On reflection, I think the muted nature of Charlene's presentation was appropriate. It was a good call on her part - and I base that on what I am reading here on this thread. IMO it was fine for the Grimaldis to be there - even in their own right, never mind Grace - but Charlene is not a starlet and she correctly did not put herself into competition with the rest of the sttendees who are doing something very pertinent for their careers.

I loved Charlene's gown. Cutting edge in evening wear. I also like that she didn't try to wear a necklace with it. The earrings? Were they not worn at the Circus year before last? I love them. I see nothing wrong with her hair, although her hair will never be her best feature.

Overall, I give her a 90.

I see no "apparent" sadness...she has a naturally wistful countenance.

the dress was ok , nothing to write home about , but I think it was the hair that was the worst .

I quite liked it. But it was underwhelming. She can do better, in my opinion.

Royalty cannot compete with Hollywood. That was why PG was so good. She was both.

I thought she looked lovely and in keeping with her position. Honestly, I am SO tired of seeing Angelina Jolie's leg .... year after year, it seems.

Actually, I'm pretty tired of seeing Angelina Jolie, definitely overrated IMO.

I´m not sure about the dress. I don´t like the top part in the front view, but the back is stunning.
Bad hairstyle, though, it doesn´t flatter her face.

The stars prepare for months for these events and the women spend all day getting made up by stylists, jewelers, beauticians, cosmeticians. The Oscars are very important for their career. PC doesn't have that pressure. She just has to look respectable.

Dress is a simple design but looks good. I like the ribbed material on the upper part.

I agree with Tyger's comment about not trying to look like a member of Hollywood's A list, and being a little more restrained in the style and cut. Then I saw Gwyneth Paltrow andI was blown away. That is the gown I would have liked to see Charlene in.- but also with a different hairstyle.

Charlene would have looked gorgeous in Gywneth's gown; simple, elegant but beautiful flowing lines, but without the cape.

When I saw her dress I thought, oh no! But then I thought, would it have been so bad if this was any other event? The gown was light, airy, delicate and quite pretty but for the Oscars I expected something more. She has worn IMO a number of gowns which, if we had seen for the first time at the Oscars, I'm sure we would have been raving about. I give you;

Prince Albert Of Monaco And His Fiancee Charlene Wittstock and

So was this a deliberate ploy by the Princess? Was she saying, " I am a Princess and I don't need to compete with these actresses"? I guess we will never know but judging by some of PC's previous outings I wouldn't be surprised.

BTW With regards to the poster who said she couldn't compete with Angelina Jolie I would still put Princess Charlene's gown above her's.

Angelina Jolie is a cheap joke, without taste. Charlene looked lovely.

Thanks for a review of some of charlene's gowns, the fushia look would have been better, imo, but Charlene was there with business people, not models. Check out the wife of the Disney exec she was with, not Angelina Jolie, she was window dressing.

Charlene has worn some really beautiful gowns, I don't know what happened last night. Angelina would be a worst dressed but Charlene would be a most disappointing, boring, showed up at the wrong event, winner.

Nice pics , princess Charlene She Look Nice , I Like The Techn pink & Dark Red Dress

I also thought that her dress was too simple, I think she was playing it too safe. She should have glam it up like this actress:

Or even dress like this actress (in a pink color):

either dress she wore would look great on her, but I just think the dress that she would was too simple and too safe. She need to not be afraid with fashion, She need to fashionista

I think the first one is a little too flashy for a Princess, I do think she was going for simple...but she went too simple. Penelope Cruz looks great and seeing Charlene in it would have been nice. This is actually the first time I have been awed by Penelope Cruz.

Then I saw Gwyneth Paltrow and I was blown away. That is the gown I would have liked to see Charlene in - but also with a different hairstyle.

Agree - had the same reaction and the same thought. But....

Bingo! Also, just occurred to me - might Albert have an opinion on how she dresses at some of these venues? Especially when its about business? Might be a factor in what we see....

I'm sure there are a lot of people who can show up for an event that's about business without wearing a boring dress. I don't think Albert was wearing a business suit and tie.

All those dresses are great. That red dress would especially be great for the Oscars. Charlene has proven she can knock it out of the park when she wants to.
Maybe she purposely dressed in an understated way so as not to show up the actresses since it is their night. She comes across as a modest person.

Agree with posters that feel CP Charlene was "playing it too safe"~

Its ok to be understated & modest (see Gwyneth Paltrow). Nobody expected Charlene to channel Jennifer Lopez, but to me she was underwhelming. Its the Oscars, after all.

I agree with the above posters far too safe. No need to go Hollywood celeb style but some of her previous gowns would have been a better option.

I liked the dress of an actress called Louise Roe (she wore a Black Halo gown) I thought Charlene could have worn something more like that.
(sorry can't add a pic but if you Google it there will be photos of the actress)

Even if she wore the same dress that Gwyneth Paltrow (with [and] without the cape), I would still think she would be playing it safe and simple. If she was going to stick with simple than look at emma stone dress, she looked great in it. Also, the oscar awards should be about business. It should be about the movies, actor, actress, the fashion, glits, glam, beauty, and not business. If any awards event is about business then it would be bording and uneventful to note in some people mind. I have seen the picture of the prince and princess with the exec. of disney and his wife. And the dress is much like a dress that I maybe be wear as some one bridemaid.

The night should have been about remenbering and creating memories and not business. Their dresses does not say that. But I do love the princess hairstyle.

Charlene wasn't wearing a business suit either. I am a fan of Charlene because she appears to be her own woman. She wears what she likes and I'm all for that.

If she had worn something more dramatic, someone would have said she looked like a dance hall girl.

The girl got some class going on...

Uh....:ermm:.....it's all about business, down to the last detail - big time!

No, I don't believe that Princess Charlene was deliberately trying to say that she didn't want to compete with actresses. I believe that Princess Charlene likes ARIKS and that is the dress she chose. Sometimes I wonder if Charlene has a stylist or if she just trusts her own judgment. This white dress was so devoid of stlye, it looked like an underslip to me. The runway version of this dress is awful too. Turtlenecks and haute couture gowns don't really go together well.
