Many thanks for the pics. The gown is not what you would call a grand dress. But perfectly suitable for the occasion.
The colouful lady in traditional dress I would guess to be from Bolivia. Or is she from Greenland perhaps.

The dress is all right. I do not like the collar embellishment. Seams on the dress seem not to be properly pressed. The hairstyle is awkward. The overall look is so so.

Love this new dark blue dress. It's simple, timeless and very elegant. Matched with the white gloves this looks great! I liked how simple her hair was styled and her make up was quite nice.

that's a great shade of blue and the cut of the dress is flawless. i also like the detail around the neck.

This is quite an unusual gown for Mary to wear, but she is following the Queen's line in something more austere and straightforward for a day event (Margarethe wears the same gown each year as if it is a uniform for this particular event).
The cut is simple and elegant, but look closely and the unusual folded hem-line gives it an almost Japanese-style feel, whilst the sparkling neck-line adds a touch of the 1960s style of formal wear. The deep blue colour is perfect for the event, formal and sombre and giving a nod to Margrethe's choice of colour.

The waist reminds me of Crown Princess Victoria's wedding gown. Navy blue seems to be the colour for this event.

I wasn't that impressed the first few pics I saw but when she stands still it hangs beautifully.

I really like it I didn't at first but on closer examination .. nice

Lovely dress, looks well fitted with the wide set in waist and pretty modest scoop neckline and the crossed over skirt gives interest. With her hairdo it looks very 60s to me. Elegant, warm and confortable. Love the gloves too, why no gloves on New Year's Day?

The first New Year Court was an evening event where tiaras were worn. Today's event was a daytime reception which is, I believe, the reason for the gloves today.

The more pics I too liked it a little better. I would have not done that collar thing.

I love it! :flowers: The perfect gown to complement Frederik's uniform. They look very fine together. It's also a gown that can have unique accessories to change the look. All-in-all, a wise, judicious purchase, as the saying goes. ;)

I notice in the second picture from above, Mary shook hand without glove while the man took her hand with glove. Any explanation on this custom/protocol? Thanks.

Here are a few more: I think she looks lovely. The dress is perfect for the occasion, elegant, polished and regal. The purpose of the event is to allow the guests to shine.

Mary has pulled a stunner. Absolutely perfect for the occasion and as many have pointed out, it works well with Frederik's uniform (and his smile).

Jack, you have really nailed the look Mary has achieved. I went back and looked at all the shots and I have to agree with you, especially about the touch of 1960's style.

I have to admit that, as with many of you, my first impression was definitely not a good one. IMO the first shots I saw looked dreadful and I was going wha.....t? But thankfully the next lot of snaps showed a very elegant and stylish Court Dress.

I even loved the semi-formal hairstyle she had and thought that she had taken her lead from Queen Margrethe who sported her normal "working" hairstyle. Mary looked great with the hairstyle she chose, not a professional updo, but one that suited the gown and the occasion.

Frederik and Mary attended today the last New Year's Court. Mary recycled her New Year's gown from 2010. Rosa tulle skirt and dark brown short jacket. Was hoping she would recycled this outfit this year. Love it, very princess-ly. Lovely.

I like the added belt. It really helps complete the outfit, I think, plus with the updo. Her 2010 look was missing something and I didn't like her hair being down. 2013 was better, but this is the best, I think.

It bugs me that her sash is inside her jacket. I know it's attached to the bodice of her dress but it just doesn't look right with just the tail of it showing. I'd prefer it if she had the sash showing on the outside of her jacket and perhaps going under the belt jacket. I think it would give it a more finished look.

A true Princess look. I love it! I would love to see another brooch.

Going under the belt might have looked nice and had a finished look, but under the jacket, all looked very neat and tidy.

I can only think of two possibilities: either they tried the sash on the outside and it didn't look right or Mary intended to (or even did) take her jacket off during the event.

IMO this is her best look for the New Year's Courts in 2015.

Finally! A look I love! Best look of the 3! And boy, when the CPC enters the room, the butlers inspect the carpet closely!

oh gosh no, I hate that. Victoria wore her sash on the outside and it makes it look sloppy, somehow. I definitely prefer the way Mary wears it.

I like Crown Princess Mary's recycling of the ensembles. A satiny ribbon around a waistline seems unnecessary. The ensemble is all right.

I am not sure about the current trend for women wearing only one glove. I remember reading once about glove etiquette that a lady never removes her gloves to shake hands unless they are soiled (example would be gardening gloves). I wish I could remember where I read this but I haven't found the book yet. Notice that QEII always wears both gloves and looks very put together in the process. The other royals who wear only one give the impression that they don't quite know what to do with gloves. I realize that they probably think it more polite to use a bare hand to shake hands but if they are going to do that they need to take off both. Standing around wearing one glove and carrying the other just looks silly and spoils whatever look they are trying to pull off.

Edit for Additional info: Found my source. "A Guide to Elegance" by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux
Published by HarperCollins Publishers UK. Copyright 1964, 2003. From page 65 "But a lady never takes off her gloves in order to shake hands (unless, of course, they are very soiled gardening or riding gloves) and furthermore, she never needs to apologize for keeping them on."

A lovely look and a nice color combination but I am not a big fan of her jacket matched with such a skirt. Nevertheless she looked good.

I absolutely love this look! It's so princess like and whimsical. I love the color combination. This gown is simply stunning. One of her best looks.

I seem to remember a discussion in these threads way back - about wearing one glove and holding the other and if remember correctly that is the correct, traditional way for the royal ladies. I think that someone at that time provided pictures of Queen Margrethe and Queen Elizabeth with one glove held in hand.
I find it very elegant actually.

Very ellegant, but I liked it better in 2010, I loved her hair down!

I really loved the blue gown, though the collar was a bit much. The shade of blue is lovely on Mary. The pink and black ensemble is OK, but I'm not crazy about it.
