I think the Foreign Office has had a word...

This month Prince Charles didn't meet @DalaiLama when he was in the UK. Next month, the Chinese President will be here.

Peter Hunt ‏@BBCPeterHunt
In 1999 Prince Charles boycotted a return state banquet in London, hosted by the Chinese.

Peter Hunt ‏@BBCPeterHunt
When Prince Charles last met @DalaiLama in 2012 he called the prince the "best of friends".

If the Chinese want to be all huffy that is their prerogative, personally I'm proud that the Prince of Wales stands by his conscience and defends the oppressed Tibetans and his friend HH the Dalai Lama.

I also hope the Prince and Princess of Wales do attend the Banquet given by his mother.

When are we going to know who is attending? I would imagine we won't find out until pics of the State Banquet come out...

I've been wondering about this as well... I have no clue how it's usually done. Does anyone know if we get to know who will be at state visits before the event? I can't remember.... If it is unusual to not know it by now it might be because there is still discussions about it.

I think I might be confused... I thought about the Diplomat's dinner in 2013, when the pics showed the royals inside their cars, going to the dinner. And thats's was about that...

But I guess, a state visit is something bigger, or it works different... so...

Yeah... those are not photographed. State visits are both the Welcoming part (which was the one Kate and William was on when she was pregnant) and also a banquet on the same day. The banquet is usually a few pictures of the queen and some of the other royals and guests, but not very many. Or at least that's how I've understood it with my limited knowledge :P

It is such a pity, as state banquets are the most entertaining and glam events for royal watchers: dresses, blig bling, tiaras, orders etc

i agree, i am proud that charles actually stands by his beliefs and those of the oppressed, both in tibet and in china with a really bad human rights record, and does not just 'put on a nice face' because he has to and because china is bringing money into the UK. if the UK, being such a powerful country, doesn't do this, then who will? i applaud charles and his boldness. it's important to be diplomatic being royal, but it is also important to take on the advantage of your position to denounce what isn't right in benefit of the whole world. if not them, who?

[my bolding]
After opium wars and other dirty things committed by British in China, Prince Charles has no right to pass judgments on China.

State Banquets is one the most beautiful events that takes place on the official royal calendar. It really make no sense on whatsoever why this grand event isn't photographed and videoed well. Years ago, the senior royals posed for an official photograph with the visiting Head of State at the State Banquet. That was stopped in the early 80's, I think.

I think the Cambridge's will be attending, but the only pictures we might get is them arriving by car, and blurry images of the banqueting table.

When the Cambridges are attending the banquet and Charles and Camilla aren't, I think we will see Kate seated next to Mr. President, as she is the second highest ranking royal lady then. In that case, there is a chance that we'll have quite a good picture of her, because most of the time, only the Queen and the visiting head of state are photographed. When Kate is seated near one of these two, we'll probably see her.

Those deeply regrettable events took place 150 years ago.. the oppression of Tibetans, and human rights in China is happening NOW, so the Prince and others have every right to make their objections felt !

Chinese have long memories. Lectures about human rights and oppression coming from the discredited western regimes are odd.

I still think it's unlikely that the PoW as heir to the throne will not be at the State Banquet. China is one of the top 3 world powers and it would be completely reckless for the future king of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to snub a key economic partner and major foreign investor in the UK.

Even Obama, who is the most powerful man in the world, had to roll out the red carpet for president Xi.

Most of the times one gets to see a decent view of the 2nd royal lady (usually Camilla) at the banqueting table, while the 3rd royal lady (usually Anne) is hidden behind a gigantic flower bouquet. So chance of seeing Catherine are only good if she attends instead of Camilla. If the Cambridges attend additionally, then chances for a good view of Kate with tiara are slim.

Sometimes the speeches at the State Banquets are filmed and the camera cuts to certain members of the royal family. So hopefully that would happen.

I must say that it baffles me on why such an important event like the State Banquet for a visiting Head of State isn't photographed and videoed well. I mean, no one expects to see the royals and guest eating of course, but at least provide some pictures and coverage of the event. I always said that the palace should provide some live feed of the arrivals and procession on their official YouTube channel. I guarantee there would be tons of viewers for it.

I hope that because it would be William and Catherine's first attendance of a State Banquet, even if they attend as additional guests, some decent photos or video footage will emerge.

Yes, I've noticed this in my searching through pictures of state banquets looking for tiaras - so frustrating!
