I like Lady Pamela's explanation of how Prince Philip took the name of Mountbatten after he stopped being a Prince of Greece.

What explanation All she said was 'when he was no longer Prince of Greece he was a Mountbatten'. Not why.

And her explanation for Archie was faulty as well. Its not about 'direct heirs' but about those with no title. Archie shouldn't be a Mountbattan-Windsor.

Since Archie is the son of a grandson of the monarch he carries no royal title and is therefore a Mountbatten-Windsor.

Well, if we analyze it she was just saying it in another way. Prince Philip took the last name Mountbatten when he became a naturalized British subject. This is because he was son of Princess Alice of Battenberg and grandson of the 1st Marquess of Milford Haven.

Mountbatten is a direct Anglicisation of the German Battenberg (literally Batten Mountain)

With Archie's, Mountbatten-Windsor is a cadet branch of the House of Mountbatten of cognatic descent. This name is given to Elizabeth's male-line descendants not holding Royal styles.

She doesn't really need to explain surely? Philp gave up his royal title.. so he had to adopt a surname..and he used the anglicised version of his mother's house Battenburg..

Was it absolutely necessary that Philip had to have a surname? Could he not have been Philip of Edinburgh, taken from his title?

As Philip gave up his royal title upon getting permission from George VI to marry Princess Elizabeth, before the official announcement of the engagement and during their engagement period, he was Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. He wasn't granted the title of Duke of Edinburgh until the day of their wedding.

He needed a surname when he became a natrualised British citizen in February 1947. He couldn't spend the time from then until a maybe engagement and wedding without a surname.

He wasn't created Duke of Edinburgh until his wedding day.

The royals all have surnames, even those with titles. The Cambridge children may use 'Cambridge' as their surname at school but their real surname is still 'Mountbatten-Windsor' as we saw with William and his legal case in France. He had used 'Wales' as his surname through school and the military but when required by law to use an actual surname and not a title he used 'Mountbatten-Windsor' as a real surname that isn't a title is sometimes required.

It's so nice to see a new family photo of Lord Mountbatten with his husband! They seem to be very happy together and it's lovely that his daughters have embraced James into the family (from what I can see in the photos). I loved Ivar's comment about how his daughters see James as another fun dad It looks as if they have pretty great parties from the photos!
