William and Camilla share carriage

The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William will share a carriage in the Trooping the Colour procession on Saturday, royal aides said. It is the first time that both William and Camilla, his stepmother, have ridden in the official procession. They will share the first barouche - an 18th-century landau formerly used by the Queen Mother - with the Earl and Countess of Wessex. William, 22, who is expecting his degree results on Saturday, famously crossed swords with the Earl when his uncle Edward's TV production company broke a media agreement and filmed him at university in St Andrews.

The Duke of York, with daughters Princess Beatrice, 16, and Princess Eugenie, 15, will follow behind in the second barouche with the Princess Royal's husband, Rear Admiral Timothy Laurence. Prince William and Camilla will watch the Trooping the Colour parade from the window of the Major-General Office's overlooking Horse Guards. Others in the carriage procession will join them at the vantage point favoured by the Queen Mother and where the Duke of Wellington's desk is kept.

Camilla is expected to appear on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony with the Queen and other senior members of the royal family to watch an RAF flypast following Trooping the Colour.

CAMILLA MAKES BALCONY DEBUT FOR TROOPING OF COLOUR 13 JUNE 2005

The Duchess of Cornwall has made her first appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Camilla joined her husband Prince Charles and the rest of the Royal Family for the annual Trooping of the Colour parade on Saturday afternoon. Given that the event is staged to mark the Queen's official birthday, the 57-year-old Duchess might have been forgiven for feeling a little nervous. Her Majesty soon put everyone present at ease, though, by cracking a joke that left the entire family in stitches.

Camilla, dressed in an ivory suit and hat, had earlier joined her stepson Prince William and the Earl and Countess of Wessex in a horse-drawn carriage for the Trooping of the Colour procession. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, who was celebrating his 84th birthday, travelled in a open-top phaeton, while Prince Charles and the Princess Royal made their way down The Mall on horseback.

With thousands of well-wishers cheering from the sides of the road, the royals were escorted by 122 soldiers from the Household Cavalry, all dressed in their spectacular ceremonial uniforms. And the family was then treated to an equally impressive display of precision marching and horsemanship, as over 1,200 troops offered a traditional salute to the monarch. Camilla's appearance at the high-profile ceremony came just as her position on the newly-revised Precedence List was revealed. The official document, which is drawn up by the Queen and determines seating arrangements at State events, places the Duchess fourth, after Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra and, of course, the monarch herself.

1. The Duchess stood between Prince William and Prince Charles for the traditional salute
2. Camilla was earlier joined by Prince William and the Countess of Wessex in a horse-drawn carriage
3. Soldiers dressed in spectacular ceremonial uniforms and bearskin hats provide Her Majesty with an appropriately impressive escort

It's interesting to note HRH The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich KG KT OM GBE AC QSO PC, wears the "GR" cyphers of His Majesty King George VI on his eppaulettes.

Speaking of Mountbattens, I have one of the last official photographs of Admirial of the Fleet, The Right Hon. Earl Mountbatten of Burma, in which he is wearing the three cyphers of HM King George V, HM King George VI and HM Queen Elizabeth II, on his corded eppaulette.
