Polar explorer Henry Worsley is undertaking Shackleton’s unfinished journey to the South Pole. 1st solo unsupported attempt #ShackletonSolo

The Duke of Cambridge has waved off an intrepid explorer hoping to become the first solo adventurer to cross the Antarctic unassisted and unsupported as he follows in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Former Army officer Henry Worsley, 55, a descendant of Frank Worsley, Shackleton’s skipper on the Endurance, will endure freezing temperatures, high winds and treacherous ice as he treks to the South Pole then travels to the other side of the land mass during a gruelling journey expected to last around 75 days.

William is patron of Mr Worsley’s 2015/16 Shackleton Solo Challenge and told him when they met at Kensington Palace: “It’s a huge challenge, but there’s no better person than you, we’ll be thinking of you at Christmas.”

Earlier this week when Princess, Prince William and Prince Harry teamed up for a playful day of silly walks and "welly-wanging", they had so much fun that they were late for the meeting afterward with the heads of their chosen charities.

Kate, 33, came in all smiles from the art and play session. "Her face was alive," the chief executive of East Anglia's Children's Hospices, Graham Butland, tells PEOPLE.

There were emotional moments, too, particularly in meeting with those who use hospice services. Kate had spoken to a child who'd recently lost a sibling, Butland says. "I had to apologize that every time she does something for us we end up reducing her to tears. She laughed that very nice laugh she does.

An intrepid explorer on the brink of making Antarctic history with a solo crossing across the ice has been taken to hospital with a potentially fatal condition.

Former Army officer Henry Worsley, 55, from Fulham, London was 71 days in to his attempt to become the first adventurer to cross the continent completely unsupported and unassisted when he had to call for help.

Battling temperatures of minus 44, tackling white-out blizzards and treacherous ice, the ex-lieutenant colonel had passed the South Pole, covering 913 miles and was a mere 30 miles from the finish.

...Mr Worsley has surpassed his original fundraising goal and garnered more than £101,000 for The Endeavour Fund - something he called "incredible" and a "huge reward" for his efforts.

The charity is managed by the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and supports injured or wounded veterans who wish to use sport or do an adventurous challenge as part of their rehabilitation and recovery.

A message from The Duke of Cambridge following the tragic news about Henry Worsley

Tragic end to Shackleton Solo Expedition | Endeavour Fund

The Duke of Cambridge, who was patron of the expedition, expressed his immense sadness at the explorer's death, saying he and Prince Harry had lost a friend.

He paid tribute to Henry Worsley's "selfless commitment" to his fellow servicemen and women, and pledged to make sure his family receive all they support they need.

The trek was raising money for the Endeavour Fund, a charity managed by the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

William said in a statement: "Harry and I are very sad to hear of the loss of Henry Worsley. He was a man who showed great courage and determination and we are incredibly proud to be associated with him.

"Even after retiring from the Army, Henry continued to show selfless commitment to his fellow servicemen and women, by undertaking this extraordinary Shackleton solo expedition on their behalf.

"We have lost a friend, but he will remain a source of inspiration to us all, especially those who will benefit from his support to the Endeavour Fund.

"We will now make sure that his family receive the support they need at this terribly difficult time."

Sad news indeed.

Friend of Prince William. He replaces Lord Javnrin who was the Queen 's former private secretary. William got to know him when Sir Keith was organising London 2012

Sir Kieth Mills was picked by Harry as Chairman other Invictus Games after consultation with William and now his been tipped to head up the Royal Foundation. It's a good pick

Sir Keith also Chairman of Board of Trustees for 1851 Trust which Kate is patron. So he knows all 3 royals.

I agree! It's a very good pick

The Duke of Cambridge has paid tribute to the dedication and passion of Lord Janvrin who has retired as chairman of the royal's charitable foundation after five years.

Sir Keith Mills, one of the key organisers of the London 2012 Games, will now take on the role of chairman of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Lord Janvrin, a former private secretary to the Queen, became a Foundation trustee in 2010 and as its chairman guided the body from its inception to become the main charitable platform for William, Kate and Harry.

The Duke, also speaking on behalf of his wife and brother, said: "Lord Janvrin has been a dedicated and passionate leader of our Foundation.

Through the Royal Foundation it seems that they're really going to be tackling the issue of cyberbullying head on and hard. I am really impressed with the list of organizations and their representatives that are bonding together to make online safer and a better place for all to enjoy. Hopefully this will also turn out to be a global endeavor too.
