varying for decades - again, see page 8 for more, including links & Queen Silvia's other Yuki gowns.

Wonderful, wonderful outfit and the hat is the most glorious confection, mmm yummy!

Her "Companion" looks rather wan and pales into insignificance beside her.

Queen Silvia looked spectacular! The suit itself also has some great details and the hat is very chic.
