The Honours thread

The order isn't for just Britain but for other realms too.

I would think it's best to increase the number of recipients. We all know the Order is based on merits, but there are a lot of people from all walks of life that deserve the Order as well. I question the lack of diversity in many of the Orders too. Stuff just need to be updated, IMO.

The Queen under pressure to appoint more women to Order of Merit, EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE writes | Daily Mail Online

She should appoint women, but also younger deserving people and incorporate some diversity in the order as well.

I think DofE should wear his medals in two rows. It wouldn't look so much like an awkward bill board.

But not just for the sake of appointing women, etc. Otherwise the award will cease to have any meaning.

The Order will always have meaning as long as it's being given to those who deserve it. Many of the Order's need fresh, young, diverse, and deserving faces.

Prince Charles given honorary military titles ahead of NZ visit:

"Prince Charles is to be given three military titles when he visits New Zealand in November.

The Queen has given her approval for the Prince of Wales to be made Admiral of the fleet of the Royal New Zealand Navy, a Field Marshal for the army and Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Prime Minister John Key announced Prince Charles' appointments, saying they would be formally recognised during a visit with his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.

"These appointments recognise the consistent and strong support Prince Charles has maintained for the New Zealand Defence Force," Key said.

"Speaking at this year's ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Gallipoli, the Prince demonstrated a deep empathy and understanding for the contribution and sacrifice of our Defence Force personnel in conflicts and peace keeping operations around the world."

The Prince of Wales has a strong association with the military, with a naval career that followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and both of his great-grandfathers.

The Prince also qualified as a Royal Air Force pilot flying both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. Members of the Royal family hold a number of honorary appointments within the NZDF.

The Prince of Wales was appointed as Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal New Zealand Air Force by The Queen in 1977, and relinquished this honorary position prior to his appointment as Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force."

When the Prince and Duchess visit, it will be the second royal visit this year.

The new Peers mean there are now 826 people in the House of Lords.

Danny Alexander isn't doing too bad for himself. Ten years ago he was the Head of Communications for the Cairngorms National Park Authority. Now he's receiving a knighthood.

This after he turned down a peerage.
