The Duke and The Queen are first cousins but with nearly 10 years difference in age and their father's weren't the closest of brothers. They probably enjoy each other's company but not spend a lot of time socialising together.

As for the children of the Queen visiting their second cousin in hospital - why - they didn't visit their own mother in hospital and although they all visited their father during the Christmas hospitalisation didn't all visit him during his later hospitalisations.

Security and the disruption to hospital routine is the reason usually given for them not visiting relatives in hospital. Even if her were at death's door I doubt any of the Queen, Margaret's children or even the Gloucesters would be there.

The first cousin that The Queen was closest in age to on her father's side - the late Earl Harewood died last year and if my memory serves me correctly she didn't attend his funeral.

Iluvbertie - do you imagine members of the family have started Skype-ing? Not necessarily the Queen - but it is a great way to be live and in touch with the family and staff. There is also the telephone. The telephone is easy.

I admit that I do hope, however distant, the Queen or the Duke have made some effort to reach out to The Duke of Kent in hospital. From a Corporate POV - he is a direct report in the firm. Were I his senior manager, I'd make a effort, that's for sure.

The Queen uses the telephone. When the DoE was in hospotial she rang every day. As Iluvbertie said, visits by royals are disruptive especially if its the Queen

We really shouldn't assume that because we don't see visits, that royals aren't caring or worried.

Couldn't agree more cepe.

I have no doubt that The Queen and Philip, along with The Duke of Gloucester have been in direct contact with their first cousin (or in Philip's case his second cousin as The Duke of Kent is the son of Philip's own first cousin, Marina), if permitted by the hospital at this point in time.

They would also be getting regular updates no doubt from his siblings - Micheal and Alexandra - children and wife, who I am sure have visited but without the fanfare that would be associated with a visit from The Queen.

Heck, the BRF don't even always attend the funerals or weddings of their first cousins,

This point is slightly incorrect, atleast as far as my limited experience in royal-watching is considered..Only 3 exception I could recollect in the past 3 generations is William not attending Peter Phillip's wedding (he had a friend's wedding, and Kate 'represented' him, and Queen not attending Michaels' wedding (more than enough valid reasons for that), or Harewood's funeral (I didnt understand that, maybe 'logistical' reasons)...

The Queen didn't go to the Gloucesters' wedding in 1972 either.

Nope..who cares..I guess we will have to wait till the Birthday parade to see what his "condition" is..

The FE on the British Monarchy website still has him doing 9 duties in April starting on the 16th. If that gets cancelled then we can assume that the matter is more serious than we were originally told.

For anyone interested the April FE includes three for Alexandra - her first for the year (and only 3 for The Queen - interestingly - although the FE doesn't include her audiences and council meetings etc, only the out and abouts.)

Perhaps a good solution to easing the burden on the older royals, without the York princesses becoming full time royals just now, would be for the Queen to allow Prince and Princess Michael of Kent to carry out official duties on her behalf. They have been doing so for decades anyway, just without royal funding, and as the Queen now pays for her famly now anyway she could easily change this. They are only in their mid 60 so could take on some of the work of the Queen, DofE and Alexandra who are all much older.

"who cares"?.....what a bizarre thing to say on 'The Royal Forums' about our thoughts on a member of a Royal Family.

Very dismissive "who cares" - well I do because he has served the Crown both as a serving soldier and working royal for over 50 years. That matters.

Secondly "condition" as typed by you infers that you are questioning his state of health. I'm sure that can't be the case as the Prince has had a stroke.

You should be ashamed!

Look newbies, I guess you both are a bit over-enthusiastic to show your devotion to royalty by criticising others. But if you look carefully at my previous posts, you will find something about my "thoughts" about this member of the royal family. You will also understand that my "who cares" is a sarcasm directed towards media who dont care at all for the "lesser" royals. And you no way deserve to judge my devotion to Duke of Kent or BRF
One tip for future on TRF: Just make sure you read atleast the last 10-12 posts of whichever thread you are in, before firing your posts.
This will give you an idea which way the discussion is going, and what views the individual posters present. Dont just go by catchy lines and add some more yourself. All the best. Looking for nice discussions with you..

You are not endearing yourself by writing this Vkrish. I notice that you haven't challenged me, maybe because I am not a newbie. They are entitled to their opinion, even when it doesnt conform with yours. That is the way this forum works.

I am sorry if I was too offensive. But I was really hurt that people misunderstood me. In fact I very much respect the Kents and Gloucesters and follow and post in their threads regularly.
I was so frustated none of the "real media" care to report the Duke of Kent's condition atleast a hundredth of how much they report of much less deserving "senior" royals (I know thats the way things work, but still stroke is a serious thing)
So wrote that with sarcasm (with pain,actually)..that "who cares".
But I stand by my suggestion that you should not simply fire at someone's posts without understanding their intention completely.
Ok once again I apologise to everyone. But please keep my suggestion in mind.

Oh dear, someone has got their knickers in quite a twist today!

Nope.....have read the previous 15 posts and see nothing that would have given me any more information.
Maybe it's something to do with all the quotation marks.

@RoyalReporter: The Duke of Kent, 77, is back on duty on Sunday, attending a Scots Guards remembrance service, four weeks after suffering a mild stroke.

@RoyalReporter: The Duke of Kent's office says: "The Duke is feeling well and looking forward to getting back to work."

Great news - whatever keeps these Windsors going, I wish I had it.

he looks good enough. Hope he can ride again at birthday parade..

Hurrah !

Excellent to see the duke again, and well enough to undertake an engagement.

Catholics are allowed to be Masons - many of my masonic friends are Catholics. That is the sort of furphy put out by some RCs who were blackballed in the past and put the blame on being RC rather than on other factors - and it has stuck.

My great-uncle had a full requiem mass in Sydney's St Mary's cathedral including a full masonic funeral service with no problems.

I grew up in a masonic family and being a member of an associated female order I speak from experience and personal knowledge - as a child one of the most prominent masons in my father's lodge was the local RC priest.

.

The Duke of Kent visited the headquarters of Rolls Royce Motor Cars in Goodwood, near Chichester on April 16, 2013.
