State Visit from the King and Queen of Spain: July 12-14, 2017

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Yes a very gracious curtsey from a very regal looking Princess Royal to the King and Queen consort.

Very nice. Again, any answer on why Prince Charles doesn't seem to bow to Queen Letizia?

On this picture , I think we can clearly see the Star of the Order of Isabella the Catholic on Anne. I still don't get why she doesn't have the sash or a ribbon.

I´ve noticed that the Queen Mother in her later years also only wore her Garter for state banquets, even when related royal guests came which I´m sure she was bestowed, as Queen Mother, a very high ranking order.

Well, the british RF simply does it differently than any other monarchy:whistling:

The Queen of Spain has to borrow a tiara?!? Are these personal belongings of Qu Sophia ? Yesterdays Fleur-de-Lys tiara was in the spanish royal family before Sophia married JC, so it couldn´t be of her personal possession.

Yes, she does. The only tiaras that are technically hers to wear are the big Fleur de Lys, which is reserved for the current queen, and the small Fleur de Lys, which she got as a wedding gift. The two Cartier tiaras are owned by King Juan Carlos, who either inherited them or bought them from his relatives. the Prussian fringe was given to Queen Sofia by her mother, and the Mellerio Shell, the Floral and the Rubies were also personal gifts to Sofia, so I suppose she owns them too.

Letizia has been wearing the Floral quite regularly though since she was Princess of Asturias . Maybe the family has made some arrangement about the ownership of that tiara which we are not aware of. I don't really know .

I guess for the next monarch State Visit, Charles and Camilla and the Cambridge's will have a more active role in the visit. Who knew the more active you are in the visit, the more chance you will get an order.

Good pic here of Anne's stars, definitely two .. Spanish Royals visit UK - Day 2 | jose gegundez | photographer

Personally I don't see the problem with that way of giving orders. Why should Catherine get something for going to dinner at her mother in laws house while Anne, Harry and Andrew hosted them on different bits of their official programme? People may not like it but I don't think you can say its unfair.

As I said before, it is probably not their fault that they didn't have a more active role. It was the Queen's decision.

I know some posters disagree, but ignoring precedence and awarding orders to Anne, Harry and Andrew , and not to Camilla, Will or Kate, was a big blunder by the Spanish king IMHO. Besides, the mystery of the missing sashes or ribbons has not been solved yet.

Maybe, as Wartenberg said, Princess Anne decided to follow the Queen Mother's example and wear only the sash of the Garter with a foreign star, but that would be Windsor arrogance again. Seriously, I don't get it !

It is nice to know that Queen Sofia can leave family tiaras to Infanta Elena's and Infanta Christina's daughters.

I don't see a mystery re the Sash. A KCVO doesn't get a Sash so obviously this particular level of the Order of Isabella the Catholic doesn't get a Sash either just a breast star.

Yes, but a Commander would wear the badge of the order on a necklace like a KCVO, wouldn't he ? (you don't get a breast star alone AFAIK). Harry was wearing his KCVO insignia around his neck yesterday , rather than the appropriate insignia of Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, and there lies the mystery.

As for the sash, one of the sites quoted by another poster said that Anne was made a Grand Cross, so she should be wearing a Spanish sash.

Nice to see Princess Anne hosting the Guildhall dinner. In the past I think the Gloucesters and Andrew have had the duty.

Do I remember that Anne may have been a godmother to Felipe? Could be wrong .. although that may be the reason why she was the host. JMHO

Charles and Camilla have played the role in this State Visit that they do in most of them - the role of the heir apparent and spouse. When they were overseas it was the role played by William and Kate.

They don't do the minor royals role of escorting them to events but do the greet and meet and host them at their home.

That is the correct precedence side of things.

Getting awards isn't their reason for doing something. It is just that Felipe decided to hand them out to those who showed him around rather than the more important role of actually meeting him and escorting him to Horseguards to be formally presented to HM.

All William and Kate did was have dinner - and that won't be any different unless Charles is again overseas or incapacitated until William is the heir apparent. The rest of the State Visit is left to the minor royals - often the Gloucester's and Kent's do those duties even.

She is the Queen of Spain! I don't care how many "tiara events" she has, she can still put on a suit or appropriate dress to attend a church service.

I don't care a twit. I'm just making an observation. I dressed better when I went to Westminster Abbey while on vacay because I had respect for where I was. Surely a Queen could do the same. Defend her all you want. I don't care.:ermm: But if I were Spanish I would be embarrassed.

Well, I am a Spaniard and I am not embarrassed. QL looks lovely and it is a Carolina Herrera ensemble. She is a modern queen.

Ok so...Letizia needs to leave the red dress from last night and this gorgeous blue dress from tonight behind for Kate to wear....

I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoyed this State Visit. The live tv coverage has been amazing. We've seen more videos and pictures from this State Visit than the previous State Visits. The Windsors came out full force too. It's very satisfying that the Spanish State Visit finally got a chance to take place. Everyone did a beautiful job and looked fantastic doing it.

Yes! The long wait was worth it :D
And kudos for casa real providing us with links and hd photos, everything a royalwatcher wants.

Letizia's outfit in Westminster Abbey looks appropriate to me. Casual and smart casual is different.

Quite disappointed to see the floral tiara again but wow Letizia, that gown and that earrings!

I just want to say a huge Thank You to very one who worked so hard to provide all the videos, the pictures and the commentaries for this visit. This is my first state visit and not one of my books has this much info on anything like this.....I am so impressed with all this and is it wrong to say I want MORE of these? How often does this happen?

Most of all I am so impressed with HM and the DoE for at this age they have lots of stamina. HM took over the state dinner with such dignity and grace....she really worked her magic that night... :flowers:

It is nice to know that Queen Sofia can leave family tiaras to Infanta Elena's and Infanta Christina's daughters.

What would these girls, who don´t even have royal titles, do with tiaras?! They will hardly attend many, if any, state banquets or similar events. And if they might from time to time, they can easily loan one from the current royal couple.
I think a Queen or the two Infantas are much more in need of proper jewellery! That doesn´t mean the Marichalar and Urdangarin daughters shouldn´t have any heirlooms. But I think personal items Sophia once received from her parents or husband, like bracelets or necklesses are items they could really use.

Any chance the're Spanish?

VERY possibly.. a female Shoeaholic I know says Spanish Womens shoes are the very best on the Planet..bar NONE..

Not at all appropriate. She was Her Majesty The Queen of Spain during a State Visit, the highest protocollair level. You will not see other Queens or Crown Princesses dressed that casual during State Visits.

Mathilde on day two of a State Visit

Máxima on day two of a State Visit

Mary and Máxima on day two of a State Visit

Then seeing the Queen of Spain without hat, without gloves, in a blouse with rolled-up sleeves visiting The Prime Minister or Westminster Abbey...

Saying hello to a PM or President? This was not even a State Visit, she was not even Queen yet, but she at least dressed up to show respect to the highest Office of State: picture.

From a Queen of Spain, one of the grandest monarchies, I expected more than a blouse with rolled-up sleeves.

Well... its all over and from everything I've seen, it was a very successful state visit of Spain to the UK. Felipe and Letizia were made to feel very much at home and welcomed and if the departing video shows anything, it shows the warmness between the two heads of state and their consorts parting as good friends would.

Personally, I found Letizia's attire at Westminster Abbey to be appropriate. To be honest, the days of the required hat and gloves have gone the way of stockings with seams up the back. Its just not required or expected any more and I'm sure it met approval with those that advise Letizia on her dress for occasions.

I'd also like to extend my warmest thank you to all who have dilligently kept us all updated and informed on the activities of this state visit. It made it so much more enjoyable for us that aren't so well informed about things and made the entire visit a joy to watch.

No one, and I mean no one, does a state visit better than the British and this visit was no exception! :D

I've really enjoyed this particular State Visit.

What struck me was how personal the visit was and the involvement of so many members of the British Royal family at the various events and not just the same faces all the time.
